2 Big Boys, Cab Forwards, Challengers and Daylights
1563423006 / 9781563423000

Big Boys, Cab Forwards, Challengers and Daylights: The films of Hank Griffiths.

Henry Hank Griffiths Jr. was one of the most prominent railroad cinematographers of the steam era. Traveling throughout Idaho, Montana, Washington, Utah, and other northwest states, he captured images of steam at work in locations other photographers seldom visited. In 1992, Video Rails compiled a fascinating collection of Hank Griffiths' films, which they released on VHS as Classic Collectors Series Volumes 7 and 8. These two fascinating shows are now available from Pentrex on one DVD.

Hank Griffiths covered a wide swath to capture steam locomotives and the occasional early diesel seen here at work on the Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, Northern Pacific, Milwaukee Road, Denver & Rio Grande Western, Colorado & Southern, and the Sierra Railroad. You'll also see the Oregon & Northwestern Lumber Company and other northwest logging railroads. The famous locomotives featured in this show include Union Pacific Big Boys and Challengers; Southern Pacific Cab Forwards and Daylights, Milwaukee Road electrics; and Northern Pacific Challengers. There's more! Highlights showcase the Rio Grande Zephyr, the UP 8444, a UP rotary snow plow, the last run of the Portland Rose over the Blue Mountains, and scenes shot at Promontory, Utah in 1969. This DVD is packed with an amazing display of American railroading history as seen through the lens of an expert craftsman. Every minute is a treat!

No region code; can be played in NTSC DVD players worldwide. Presented in Standard Definition 4x3 Format. Packaged in a sturdy vinyl clamshell case.

7 Lima Super Power Steam Locomotives Thomas W. Dixon, Jr. and Kevin Kohls
TLC Publishing 2010 0939487969 / 9780939487967 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Lima Super Power Steam Locomotives.

The purpose of this book is to give an overview of the modern steam locomotives built by the Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio. Super Power or Superpower is an appelation generally given to steam locomotives built after 1925 that have a firebox significantly larger than generally used prior to that time, usually located entirely behind the driving wheels and supported by a four-wheel (and in one case, a six-wheel) trailing truck. This allowed for the creation of furnaces and boilers that could supply a large volume of steam that could not be exhausted by use in the cylinders during sustained operation at high speed. The phrase Super Power was coined by Lima as part of its advertising campaign for this advanced design.

The book begins with the origin of the design and moves on to a railroad-by-railroad summary, roster and photographs of each Super Power class.

9 Model Railroading from Prototype to Layout Tony Koester
2010 0890247978 / 9780890247976 NEW CONDITION BOOK

While model railroaders seek realism in their layouts, the process can often be time-consuming. Model Railroading from Prototype to Layout shows how to capture the flavor of a real railroad without getting sidetracked by detail. Using Tony Koester ’s expert advice before and during construction of a layout, modelers can sharpen their focus, saving time, money, and even space. Topics include choosing a prototype, setting the time period, planning structures and scenes, selecting locomotives and rolling stock, designing the layout, and planning rail operations.

• A great reference book to guide and inspire modelers of all levels
• Shows how to take signature elements of a railroad and adapt them to one ’s own layout
• Written conversationally by one of the most respected names in model railroading

10 Montana Rail Link Mike Danneman and Dave Gayer
White River Productions 2010 1932804080 / 9781932804089 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Montana Rail Link. A detailed and well-illustrated examination of the first two decades of operation on Montana Rail Link.

Montana Rail Link was formed in 1987 from over 900 miles of railroad unwanted by merged conglomerate Burlington Northern. The venture began with a newly-assembled group of personnel, a hand-me-down collection of equipment, and customers uncertain of its service commitment. But through nearly a quarter century of business savvy and dogged perseverance, MRL has become the poster child for successful regional railroading.

This 176-page all-color volume documents those first two decades of operation on Montana Rail Link. From the outset, one of the railroad ’s prime assets was its determination to service its clients. Never mind that the railroad was set in Montana and northern Idaho, its route wound through some of the most stunning landscape offered up by the former Northern Pacific. The landscape also presented the railroad with significant operational difficulties, manifest largely on its signature mountain passes: Mullan and Bozeman. To cope with the tough grades, manned helpers have been a way of life on MRL since its inception, its employees exhibiting a spirited professionalism that has kept the rail traffic fluid and efficient.

Over the years, Montana Rail Link has successfully mixed the acquired old with the new. Road power once ruled by SD45s, F45s, SD35s, and even an SDP40, has been supplemented and even replaced by SD70ACes. The upper-quadrant semaphores which at start-up signaled portions of the main line from Lombard to Sandpoint have been retired; CTC has replaced track warrants on the main line. MRL has run it share of passenger trains: the Montana Daylight, on-line shippers ’ specials, and steam excursions. It also had the marketing finesse to establish the Gas Local, a unit train dedicated to a single customer and run like clockwork. However, as many of the 237 photographs in this volume attest, it is the scenery which sets the entire operation in perspective. In a state of big blue sky, MRL ’s big blue diesels harmonize perfectly. It ’s a match made in Montana heaven.

12 Narrow Gauge to Boston: A Nostalgic Window on the Boston, Revere Beach & Lynn Railroad Frank Kyper
South Platte Press 2010 0942035879 / 9780942035872 soft cover NEW CONDITION BOOK

Narrow Gauge to Boston: A Nostalgic Window on the Boston, Revere Beach & Lynn Railroad.

There was relatively little the Boston, Revere Beach & Lynn Railroad in eastern Massachusetts had in common with most of its three-foot gauge cousins across the United States. Its fleet of diminutive Bogie-type steam locomotives scooted over an eight-mile, sea-level, double-track main line from East Boston to Lynn, plus along a double-track loop branch line through the community of Winthrop, while hauling long strings of wood passenger cars.

Only one leading commodity was ever carried on the BRB&L-passengers from surrounding bedroom communities bound to and from Boston. The railroad interchanged only with its own fleet of ferryboats that carried passengers across Boston Harbor. The BRB&L undertook a costly conversion from steam to electric power on the eve of the Great Depression, only to meet its demise in 1940.

Depicted in more than 150 rare illustrations is the unique story of traveling by Narrow Gauge to Boston.

16 Northern Light: A Portrait of BC Rail Dale Sanders
White River Productions 2010 hard cover with jacket NEW CONDITION BOOK

Northern Light: A Portrait of BC Rail.

A complete retrospective of BC Rail.

Northern Light is an all-color portrait of one of North America ’s most fascinating railways —BC Rail. With 303 full color photographs and 12 lavishly illustrated maps, this volume presents a retrospective of the entire BC Rail system during its 20-year life span between June 1984 and July 2004.

In Northern Light may be found all the elements that made BC Rail so interesting. From its locomotives (including steam, diesel, and electric) to its unique Budd RDC passenger operations, BC Rail was a railway like no other. Besides just machinery, BC Rail ’s right-of-way passed through some of the most beautiful and diverse scenery in North America. Perhaps the railway ’s most valuable feature were the railroaders who performed their assigned duties with professionalism and a passion for railroading.

The photographs of the machines, landscapes, and people included in Northern Light tell the whole story of British Columbia ’s own railway. From the familiar to rare images of remote trackage never before photographed, it ’s all here in one amazing volume.
