225 East Broad Top DVD
Pentrex 1997 1563422158 NEW CONDITION DVD

The Oldest Narrow Gauge Line Still Operating in the US!

In 1997, when this show was originally filmed, the East Broad Top Railroad was the oldest narrow gauge line still in operation in the US and the last original narrow gauge railroad in existence east of the Mississippi River. Most of the original track remained intact. Historic artifacts lined the route as if caught in a time warp. Our tour of the railroad found abandoned freight cars, deserted yards, stations, tunnels, water tanks, and bridges along the old right-of-way.

Journey with us to the mountains of southern Pennsylvania to learn about the East Broad Top ’s rich heritage. Then take to the rails to see the line as an excursion operation. Experience the thrill of riding in the cab of a Mikado-type locomotive and witness the spectacular beauty of steam engines running on clear, cold, October days. A special railfan weekend has the East Broad Top running all available equipment, including doubleheader steam trains, freights, and the EBT ’s M-1 motorcar. See for yourself why the East Broad Top is one of railroading ’s national treasures!

DVD Special Features: Chapter Menus provides instant access to program segments. Full-screen (4x3) Format; No region code; can be played in any NTSC DVD player worldwide; Packaged in Sturdy Vinyl Clamshell Case.

226 Empire Builders to Milwaukee DVD
Pentrex 2006 1563422018 NEW CONDITION DVD

Privately run intercity passenger service in Milwaukee was a thing of the past by early 1971. The Federal government had formed Amtrak to remove the burden of passenger service from the railroads and insure that core passenger routes remained active. By May 1st, when Amtrak rolled into Milwaukee, things had changed. Milwaukee Road ’s Hiawatha and C&NW ’s bi-level Streamliners were out, but Amtrak ’s Empire Builder was in. Direct rail service was now available all the way to Seattle, but one could no longer travel to Green Bay! All passenger service on C&NW rails was gone, but Amtrak did pick up some Chicago-Milwaukee trains over Milwaukee Road rails.

These new trains looked different, too. Amtrak paint was months away and its first units were made up of mismatched heritage cars and engines that earned them the nickname Rainbow trains (BN green, GN orange and blue, Milwaukee yellow, Burlington silver, NP greens, and others). Their classic motive power included E-9s, F-3s, F-7s, and F-9s.

Empire Builders to Milwaukee takes you back to the six months preceding and following the start of Amtrak service in Milwaukee. You ’ll view the Morning Hiawatha and the C&NW bi-level Streamliners during their last winter and spring of operations as well as Amtrak ’s new Empire Builder and Chicago-Milwaukee corridor service. Also making appearances are freights (many pulled by venerable GP35s and GP9s) on the Milwaukee Road and Soo Line, the commuter Cannonball, and specials including Amtrak ’s Turbo Train on its national tour and the Great Circus Train of 1971. These exciting scenes were filmed at Oconomowoc, Pewaukee, Duplainville, Brookfield, Elm Grove, Wauwatosa, Oak Creek, West Bend, and other Milwaukee metro areas. There ’s plenty to enjoy in this fascinating tribute to Amtrak ’s early Empire Builders!

DVD Special Features: Chapter Menu provides instant access to program segments. Audio Feature provides the option of watching the program with or without narration. Full-screen (4x3) Format. No region code; can be played in any NTSC DVD player worldwide. Packaged in Sturdy Vinyl Clamshell Case.

228 Extreme Steam DVD
Pentrex 2003 1563421275 NEW CONDITION DVD

Steam still thunders down the tracks on railroads across North America. A new generation of railfan photographers, equipped with digital video cameras, is riding and chasing the trains, capturing them in all their splendor with fantastic images.

Pentrex has edited the best of the best to bring you a very special video experience. Three hours of nonstop steam action delivers ten different steam engines, including the sought-after final run of Frisco 1522, side-by-side running of Ohio Central's 6325 and 1293, and SP&S 700 in Montana! You can enjoy the exciting sights and sounds of: Canadian Pacific 2816 (23 Minutes) CP 2816, a 4-6-4, was built by Montreal Locomotive Works in 1930, retired in 1960, and sold to Steamtown in 1964. Canadian Pacific reacquired the locomotive in 1998 and restored it to service in 2001. We cover two of its trips through the spectacular Canadian Rockies. First, in May of 2002, we follow the Hudson pulling a short passenger train from Yale, British Columbia to Banff, Alberta. Some of the highlights are the Thompson River Canyon, Notch Hill, Glacier, Field, and Kicking Horse Pass. On parts of the journey the 2816 works unassisted, while on the steepest portion GP38-2 diesel 3084, painted in classic CP maroon and gray livery, is added on the point. Then in June of the same year we enjoy a mixed freight and passenger train on the Crowsnest Pass route with 2816 on the point followed by two tenders and the 3084.

Milwaukee Road 261 (8 Minutes) Join us as we chase the mighty Milwaukee Road 261 from Minneapolis to Duluth and return during May of 2002. Pulling a 16-car passenger special unassisted, the shiny black 4-8-4 looks great and sounds great roaring through the north woods of Minnesota.

Mt. Rainier Scenic 2-6-2T #7, Heisler #2, and 2-8-2T #17 (8 Minutes) Three engines are steamed up for a railfan event in June of 2001. We visit the south end of this ex-Milwaukee Road branch between Elbe and Mineral, Washington. Both freight and passenger trains are featured traversing this ultra-scenic territory.

Ohio Central 6325 and 1293 (48 Minutes) We visit the Ohio Central twice in 2002. On our first visit in June, former Grand Trunk Western 4-8-4 6325 pulls a passenger special from Dennison, Ohio to Morgan Run, then a pair of F-units hauls the train north to Sugar Creek. Later in the day ex-Canadian Pacific 4-6-2 1293 teams up with the 6325 on a doubleheader back to Morgan Run. The day ends with a diesel-powered run to Dennison. We spend two days in October at the Ohio Central's Fall Photo Festival. FP-9s 6307 and 6313 make their debut in colors reminiscent of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The first day is filled with photography of a diesel passenger train and a steam freight train pulled by the 6325. On the second day we move to the double track mainline west of Coshocton for spectacular side-by-side runbys with the 6325 and 1293 pulling freight and passenger consists. The day ends with the 6325 hauling a 54-car coal train. This was the last major steam event on the Ohio Central before the railroad announced that it would discontinue all steam operations in May of 2003. It could be your last chance to witness these magnificent locomotives in operation!

SP 4449 on Stampede Pass (16 Minutes) Still wearing its black paint scheme from the previous year's BNSF special, the 4449 handles a 2-day passenger excursion in May of 2001. The train heads east from Portland along the north shore of the Columbia River to Kennewick, Washington, then northwest to an overnight stop in Yakima. The second day features the climb over Stampede Pass and a fast run down the double-track mainline from Auburn to Portland.

Spokane, Portland & Seattle 700 in Montana (18 Minutes). A fall foliage excursion in October of 2002 provides the opportunity for SP&S 700 to stretch its legs on the route of Montana Rail Link. The fall colors are at their peak, adding to the scenic beauty of the Big Sky state. On the 3-day eastward journey we follow the train along the banks of the Clark Fork River and on the climbs over Mullan and Bozeman Passes. Later we view the train leaving Billings on its 3-day return trip, running alongside the Yellowstone River, and climbing Mullan Pass once again. It's mainline steam as you love to see it and hear it!

Frisco 1522 (60 Minutes). Relive the last runs of this popular 4-8-2. In 2001 we follow the 1522 as it powers a BNSF Employee Appreciation Special through Missouri and Oklahoma. Then in September of 2002 the steamer bids farewell as it makes its final runs from St. Louis to Newburg, Missouri and return. We're trackside to document the grand finale of an outstanding excursion locomotive's career.

DVD Special Features: Two stereo soundtracks, one with the natural train sounds, the other with narration added. The viewer can switch the narration on or off at any time. Chapter Menus provide instant access to program segments. Full-screen (4x3) Format. No region code; can be played in any NTSC DVD player worldwide. Packaged in Sturdy Vinyl Clamshell Case.

231 Great American Circus & Show Trains DVD
Pentrex 1999 1563421925 NEW CONDITION DVD

Years ago excited crowds would be thrilled by the appearance of a circus or a carnival train. They knew a spectacle of grand proportions was coming to town. That thrill has not completely disappeared. Here ’s your chance to view the last two modern circus trains and the only carnival that still travels by rail!

Every year the Circus World Museum at Baraboo, Wisconsin reenacts an old-fashioned circus train. Antique circus wagons from the museum ’s extensive collection are loaded aboard railroad cars by traditional methods. Then vintage passenger diesels power the special train across the state to Milwaukee where these highly prized wagons, pulled by teams of powerful draft horses called baggage stock, will star in the annual Great Circus Parade.

The James E. Strates Carnival travels the eastern US aboard a 61-car train. Many of the carnival's employees live aboard the train, just as in times past. Jimmy Strates, the founder's grandson, relates what it was like growing up on the train and explains how traveling by rail works better for the company than other transportation methods.

These trains and others are shown while underway and as equipment and personnel work to load and unload them. You'll see the unique methods used to handle heavy equipment and gain additional background on the great American circus trains of the past and present. It's a railroading experience like no other and one the whole family will enjoy!

235 Hot Rails Through the Twin Cities DVD
Pentrex 1998 1563422352 NEW CONDITION DVD

Sizzling action –that ’s railroading in the Twin Cities in 1998 when this show was filmed. Minneapolis/St. Paul hosts eight different railroads plus Amtrak passenger trains. Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Union Pacific, Canadian Pacific, Twin Cities & Western, Minnesota Commercial, Wisconsin Central, and the I&M Rail Link all operate here. These rails are kept highly polished by cross-town transfers, local freights, yard jobs, and road trains!

Experience the action at the hottest locations. University Avenue, Division Street, and Dayton ’s Bluff at Hoffman Avenue are extensively covered. Shortline Hill, where trains strain to lift heavy tonnage out of the river valley, the NBSF mainline through St. Paul, and Wisconsin Central out of Shoreham provide plenty of action, with train meets and multiple trains underway.

Steam is on the rails in the Twin Cities. You ’ll spot Milwaukee Road #261 pulling an outbound excursion. Then it ’s on the Minnesota Commercial where many of their unusual locomotives are hard at work. MC owns a unique fleet of old Alco and EMD museum pieces that will take you back to an earlier period. Tremendous variety and sheer volume make the Twin Cities a Railfan's dream come true and it ’s captured here for your enjoyment!

DVD Special Feature: Chapter Menus provides instant access to program segments. Full-screen (4x3) Format. No region code; can be played in any NTSC DVD player worldwide. Packaged in Sturdy Vinyl Clamshell Case.

236 Illinois Terminal: A Traction Time Machine DVD
Interurban Press 1992 1563422719 NEW CONDITION DVD

Illinois Terminal: A Traction Time Machine

Step back to the 1930s-1950s to experience one of the largest interurban railroads in the country. Originally known as the Illinois Traction System, the Illinois Terminal Railroad was a significant provider of passenger and freight service for central Illinois, with Springfiled as its hub. Now, through this fascinating collection of color and black and white films and photographs you can revisit the Illinois Terminal during the height of its career.

The full range of Illinois Terminal passenger equipment is displayed here, from the trademark IT “traction orange ” arch window cars as well as the blue arch window cars to blue-and-silver streamliners, PCC cars, and even the Alto-to-Grafton Railbus. A wide array of freight power is also highlighted, such as center cabs and streamlined class B freight motors. Scenes of passenger and freight action are captured from St. Louis, to Springfield, Bloomington, Peoria, and many other locations along the Illinois Terminal route. You'll enjoy great shots of street running with cars negotiating sharp curves, fast running on elevated tracks, trackside views taken in towns, cities and along the open countryside, action on the Lake Decatur and McKinley Bridges, and lots of fantastic cab rides. There are many insider scenes as well, such as crews changing trains, rides inside the cars, cabooses on the ends of freight trains, a conductor at work, the Railbus being turned on a turntable, a new streamlined freight motor being rolled out, freights exchanging with steam railroads, the Springfield yard, railfan excursions, the last run of an older traction car, and many other special images that round out this amazing story of an iconic interurban electric railroad!

Presented in Standard Definition 4x3 Format. No region code; can be played in NTSC DVD players worldwide. Packaged in Sturdy Vinyl Clamshell Case.

237 Imperial Valley Sugar Beet Trains DVD
Pentrex 2007 1563422166 NEW CONDITION DVD

The Ending of An Era.

In the early hours of July 17, 1993, Southern Pacific ’s last sugar beet train from the Imperial Valley pulled into the station at Guadalupe, California. The nearby sugar mill would soon be shut down after nearly 100 years of operation and SP ’s sugar beet trains, with their familiar wooden gondolas, would no longer make the run from the southeast corner of the state to the central coast. Video Rails was on hand to record this historic moment, for they were capturing the entire operation prior to the end of an era.

Our journey begins in the lush farmlands of the Imperial Valley, 420 rail miles away from the Holly Sugar Mill at Betteravia. There you ’ll watch as sugar beets are harvested, transported to receiving stations, and then loaded into the wooden gondolas, with their friction bearing axles, that made SP ’s unit beet trains so unique. The loaded trains of up to 100 steel and wooden cars hauling 10,000 tons of sugar beets depart El Centro, heading toward Taylor Junction in L.A. and along the Coast Line to their destination in the Santa Maria Valley. Helper units are often added for the push over Beaumont Hill, as you ’ll see on several of the trains. At Taylor Junction, we ’re invited into the cab of SD40 7349 on the point of a 3-unit lashups that includes two SD45s. The cab ride to Guadalupe features tunnels, cuts, and blue Pacific Ocean views as well as meets and passes with intermodal hotshots and Amtrak trains. At the interchange yard in Guadalupe, the Santa Maria Valley Railroad ’s new GP-9 arrives to transfer the gondolas to the Holly Sugar Mill. Then we ’re treated to a complete tour of the refining process, from unloading to washing, pulping, purifying, drying, and bagging the granulated sugar.

Though the mill has since been partially demolished and SP ’s sugar beet trains are a thing of the past, you can still enjoy one of the most interesting railroading stories ever shown, now on DVD from Pentrex!

238 Into the Allegheny Range Vol. 1 DVD
Pentrex 1994 1563421941 NEW CONDITION DVD

Hancock, West Virginia to Cumberland, Maryland.

In the early 1990s, Iron Horse America set out to document CSX railroading on the former Baltimore & Ohio mainlines crossing the Allegheny Mountains of the eastern United States. The result was a 4-volume video collection filled with over eleven hours of dramatic coverage.

Volume 1, which was filmed in cooperation with CSX and released on VHS in 1994, takes you on an extensive tour of the CSX mainline that follows the Potomac River between Hancock, West Virginia and Cumberland, Maryland. This busy ex-B&O double-track mainline twists its way through the spectacular valleys and hills of the Alleghenies.

The highlight of our tour is the astonishing Magnolia Cutoff – an incredible piece of railroad engineering. Four double-track tunnels, two huge bridges, several massive cuts and fills, and a pair of gigantic retaining walls enabled the B&O to gain passage through the Green Ridge of the Alleghenies between Orleans Crossing and Okonoko, West Virginia. This fantastic region, with its beautiful scenery and heavy train traffic, has long been a favorite railfan site.

The entire 55-mile route is covered in fascinating detail through all four seasons. You ’ll enjoy the sights and sounds of hundreds of trains working through sun, sleet, and snow in this exciting presentation, now available on DVD!

242 Union Pacific 6900s-The Centennials DVD
Pentrex 1985 1563422867 NEW CONDITION DVD

Union Pacific 6900s-The Centennials DVD.

Experience the largest, most powerful diesel locomotives ever built. The Union Pacific DDA40X Centennials weighed in at 270 tons, were close to 100 feet long (98 feet 5 inches), carried an 8,000-gallon fuel tank, had 16-cylinder dual power plants that could generate 6,600 horsepower, and attained speeds of up to 90 mph. 47 of these behemoths were built for the Union Pacific by the Electro-Motive Division of GMC between 1969 and 1971. Within 5 years of service, most of these units had racked up over 1,000,000 miles of duty, predominantly on UP ’s high-speed western states mainline freights. Powerful as they were, the “Big Jacks ” were also high maintenance locomotives and by the early 1980s were being phased out of duty.

In this award-winning video, originally released by Video Rails, you ’ll witness the Centennials traveling through all types of terrain across 5 different states. Thrilling scenes feature them in operation on Sherman Hill, in the Feather River Canyon, and even over Cajon Pass. Fantastic pacing sequences add to the excitement. Plus, a special treat is a cab ride in a Centennial racing along at 90 mph! There was nothing quite like the sights and sounds of UP Centennials on the rails. Here is your chance to see them at their very finest!

Presented in Standard Definition 4x3 Format; No region code; can be played in NTSC DVD players worldwide. Packaged in Sturdy Vinyl Clamshell Case.

266 Across Marias Pass DVD
Pentrex 1991 1563422395 NEW CONDITION DVD

Stretched against the sunning backdrop of Glacier National Park, Burlington Northern ’s transcontinental mainline climbs up and over the rugged Rocky Mountains. One scenic splendor after another unfolds as long freight trains struggle up the mountain pass. It ’s the pre-merger days of the early 1990s and Pentrex is trackside to record the battle of trains and nature. The grandeur of the mountains is almost overwhelming as we explore the line from Whitefish, Montana to points east of Browning.

You ’ll see trains snake their way through the tunnels and along the banks of the wild middle fork of the Flathead River. Train after train rumbles through forests of aspen and larch decked out in glorious fall colors or struggles against winter ’s storms. After crossing over the high bridges and through the famous snow sheds, the trains work hard up the pass to crest the summit.

Marias Pass takes on a different look on the east slope. Wild, desolate country with ever-present mountains marks the high plateau. You ’ll see trains cross over Two Medicine Bridge and struggle upgrade through Grizzley. The solitude of Spotted Robe is broken as you watch a heavy grain train grind its way up the grade.

Burlington Northern and Mother Natures combine to make this stretch of railroad a place to be visited time and time again. No matter how often you ’ve been here before, you won ’t want to miss this vision of magnificent Marias Pass.

270 Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range DVD
Pentrex 2004 1563421356 NEW CONDITION DVD

In the northern woods of Minnesota lies the Mesabi Iron Range, an area rich in taconite iron ore. When this production was filmed in 2001, the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway was busy hauling this ore from processing plants to the rail docks on Lake Superior. We'll explore the operations of the DM&IR beginning at the dock in Two Harbors, along its two divisions and several branch lines, to the huge docks in Duluth, and see its beautiful maroon and gold locomotives at work.

Traveling along the Iron Range Division from Two Harbors to Iron Junction, we spot DM&IR's SD40-3s, former SD45T-2s remanufactured for the railroad. At Highland, a southbound train enters the scale track to weigh each car. The DM&IR runs three general freight trains and we watch one, the Miscellaneous Road Freight, head onto the branch line at Wales to pick up freight cars from the Northshore Mining Company. A rail train, led by an SD38AC, departs the yard in Biwabik. At Iron Junction a northbound train is headed by a rebuilt SD18 and a rebuilt SD9, now both classified as SD-Ms. On the Missabe Division, run-through power includes CSX SD80MACs and BNSF Dash 9s. An SD38DC leads a southbound load with steam rising in the cold winter air from freshly processed taconite pellets. We're treated to the nonstop operations at Dock 6 in Duluth, the largest ore dock on the Great Lakes.

The DM&IR, seen here through all four seasons, delivers a unique combination of hardworking railroading, intriguing motive power, modern industrial facilities, and scenic wilderness. It's a great viewing experience! DVD Special Features: Two stereo soundtracks, one with the natural train sounds, the other with narration added. The viewer can switch the narration on or off at any time. Chapter Menu provides instant access to program segments. Full-screen (4x3) Format. No region code, can be played in any NTSC DVD player worldwide. Packaged in Sturdy Vinyl Clamshell Case.

279 Amtrak Across America Combo (DVD)
Pentrex 1993, 1996 1563422859 NEW CONDITION DVD

Amtrak Across America Combo (DVD).

Featuring 2 Shows on 1 Disc! Amtrak Across America: 25th Anniversary and Amtrak's X2000 Demonstration.

From the early years when a rainbow mix of motive power and passenger cars pioneered its debut service, Amtrak has been a subject of avid interest to railfans. Pentrex celebrates the first twenty-five years of Amtrak history with two special documentaries. Included on this Combo DVD are:

Amtrak Across America; 25th Anniversary.
Climb aboard for a tribute to the first quarter century of America ’s national passenger train service. Amtrak ’s colorful history rolls across the screen, from the earliest years to the Genesis locomotives and high-speed corridors of the 1990s. Historic footage of passenger trains prior to Amtrak sets the stage. Then you ’ll see great views of Amtrak as it evolved. Highlights include the Southwest Chief, Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, Desert Wind, Sunset Limited, and other well known trains as they travel on the Northeast Corridor, the Hudson Division, Horse Shoe Curve, Chicago Hub, and other famous routes. Travel to scenic locations across the country to see Amtrak at its finest!

Amtrak ’s X2000 Demonstration.
Amtrak ’s search for new equipment to serve the Northeast Corridor allowed ABB-Traction to demonstrate its futuristic X2000 trainset. After initial testing, the X2000 began scheduled revenue service in February 1993, running from Washington, D.C. to New York City and occasionally on to New Haven and back. The sleek, high-speed train amazed everyone with its looks, speed, and ride. Pentrex takes you aboard the train to see how its radial self-steering trucks, car body tilt functions, and regenerative braking systems operate. A cab ride gives you an idea what it ’s like to zip down the corridor at 135 mph. Then we go trackside and airborne for shots of the train racing through the countryside. Join Pentrex for a ride on Amtrak ’s X2000 Demonstration!

281 Northern Mexico Rails
Pentrex 1991 1563422743 NEW CONDITION DVD

Northern Mexico Rails

In 1991, Pentrex set out to explore the fascinating operations of the Mexican railway system, seeking to discover what type of equipment our southern neighbors used and how they ran their railroads. There was so much of interest to record that we were able to present multiple video releases. Now Pentrex is proud to present Volume 1, featuring the railroads of northern Mexico.

Every freight train runs with a caboose in the world of Mexico rails in the early 1990s. It ’s a place where the art of telegraphy is still practiced as an essential means of communication. It ’s a land where railway express is a thriving business. What seems odd to us is standard here. You ’ll see former Katy GP40s pulling passenger trains in direct contrast with new General Electric Super Sevens working on high priority trains.

Climb aboard the engine of a local passenger train and experience breathtaking views as the train grinds up seventeen miles of 3 percent grade. This ride is simply exhilarating! Your train adventures will take you into some of the most remote and beautiful locations in the country. It ’s an amazing trip that highlights the differences and the similarities of railroading on Mexico ’s northern rails!

286 Arkansas & Missouri: Alcos in the Ozarks
Pentrex 1988 1563422727 NEW CONDITION DVD

Arkansas & Missouri: Alcos in the Ozarks

The last diesel locomotive rolled off the ALCO assembly line in 1969 but the hills of northwest Arkansas still echoed those distinctive ALCO sounds in 1988, when Pentrex set out to bring you an up close and personal look at the people, places, and equipment of the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad.

Running along a 139-mile corridor from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Monett, Missouri, the A&M is a longtime favorite of railfans as its fleet is comprised entirely of ALCO locomotives. Here ’s your opportunity to see Century 420s climbing the steep slopes of the Boston Mountains, the highest mountain grade between the Appalachians and the Rockies. You ’ll thrill to those unmistakable throaty sounds of an Alco throttle yanked into “Run Eight. ” You ’ll also ride in the cab of a smoking T-6 as it switches cars on a branch line and visit the shops in Springdale where the locomotives are serviced and kept running strong. A highlight of your adventures is a ride aboard RS-1 #22 as it pulls a passenger train just for us. This entertaining tour of the Arkansas & Missouri is a “must-have ” addition to your railroad DVD collection!

288 Colorado Narrow Gauge in the 1950s
Pentrex 2010 1563422883 NEW CONDITION DVD

Colorado Narrow Gauge in the 1950s: Railroading on the Marshall and Monarch Passes.

In the summer of 1953, time was running out for railroading on most of Rio Grande ’s intense narrow gauge network in southwestern Colorado. Though dieselization was nearly complete for most Class 1 railroads across America, here in Narrow Gauge country, steam remained king until the fire was dropped on the last engine after operations came to a standing halt.

Pentrex takes you back to this place and time through a priceless collection of carefully restored vintage films. Our journey begins with a look at dual gauge activity in the Salida Yard, located alongside the meandering Arkansas River. A standard gauge class C41 2-8-0 is seen along with several L131 2-8-8-2 articulateds at the coaling tower. Narrow gauge K27 #453 is also earning its keep. In addition, there are views of Salida ’s classic 20-stall roundhouse and car shop.

We take a brief but scenic drive over Marshall Pass Road as we explore the more than 10,000-foot high Pass. Next we work our way to Gunnison where we encounter C16 #268, which is emerging from the roundhouse and gets turned manually on the turntable. The 2-8-0 is being prepared to take a freight to Sapinero. We chase the train through rocky canyons and open prairies and catch switching operations in Sapinero. Then watch as raw steam power tackles 4.5 percent grades and unique double switcbacks on the Monarch Branch. Today, with the exception of two tourist lines, the narrow gauge empire is little more than a memory. However, you can still relive that fascinating era once again with Pentrex ’s Colorado Narrow Gauge in the 1950s!

Presented in Standard Definition 4x3 Format; No region code; can be played in NTSC DVD players worldwide; Packaged in Sturdy Vinyl Clamshell Case.

294 Alaska Railroad Vol. 1 DVD
Mind's I Productions 1993 156342214X NEW CONDITION DVD

Steel Rails, Midnight Sun plus Summer on the Alaska Railroad.

Stretching from Seward to Fairbanks, rising from tidewater up 2,360 feet to the Continental Divide, and running nonstop during sunless days and perpetual twilight, the Alaska Railroad is a hard-working operation that serves a land of extreme weather and incredible beauty. In the mid-1990s, filmmaker Patrick Hunstiger captured the fascination of the Alaska Railroad in a 3-part series of VHS videos and now Pentrex is proud to bring these programs to you on DVD, beginning with Volume 1: Steel Rails, Midnight Sun - Summer on the Alaska Railroad.

In 1993, the Alaska Railroad could field up to 17 trains covering up to 3,300 train miles in any given 24-hour period. These included two passenger extras; overnight freights and freight expresses; oil tanker, unit coal, and rock trains; work extras; and others. The ARR ’s all-GM locomotive fleet, which sported three different color schemes, was made up of GP40-2s, GP49s, GP38-2s, GP35s, GP7s, and MP15s. Cabooses could still be seen at the ends of some trains.

You ’ll get plenty of opportunity to enjoy these trains at work! After a brief look at a derailment earlier that spring, you ’ll follow the operations of the line starting at 7 AM on a busy June day and carry on into the evening, ending with a meet illuminated by the midnight sun at 1 AM. The trains are dispatched from Anchorage under Track Warrant Control and you ’ll view the dispatcher ’s display boards to see siding and train status in between catching the action at Eklunta, Matanuska, Talkeetna, Broad Pass, Healy, Clear Site, Nenana, and other locations. Highlights include a unit coal train pulled by 6 matched GP49s, a passenger extra at Denali Park, action on the tall trestle spanning Hurricane Gulch, and of course the incredible skylines of craggy, snow-capped mountains reaching up from floors of emerald green forests!

DVD Special Features: Chapter Menus provides instant access to program segments. Full-screen (4x3) Format. No region code; can be played in any NTSC DVD player worldwide. Packaged in Sturdy Vinyl Clamshell Case.

A Mind's I production. Produced in cooperation with the Alaska Railroad.
