802 150 Years of Train Models Hal Carstens
Carstens Publications 1999 0911859055 NEW CONDITION

Patent models were among the very first locomotive and train models made over 150 years ago. As railroads expanded, a demand grew for models of these fabulous, smoke belching locomotives. Wood and paper models were followed by lithographed tin pull toys and cast iron windups and then electric models.

The scale model industry started small as men like Paul Egolf, Fred Icken, Rollin Lobaugh, Bill Walthers, Gordon Varney, Hugh Nason, and Howell Day began producing scale kits. Read about the start of NMRA, TCA, TTOS, HIAA, and MRIA.

Features over 400 photographs of pioneers, products, and layouts.

810 Sacramento Northern Harre W. Demoro
Signature Press 2009 1930013256 NEW CONDITION BOOK

The Sacramento Northern Railway was one of America's great electric interurban railways, offering almost any service and experience that the traveler might desire: high-speed trains, dining and parlor cars, and local streetcars. The SN had steep grades, a tunnel, picnic grounds in a redwood grove, long trestles, bridges, a ferryboat that carried an entire train across a freshwater bay, and a spectacular ride over the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

Passenger trains of the SN were a technological wonder of the day and operated on three voltages, using trolley poles, pantographs and third-rail shoes. Automatic cab signals guided the green interurban trains over the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

From its earliest days, the SN also was a major freight carrier, using electric-powered equipment. Late at night, when passenger trains did not operate, electric freight motors hauled the agricultural products of the Sacramento Valley and the output of Bay Area factories.

Like most intercity electric railways, the SN was built by local capitalists involved in other enterprises;
in this case, men who had sought riches in the reclamation projects and bountiful harvests of the Sacramento Valley, and the development of hydroelectric power. Unfortunately, like most electric intercity railways, the Sacramento Northern was almost always broke, but because the promoters built the line to high engineering standards for freight as well as passengers, the steam-powered Western Pacific Railroad bought the interurban and turned it into a valuable network of freight feeders.

The book deals with more than trains and tracks: it sets the story in the context of its era: a time when California was emerging from the financial impact of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The Golden State was harnessing her big rivers, embarking on major irrigation projects and entering a period of economic boom that would make her America's most populous and wealthiest state;
and the Sacramento Northern played a key role in that drama.

Included here are more than 470 rare photographs, many of them published for the first time, as well as detailed chapters on the history, finance, rolling stock, signals, power systems and terminals. Timetables, financial and traffic data, scale drawings of rolling stock, and tickets are also included and, in one chapter, the reader takes a ride on the Sacramento Northern in the mid-1930s. Maps were drawn especially by Seattle cartographer Wayne Home, with an endsheet map by John Signor. Altogether, this is a rich and rewarding account of railroad history and operation.

Harre W. Demoro was a veteran Bay Area newspaperman and author of 11 other books on urban transportation, ferryboats and railroad history. Demoro, a native of Oakland, Calif., covered urban transportation for the San Francisco Chronicle. He wrote extensively for magazines and was technical editor of Mass Transit magazine from 1976 to 1984. He passed away in 1993 and is survived by a daughter, Kristin.

811 Watching the Trains Go By … A Narrative of a Santa Fe Railway Man Harry J. Briscoe
Santa Fe Railway H&MS 1933587008 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Watching the Trains Go By...A Narrative of a Santa Fe Railway Man.

On January 4th, 1937, Harry J. Briscoe stepped off the Santa Fe train from Amarillo, onto the soil of Slaton, Texas, a division headquarters point in the southern Panhandle, to begin his first year of service in what was to become a 45 year career with the Santa Fe Railway. Beginning work as stenographer then on to a transportation clerk, Briscoe worked a number of positions, from Assistant Train Master to Superintendent, before finishing his career at Topeka, Kansas, in 1982 as General Manager of the Eastern Lines.

During his career, he served the Santa Fe at such outposts as:
Oklahoma City;
Chicago;
Amarillo, Texas;
Waynoka, Oklahoma;
La Junta, Colorado;
Wellington, Kansas;
Emporia, Kansas;
and San Bernardino, California. Along the way he encountered many interesting characters - from the track walkers on districts under his supervision, to legendary Santa Fe presidents like Fred Gurley and John Reed, movie stars like Errol Flynn, mid-western politicians and small-town newspapermen who went on to be national legends in themselves. Briscoe relates stories about them all.

Watching the Trains Go By is, then, an insiders look at the people, life and times of a great transportation system in an era when Ship and Travel by Rail meant Santa Fe All the Way.

815 Up Clear Creek on the Narrow Gauge Harry W. Brunk
Benchmark Publications 1990 0961546735 Third Printing, 2007 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Up Clear Creek on the Narrow Gauge: Modeling The Colorado & Southern

Up Clear Creek is a collection of 54 articles by the same title that originally appeared in the bi-monthly magazine, NARROW GAUGE AND SHORT-LINE GAZETTE.

It is the story of the authors HOn3 scale model railroad. He based his Union Central and Northern layout on the Clear Creek District of the 3-foot gauge Colorado & Southern Railroad that ran from Golden, Colorado, to just beyond Silver Plume, Colorado. Although this book tells the story of the authors layout, it is not a how-to-do-it book. Rather it is a book of inspiration and motivation-the author has an infectious enthusiasm for his modeling and his subject. Thus Up Clear Creek is also a history book-modeling the C&S as it was in the late 1920s and early 1930s required a great deal of research. The history of the area is discussed in the text and reflected in the accurate modeling not only of the railroad and its equipment, but also of the houses, churches, mines, and businesses along the line.

Whether you are a model railroader, a railfan, or just curious about the intimate details of the Clear Creek Canyon area of Colorado, you will find something of interest in this book. Modelers will find inspiration and techniques that are applicable whatever railroad they model, be it Eastern, Western, narrow or standard gauge, logging or mining.

819 Rails Across Martha's Vineyard Herman Page
South Platte Press 2009 0942035771 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Rails Across Martha's Vineyard: Steam Narrow Gauge and Trolley Lines

Martha's Vineyard is an island located in the Atlantic Ocean off the south coast of Massachusetts. The Vineyard became a place for summer vacationing in the late 1800s, and residents turned to rail travel as an easy means of traveling about the Island.

Beginning in 1873, the first horse-drawn streetcar line began operation on the Vineyard. This was followed the next year by the three-foot-gauge Martha's Vineyard Railroad, operating for nine miles between the communities of Oak Bluffs, Edgartown and Katama. The little-known histories of both the Island's steam narrow-gauge railroad and what grew to be a seven-mile electric streetcar system are explored in this title.

Attention is given to the operating history and equipment used by the two unique rail systems. The narrow gauge ended service in 1895, followed by the trolley lines in 1918. While any kind of rail service on Martha's Vineyard has been gone for about a century or more, this book relives the era when travel by train or trolley was part of daily life on the Island.

820 Alaska-Yukon Railroads: An Illustrated history Howard Clifford
Oso Publishing 1999 096475214X NEW CONDITION BOOK

Alaska/Yukon Railroads: An Illustrated History

Gold! The name of this precious metal has always incited a fanatical rabidity in the hearts of fortune seekers, and when the gold started flowing from the Yukon, the age of the Klondiker was born and the rush was on. Many fortunes were made and many more were not, but the demand to move people and materials remained insatiable. Wagon roads had been built to meet the transportation demand, but by 1898 several companies were vying to build the first railroads. Ultimately, three companies - one American, one in British Columbia, and the third in the Yukon - joined forces to create the road that couldn't be built: The White Pass & Yukon Route.

In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson gave the nod to what would become the 471-mile-long Alaska Railroad connecting Seward with Fairbanks. The work was slow and dangerous, and some bridges even today remain engineering marvels, but the line was ultimately completed. Both the White Pass & Yukon and the Alaska Railroad are still around today, still working for a living, as well as enjoying a brisk tourist trade. But Alaska has seen dozens of other railroads come and go over the years. While these lines were smaller and lesser known, each has its own story to tell. Nome gave birth to railroads that spanned the flat, spongy tundra. Farther south, several lines sprang up to reach the rich copper deposits in the Copper River Valley. Various stock-selling schemes accompanied the hype, and ultimately two companies watched as their crews stood toe to toe in a confrontation that left several wounded and entire communities in an outrage.

Back in the Klondike, other short lines were started up to meet the needs of the expanding industry, including tiny tramways that used animal power and wooden rails. Katalla became a bona fide boomtown as companies scrambled to build lines to tap the areas oil and mineral resources. Other regions in Alaska that held the promise of vast riches and there were many also drew the attention of hopeful railroad schemes, despite any difficulty or circumstance.

This has been the spirit and promise of Alaska and the Yukon, with their natural wealth held in check by almost unimaginable terrain and weather challenges. Alaska/Yukon Railroads, An Illustrated History, is the story of all known railroads in the area, including several that never left the drawing board. Over 200 photographs give you a real sense of the challenges, attempts, successes, and failures of the brave souls who stepped forward to conquer the last frontier. Most chapters include complete rosters, showing the wide variety of motive power used to operate the lines.

Originally published in 1981 as Rails North by Superior Publishing Company, Seattle, WA. The book has been completely overhauled and updated to the extent that Oso Publishing felt a title change was in order.

821 Appalachian Coal Hauler: Interstate Railroad's Coal Trains Hugh Wolfe and Ed Wolfe
TLC Publishing 2001 1883089670 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Appalachian Coal Hauler: The Interstate Railroad's Mine Runs and Coal Trains

Ed Wolfe, who wrote the very popular The Interstate Railroad: History of an Appalachian Coal Road, published by Old Line Graphics in 1994 and very well received, has now zeroed in on the Interstate mines and the trains that served them, how the switching was done, trains assembled, etc.

This will be a super book for those interested in this region, in coal mines and railroading, and in the way a coal railroad really operated. A must for those who have the first book from 1994. First hand research, with many rare and unusual photographs. Modelers will appreciate the data that will enable them not only to build accurate mines and tipples, but to serve them with the appropriate trains. This type of operation would be applicable to almost any railroad operating in the Appalachian region. More steam than diesel photographs.

822 Grand Trunk Western Railroad: An Illustrated History I. E. Quastler
R&I Publishing 2009 0946985820 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Grand Trunk Western Railroad: An Illustrated History

This book, with more than 400 illustrations, including 40 pages in color, is the first to cover the entire history of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad. The GTW goes back to the very start of railroad construction in the American Midwest in the 1830s, with its predecessors eventually coming under the influence of Canadian railways.

Today, GTW's main role is as a continuation of Canadian National Railway into the United States, providing vital connections with many railroads at Chicago, Toledo and other cities. GTW also has been vital in serving the needs of the American and Canadian auto industries.

Chapters include a look at every segment of the historic GTW system, its operations, motive power and station facilities.

The author, noted rail historian Ira E. Quastler, has made this title available to South Platte Press for distribution.

824 Union Pacific West From Leavenworth I. E. Quastler
South Platte Press 1999 0942035534 NEW CONDITION BOOK

A History of the Leavenworth, Kansas & Western Railway.

This book picks up where Kansas Central Narrow Gauge leaves off in telling the history of the rail line that ran from Leavenworth to Miltonvale, Kansas. A few years after converting from narrow gauge to standard gauge, the Union Pacific-controlled Kansas Central was purchased at a foreclosure auction for $200,000 and rechristened the Leavenworth, Kansas & Western, with plans to expand the line to the western border of Kansas and northward into Nebraska. But financial woes dogged the line and in 1908 it was sold to the Union Pacific. Improved highway transportation and losses spurred by the Great Depression caused the UP to abandon nearly all of the LK&W line in 1935.

833 Trains Don't Fly J.F. Frana
South Platte Press 2010 0982747101 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Trains Don't Fly.

The author, a retired train dispatcher living in Iowa, tells of his long career with the Milwaukee Road at various stations and division points both in the Midwest and far West. The identity of the railroad and many of the locations mentioned in the book are thinly disguised in order to protect both the innocent and the guilty. Frana otherwise recounts his time on the Milwaukee with both humor and pathos.

Covering from about 1953 to 1995, the stories range from working at branch line depots in the last days of steam power to working in the dispatchers' office during the tumultuous last years of Milwaukee Road operations. In between are accounts of the many personalities the author encountered, and the many incidents which made life never dull for a train dispatcher.

This title has been made available to South Platte Press by the author for distribution. It features five photographs and a glossary section.

834 Railroad Logging in the Klamath Country Jack Bowden
Oso Publishing 2003 1931064113 NEW CONDITION BOOK

It is hard to imagine an area better suited for railroad logging than the park-like pine forests of south-central Oregon, a gently rolling country where railroads could be built with a minimum of cost. Ease of construction coupled with an abundance of high quality timber set the stage for one of America's really great logging shows.

Railroad Logging in the Klamath Country is the fascinating story of the logging railroads of this area. During the first half of the 20th century more than two dozen of these colorful lines were pushed into the forests of Klamath, Deschutes, Lake and Jackson Counties. Ranging in size from Ackley Brothers short, two-mile gravity railroad at Keno, to the extensive systems of Brooks-Scanlon and Weyerhaeuser, they're all here. For over 90 years, companies like Algoma, Pelican Bay, Lamm, Ewana Box, Shaw-Bertram, Kesterson, Wheeler-Olmstead, Brooks-Scanlon, Shevlin-Hicks, Medco, the OC&E and others brought logs out of the woods on their railroads in an attempt to satisfy the nation's insatiable demand for pine lumber and wooden boxes. A must for any logging railroad fan!

In addition to over 140 photographs, the book contains a concise history of every lumber company in the region that operated a railroad, a roster of its locomotives and one or more maps of its rail lines.

835 The Modoc: Southern Pacific's Back Door to Oregon Jack Bowden and Tom Dill
Oso Publishing 2002 1931064091 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Southern Pacific's Modoc Line traversed one of the most isolated sections of northeastern California and western Nevada. Originally stretching 278 miles from Klamath Falls, Oregon to Fernley, Nevada, the line comprised all or parts of three separate railroads. Two of these, the Fernley & Lassen and the Modoc Northern, were built by the Southern Pacific; the third was a former narrow-gauge line, the Nevada-California-Oregon Railway. Although opened for traffic in 1929, this section of track was under-utilized until the construction boom following World War II. Beginning in the 1970s traffic began to erode and the levels never recovered. Today the center portion of the route is under Union Pacific ownership.

There are many pictures of Southern Pacific steam locomotives including cab-forwards and the 3800s (the AC-9s).

837 Trains to Yosemite Jack Burgess
Signature Press 2005 1930013140 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Trains to Yosemite.

Among the best-known of California's many short lines was the Yosemite Valley Railroad. Though several publications have explored aspects of this line, a comprehensive and profusely illustrated book has long been needed. Renowned author and modeler Jack Burgess has now filled this void.

In 1907, the completion of the Yosemite Valley Railroad revolutionized travel to Yosemite: the world-famous park could suddenly be reached in less than a day. Within a few short years, it was even possible for the long-distance traveler to reach the Park without leaving the comfort of a Pullman sleeper. The number of visitors to the Park continued to increase annually in these early years and the railroad advertised heavily to promote tourism even more to the unrivaled Valley. The YV ran from Merced to El Portal at the entrance to Yosemite National Park, much of the route following the Merced River. Though passenger traffic to the Park was important, lumber mills and other industries along the line were major sources of business. The passenger and freight operations are all included in this book, along with numerous photographs illustrating the on-line industries.

The fascinating story of this unique railroad is told by Yosemite Valley Railroad expert Jack Burgess and illustrated through more than 400 photographs (including 43 color photographs, some of them color slides taken by Al Rose before abandonment of the YV in 1945), 19 maps, and 26 scale drawings. Complete equipment rosters together with numerous timetables, postcards, tickets, and other memorabilia help provide additional insight into the railroad. The narrative is further highlighted with over two dozen anecdotes from railroaders who worked on the railroad over the years. The result is a highly informational and readable history of this wonderful railroad which, for 40 years, transported wide-eyed tourists to Yosemite.

They were the product of corporate politics and never should have been built at a time when the diesel had become the railroad industry's choice for motive power. In fact, the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie did not want these locomotives, and could not even operate them over a significant portion of their railroad when received. The story is supported with many previously never before published historical documents.

P&LE ’s BERKSHIRES is a hard cover edition, with over 130 pages containing 134 photographs, plus 52 documents, 13 maps and 6 drawings. It tells the story of how these locomotives came to be, their development and operations, both on the P&LE and New York Central Railroad. Anyone fascinated by these locomotives will love this book.

842 No Numbered Runways Jack Schofield
Sono Nis Press 2004 1550391461 NEW CONDITION BOOK

No Numbered Runways: Floatplane Pioneers of the West Coast (Canada).

Jack Schofield ’s No Numbered Runways recounts the exciting stories of early and latter day pilots whose floatplanes tracked the British Columbia coast. Often without benefit of charts, weather reports, radio, or navigational aids and, indeed, always without numbered runways, these ingenious aviators shaped the history of commercial flying on Canada ’s West Coast.

These adventures of west coast floatplane history are told here by Jack Schofield who, like the heroes appearing between these covers, flew seaplanes up and down the unforgiving coastline of British Columbia. Included are some 'tall tales and true,' which pilots call 'hangar flying,' that may help to explain why some coast dogs chose adventure over personal and financial security. After reading No Numbered Runways, you ’ll understand why one observer remarked that these aviators 'were not your Dow Jones average'.

848 Key System Gallery James A. Harrison
Shade Tree Books 2006 0930742303 NEW CONDITION BOOK

A photographic visit to the Trans-Bay and City Streetcar Lines of the Key System and its Affiliated Street Railways in Oakland, Berkeley and East Bay cities, 1902-1958.

Dreams don't always come true. The promoters of the rail lines which became the Key System had their sights set on San Jose and Sacramento-as a high-speed electric competitor to the Southern Pacific. However, a lack of money and the business cycle (and perhaps even the great San Francisco Earthquake) thwarted Key's plans. The Key instead re-focused itself as a suburban commuter railroad, aggressively pushing its competitive technology advantage in the East Bay, with suburban electric lines fanning out from the new pier and ferry terminal to serve communities in Oakland, Berkeley and developing satellite communities.

During its construction, the Key System overlaid an existing network of street railway lines, most of which were swept up into the holding company's corporate structure. In reality there was one holding company and one home shop, but streetcars and transbay trains historically stayed out of each others way. After 1946-1948, both streetcars and suburban trains were painted the same and lettered for Key System Transit Lines. Keys new suburban cars operated on their own (new) tracks, physically and electrically separate from the streetcar services. In this book, the author examines both the street railway and suburban lines as if they were one company.

Contents:
Ch. 1: Introduction, pp. 3-9;
Ch. 2: Interurban and Transbay Trains pp. 10-45;
Ch. 3: Streetcars pp. 46-75;

850 North Platte Canteen James J. Reisdorff
South Platte Press 1998, Sixth Printing 2007 NEW CONDITION BOOK

An Account of Heartland Hospitality Along the Union Pacific Railroad.

Just 10 days after Pearl Harbor, the residents of North Platte, Neb., learned that their own Company D, Nebraska National Guard, which had been training in Arkansas, was going to pass through the city en route to the West Coast. About 500 family members and friends hurried to the Union Pacific Railroad station with cookies, candy, cakes and cigarettes. After a long wait, a troop train rumbled into the station - with a unit from the Kansas National Guard.

The residents were disappointed until someone in the crowd said, Well, what are we waiting for Welcome to our city, sons, and here's a little something for you. They then passed out to these boys the gifts they had arranged for their own.

This was the beginning of the North Platte Canteen. Every day, from 3,000 to 5,000 soldiers, sailors and marines visited the North Platte Canteen in the Union Pacific station. During a 10-minute stop, they were supplied with coffee, sandwiches and cigarettes, given a handful of current magazines and sent on their way, warmed not only by the hot coffee but by the smiles and friendly greetings of the busy canteen workers. North Platte Canteen highlights what still persists as one of the most endearing examples of gratitude expressed toward those who have served in Americas defense.

This new edition features a new cover and a new foreword detailing recent events regarding the Canteen.

There are few train pictures in this book, it is mostly about the people of the time and shows the locals and the troops getting together for a short time during World War Two.

851 Train Time in Nebraska: The Post Card Era James J. Reisdorff and Michael M. Bartels
South Platte Press 2006 NA NEW CONDITION BOOK

Jotting a message on a penny post card at the turn of the 20th century was an American tradition. A plain card was inadequate for many travelers, who wished to share something of their journey or description with the recipient. In addition to carrying messages, picture post cards or view cards became an art form themselves, sought by collectors then and now. And railroads, as the dominant form of transportation during the card craze, were a prime subject.

Railroad depots became one of the most popular images, as they were one of the first things an arriving traveler saw of a town, and were otherwise a busy portal for any community which depended on the daily experience of train time, to provide it with essential transportation services. While most of the old depots are gone, as are many of the railroad lines themselves, their images are eagerly sought by post card collectors. Here is a look at the golden era of the railroad station and train travel in one Midwest state, Nebraska, as depicted on post cards from the 1900-1915 era.

Introduction;
Life at the Depot, pp. 13-32;

South Platte Press 2006 0942035739 NEW CONDITION BOOK

The Big Legacy of the Union Pacific Big Boy: Why Railfans Still Love the World's Largest Steam Locomotive.

The Union Pacific Railroad's Big Boys are often credited as having been the largest steam locomotives in the world. Although these 25 steam giants last operated in 1959, their contribution to transportation history has not been forgotten. There are now eight Big Boys preserved at various museums and parks across the United States. This book, with text and more than 70 illustrations, describes the post-Steam Era story of Big Boy. It looks at not only what has become of the eight surviving locomotives, but also how human interest in these huge machines manifests itself in both the railroad hobby and popular culture. It also examines the question that has often been asked by railroad buffs everywhere: Will a Big Boy ever return to the rails

853 The Man Who Wrecked 146 Locomotives James J. Riesdorff
South Platte Press 2009 0942035852 NEW CONDITION BOOK

The Man Who Wrecked 146 Locomotives: The Story of Head-On Joe Connolly.

Between 1896 and 1932, Iowa native Joseph S. Connolly staged 73 head-on train wrecks before large thrill-seeking audiences at state fairs and other public events nationwide. Connolly, known as Head-On Joe, boasted that he deliberately destroyed 146 old steam locomotives during these collisions and never had anyone injured in the process.

This book looks at both the career of this professional engine wrecker and the techniques used in staging a train wreck for public entertainment. Dramatic head-on locomotive collisions staged by other promoters are also detailed using 40 rare illustrations and informative text. It's a look at a largely forgotten but still fascinating part of railroad history.
