510 Southern Pacific Sacramento Division Brian Jennison and Vic Neves
White River Productions 2006 1932804021 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Southern Pacific: Sacramento Division is the second in the series of all-color pictorials of a railroad about which no one is neutral, the Southern Pacific. For those who loved this proud, arrogant company, Southern Pacific: Sacramento Division presents a retrospective on railroading in northern and central California, Nevada and Utah from the late-1950s until the mid-1990s. These were years of transition and decline of the SP ’s influence in the west, however, the photographs and extended captions presented here emphasize the railroad in its former, healthy condition.

With 223 photographs by 45 photographers, Southern Pacific: Sacramento Division presents a thorough look at SP ’s main line and branch line operations from Dunsmuir to Fresno, and from Sacramento to Ogden, all are covered in these pages. The photographs presented here were selected to illustrate the dramatic geographic and geologic conditions through which the Southern Pacific ’s various Sacramento Division lines were built, ranging from pastoral farming scenes to vast deserts and to rugged mountains. It is hoped that, taken together, these volumes will provide a definitive look at what was once the most significant railroad in the American West.

The photo selections in this book present a nice balance between the steam and the first, second and third generations of diesels. Expect to see the rare locomotives, such as the Sulzer-powered U-boats, a Cotton Belt 4-8-4 on the Tracy, California turntable, plus some views inside the Sacramento Shops.

Table of Contents:
Acknowledgments, Foreword, 4-5;
1: Sacramento Valley, pp. 6-25;
2: San Joaquin Valley, pp. 26-45;
3: Valley Branches, pp. 46-55;

512 Pennsylvania Railroad (New 2009 reprint) Brian Solomon
Andover Junction Publications 2009 0760329303 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Pennsylvania Railroad (New 2009 reprint with all new photographs)

The Pennsylvania Railroad is truly an icon of American transportation and, indeed, of American business.

This illustrated history examines the evolution of the mighty “Pennsy ” from a disparate group of early horse-car lines into a twentieth-century transportation giant sprawling across 10,000 route miles in 13 of the nation ’s most populous states.

From humble beginnings in the 1800s, the Pennsylvania Railroad grew into a railroad that Fortune magazine called “a nation unto itself. ” It owned its own shops, coal mines, hotels, communications system, and power plants, not to mention hundreds of depots (including the famous Penn Station in Manhattan), thousands of passenger cars, tens of thousands of freight cars, and a vast fleet of steam, electric, and diesel locomotives. Color and black-and-white photographs and period ads illustrate the railroad ’s many facets, including its passenger and freight operations, as well as its motive power through the decades.

Though the Pennsy was merged out of existence in 1968, an epilogue details the PRR legacies that survive on today ’s modern railroad scene.

513 Southern Pacific Railroad Color History Brian Solomon
Andover Junction Publications 2007 0760329311 NEW CONDITION BOOK

514 ALCo Locomotives Brian Solomon
Voyageur Press 2007 0760333386 NEW CONDITION BOOK

ALCo Locomotives.

Once the second-largest steam locomotive builder in the United States, American Locomotive Company (ALCo) produced 75,000 locomotives, among them such famous examples as the 4-6-4 Hudsons and 4-8-4 Niagaras built for the New York Central, and the 4-6-6-4 Challengers and 4-8-8-4 Big Boys built for the Union Pacific.

ALCo Locomotives is the first book to tell the full story of this company central to American railroad history - and beloved by railfans for its rich heritage and its underdog appeal. Noted rail historian Brian Solomon looks back at the founding of Schenectady Locomotive Works in 1848 and proceeds to cover that company's merger with several smaller locomotive builders in 1901 to form ALCo. Solomon describes the locomotives that made ALCo's name around the world, from the standard designs like Mikados, Atlantics, and Mallets to the more powerful and flashy post –World War I models. His detailed, richly illustrated narrative re-creates the drama of a tough, ambitious company in the American tradition —rising again and again to the demands of an ever-changing industry and economy.

Solomon also covers Alco electrics (built in partnership with General Electric), as well as the company's successful and quirky diesel offerings, including the RS-2 and RS-3 Road-Switchers, FA/FB road freight units, PA road passenger diesel, and the products of Canadian affiliate Montreal Locomotive Works. Enlivened by numerous historical photographs, modern images, curious details, and firsthand accounts, this history is a complete, fascinating, and fitting tribute to a true icon of American railroading.

515 New York Central Railroad Color History Brian Solomon with Mike Schafer
Andover Junction Publications 2007 NEW CONDITION BOOK

In 1999, Brian Solomon wrote a definitive history of the New York Central for Andover Junction Publications. Since then, he has collected 150 vintage black-and-white and color photographs, timetables, and postcards not included in the previous volume to take readers on a rail journey from the 1800s to present.

Through fabulous imagery, four specially commissioned maps, and his authoritative text, Solomon shows why the Central was a classic in every sense, growing under the firm direction of rail baron Cornelius Commodore Vanderbilt. From 1902 to 1967, the New York Central operated the most famous passenger train in the world: the esteemed 20th Century Limited. Additionally, Central's mechanical department developed the legendary 4-6-4 Hudson-type steam locomotive. Although the NYC ceased to exist in 1968, it's alive and well in this new volume.

519 Wings Across America Bruce McAllister
Sono Nis Press 2004 0963881795 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Wings Across America, A Photographic History of the U.S. Air Mail.

This comprehensive photographic history tells of the pioneer air mail pilots who braved bad weather, under-powered aircraft, and impossible schedules as they pushed themselves to the limit, expanding air mail routes across the U.S.A.

With time, the U.S. Air Mail Service developed a system of beacon lights, emergency fields, and communications so that air mail pilots could fly through the night to their destination.>

As trunk lines developed north and south off the main transcontinental route between New York and San Francisco, the need arose for bigger and faster aircraft that could carry both passengers and freight. Wings Across America takes the reader on a photographic journey through this critical phase of U.S. aviation growth —the rise of the air mail carriers that ultimately became airlines.

524 Trackside Along the Boston & Maine: 1945-1975 Carl R. Byron
Morning Sun Books 2005 1582481490 NEW CONDITION BOOK

With Donald G. Hills.

The Boston & Maine Railroad that hired Don Hills in November 1941 was a battered road beginning to enjoy an unfortunately brief Renaissance. Second only to the New Haven Railroad in power and stature across New England, the B&M had reached its peak of mileage and service between 1910 and 1915. With the onset of highway competition and the Great Depression, B&M traffic collapsed - passenger revenues were only half of what they had been in 1929 by 1933. Freight revenues were similarly down. The World War II years were hell on the B&M - but profitable - and the War Production Board allowed new diesel FT sets from General Motors to help alleviate the locomotive shortage. The post-war years held much promise as new diesel locomotives and passenger equipment were purchased. Then Patrick McGinnis arrived and combined with the departure and closing of industries, the opening of turnpikes and the Interstate Highway System and the B&M struggled to survive. Later came the Barriger Era, the Mellon and Springfield Terminal era where the B&M's routes (for the most part) live on. Photographs cover steam, The Flying Yankee, diesels in their as-delivered colors, MBTA, and RDCs.

A History of Union Pacific Railroad Passenger Stations in Omaha, Nebraska, 1866-1971.

This book will describe the Union Pacific Railroads design, construction, and operation of its eight successive Omaha passenger stations of the later nineteenth century, and two different Union Passenger Stations, built in 1899 and 1931 respectively. An end summary will also describe historic preservation efforts from 1973 to the present that saved the 1931 Union Station from destruction and helped make possible its use as the Durham Western Heritage Museum beginning in 1975. Omaha was once the nations fourth largest railroad center and the 1931 Omaha Union Station was built in part to satisfy the demands of local businessmen and the increasing public demand for improved passenger train service to the city. Chapters cover the time period from Omaha before the railroads up to the present use of the station. SPP119

Listen to the Whistle: An Anecdotal History of the Wallkill Valley Railroad in Ulster and Orange Counties, New York

In this first book ever to be published on the Wallkill Valley Railroad, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Carleton Mabee tells the story of a gallant little railroad that connected Orange and Ulster Counties and aspired to be part of a major trunk line reaching from metropolitan New York all the way to Albany.

A human, more than technological, story, it tells not only of hissing steam engines but also of trainmen high in their cabs, farmers shipping milk and fruit, children riding to school, and the weary hearing train whistles as hints of adventure in distant places.

Trackside with EMD Field Representative Casey Cavanaugh, 1960-1962.

Delivering new FL9s, GP18s and GP20s took this camera-toting field rep to the NH, CB&Q, RI, GN, SP and numerous other roads across the country. His behind the scenes commentary makes for enjoyable reading. You might expect many of the photographs to be of the new delivered power, but they are not. Casey 'rail fanned' and so took pictures of whatever was interesting in the area he was working in. That included various ALCos on the New Haven, New Haven electrics, New York Central electrics, E-units on the NYC and C&O, leased Burlington steam on the Bevier & Southern (2 pp. of photographs). The major coverage is of the New Haven, the New York Central in New York, the Santa Fe, the Great Northern in Minneapolis, the Burlington in Nebraska, the Rio Grande in Colorado and the Southern Pacific around El Paso. There are a few pp. on the Baltimore & Ohio, the Milwaukee Road and Grand Trunk Western (steam).

533 Chard Walker's Cajon: Rail Passage to the Pacific Chard Walker
Signature Press 2007 1930013000 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Chard Walker's Cajon: Rail Passage to the Pacific.

Completion of a rail route over Cajon Pass, by the California Southern Railroad, was accomplished in November, 1885. The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe had backed construction of the California Southern, and by 1906 would absorb it into the Santa Fe. Meanwhile, in 1905 the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad began using the pass under trackage rights, the SPLA&SL would later become part of the Union Pacific system.

The ruling grade of 2.2 percent on the west side of the pass (originally 3 percent) required helper locomotives from the beginning, usually they were turned at Summit. Even the east side, with a ruling grade of 1.6 percent, can be an operating challenge. In 1967, Southern Pacific completed its own route over Cajon Pass, also with a ruling grade of 2.2 percent.

The construction and particularly the operation of this line are presented in some detail in this book. Included are chapters on weather, runaways, helper operations, and life at Summit, together with a foreword by Don Sims. Numerous recollections by railroaders and railfans who were there further enrich the book. Supplementing the text are 11 fine maps by John Signor, and some 334 photographs (25 in color). A bibliography and index round out this volume.

The result is an atmospheric and quite complete look at one of the busiest and most dramatic railroad passes in America, from an author well suited to tell the story. Railroad history buffs generally, and Santa Fe fans in particular, will be sure to enjoy this book.

The author, a legendary operator for years at the Summit depot at the top of Cajon Pass, has drawn upon original railroad records, his own extensive experiences, and the recollections of old-timers to create this interesting railroad narrative. Long out-of-print, the return of this classic railroad account is welcome to historians and fans of Union Pacific, Southern Pacific and especially Santa Fe.

537 Prototypes for Modelers Vol. 1: San Diego & Arizona Railway Charles M. O'Herin
Link Pen Publishing 2006 097762790X NEW CONDITION BOOK

Prototypes for Modelers Vol. 1: San Diego & Arizona Railway.

Presenting photographs and descriptions of a standard gauge railroad ’s history, rolling stock, locomotives, structures, and operating terrain.

It ’s been called “the Impossible Railroad. ” This San Diego-based Short Line was the last link constructed in the United States ’ trans-continental railroads, and much of its main line was in Mexico.

Construction was amazing: cut-and-fill and bridges to accommodate the route;
the innovative “Redondo Loop ” to gain elevation into the Laguna Mountains;
and many tunnels and trestles needed to traverse an 11-mile stretch through the treacherous Carrizo Gorge-and then the operating years 1919 to 1932.

It's mountain-scenic route was proclaimed spectacular for passenger travel and advertised to prospective tourists in the east as “The way to see California was to see San Diego first ” through travel on the San Diego Short Line.

As result of how the route was constructed through the Carrizo Gorge, freight train service had to use slower speeds and shorter trains due to tight turns. In addition to being of national historical significance and relevant to its region of operation, creating this railroad was an amazing endeavor by its owners that resulted in an intriguing story.

This is not a model railroad book but a book about the prototype. Construction photographs are prevalent along with a 1920 era roster plus detail photographs of equipment and bridges and trestles. Railroad modelers, hobbyists, and enthusiasts will find something that interests them in this book!

538 White Gold Railroad: Plaster City Narrow Gauge (soft cover) Charles M. O'Herin
Link Pen Publishing 2008 NEW CONDITION BOOK

White Gold Railroad: Plaster City Narrow Gauge (soft cover).

This book is about the last private industrial railroad operating in the U.S., and it is the second book written by Charles O ’Herin, who professes to write about little known railroads. The book conveys the interesting history and unique business story of the Plaster City Narrow Gauge railroad and presents facts and pictorial evidence of its rolling stock, locomotives and related gypsum mining, structures, and environment of its operation.

The railroad ’s history began in 1922, during the era of steam locomotives, and over time was forced to make a transition to diesel power, just as other commercial and industrial railroads in the U.S. had to do. What makes this book a fascinating story are the details behind the original discovery of gypsum, its basis for creating a business venture, and the progression of the railroad through three corporate owners. Also provided is a great pictorial display of an interesting if not unique inventory of the railroad ’s rolling stock and motive power that did and does operate on its rails.

The Plaster City railroad operates over 26 miles end-to-end and has always had only one purpose: haul raw gypsum from a quarry to a processing plant. The location of the gypsum quarry, processing and manufacturing plant, and railroad is in Imperial Valley, California, which was developed in the early 1900s and grew to be an agricultural giant by end of the Great Depression (circa 1939).

Although purpose and function of the railroad is simple to describe, its history is full of details that will be of special and general interest to railroad modelers, hobbyists, enthusiasts, and historians. Many of the photographs have not been previously published. The book includes lists, tables, graphics, and a bibliography. This is a comprehensive book!

541 Great Northern Lines West (Revised Edition) Charles R. Wood
Signature Press 1998 0963379178 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Great Northern Lines West (Revised Edition).

The Great Northern was among Americas most distinctive railroads. Though not the earliest of the transcontinental roads, it traversed scenery as varied and spectacular as any. Its operations over the years, in every kind of weather, were similarly diverse, from plains to mountains, from the Great Lakes shore in Minnesota to Pacific tidewater in Seattle. The style instilled in the Great Northern by its builder, James J. Hill, persisted well into the twentieth century. From its characteristic designs of large steam locomotives and its electrified operations over the Cascade Range, to its superb streamliner after World War II, the Empire Builder, and its unique fleet of diesel locomotives, the Great Northern was always a railroad apart.

The book tells the story of the Great Northern Railway, concentrating on it's western half, the Lines West, which conquered both the Rocky and Cascade Mountains. From its earliest beginnings in 1857, to the completion of the line to the Pacific Coast in 1893, to the modernization of the railroad, first with heavy steam locomotives and then with diesels, and to the merger into Burlington Northern in 1970, the sweep of this great history is here.

Noted Northwest railroad historian Charles R. Wood has combined extensive research and a superb collection of photographs to produce an outstanding history of this noteworthy railroad. With the deftness of a writer who knows his subject, Wood presents a wide-ranging description of the life and times of the western half of the Great Northern. This book is a detailed and complete account of one of America's most fascinating roads, the Great Northern Railway.

The first edition of Lines West was published in 1967. Subsequent printings were in some cases unfortunately of poor quality, which has damaged the reputation of this fine book, and it has now been out-of-print for a number of years. This new edition, made with the original page negatives, restores the quality of the first edition while updating and replacing some photographs and adding a color section and an index. Newly revised with numerous new photographs and a superb new painting by Northwest artist J. Craig Thorpe on the dust jacket and frontispiece, this edition will take its place in the literature of the Great Northern Railway.

ALCo ’s DL-640 Locomotive, A Year of Demonstrations, A Half Century of Service.

Beginning with the 1960 demonstration tours, this book looks back on almost a half-century history of this often underestimated locomotive design that managed to sell only 26 units, but:

• Led to several of ALCo ’s most successful designs in the Century Series.
• Despite a nomadic existence, has achieved a remarkable longevity, led by 2 units that remain in operation today.

Author Chris Mac Dermot chronicles with great insight and rare wit his year riding and technically supporting the demonstrator units. Author Dick Steinbrenner documents the migrations of each of the individual units during the course of their lifetimes.

548 Delaware & Hudson Steam In Color Chuck Yungkurth
Morning Sun Books 2001 1582480435 NEW CONDITION BOOK

The Delaware & Hudson was a very well managed and profitable company for much of its existence. Over the years the conservative D&H management spared no expense in maintaining and upgrading equipment and the property. It quickly adopted some technical innovations and in other places stubbornly kept equipment in use that was regarded as obsolete by contemporary railroad standards.

Nowhere was this management policy more clearly demonstrated than in its roster of steam locomotives. For years the railroad operated with locomotives of designs no longer in use for prime freight service by the industry, yet when the decision was made to modernize they opted for the very newest and latest design steam power.

Author Cliff Downey has given a very complete history of the line and concentrates much of the book on the trains, equipment, and operations, with over 200 excellent b&w and color photographs, maps, and illustrations. 560 Amtrak in the Heartland Craig Sanders
Indiana University Press 2006 025334705X NEW CONDITION BOOK

A comprehensive, fully illustrated history of Amtrak operations in America's heartland.

A complete history of Amtrak operations in the heartland, this volume describes conditions that led to the passage of the Rail Passenger Service Act of 1970, the formation and implementation of Amtrak in 1970 —71, and the major factors that have influenced Amtrak operations since its inception.

More than 140 photographs and 3 maps bring to life the story as told by Sanders. This book will become indispensable to train enthusiasts through its examination of Americans' long-standing fascination with passenger trains. When it began in 1971, many expected Amtrak to last about three years before going out of existence for lack of business, but the public's continuing support of funding for Amtrak has enabled it and the passenger train to survive despite seemingly insurmountable odds.

Craig Sanders teaches journalism and mass media communications at Cleveland State University. A lifelong railroad enthusiast, Sanders has published articles in Trains magazine, The Observation Car, and the Amtrak Historical Society magazine. His books include Limiteds, Locals, and Expresses in Indiana, 1838 —1971.

Contents: Preface and Acknowledgments; Ch. 1: The All-Time Transportation Comeback; Ch. 2: In the Shadows of Titans; Ch. 3: A Tale of Two Trains; Ch. 4: When Tradition and Politics Intervened; Ch. 5: The Hard Luck Floridian; Ch. 6: No Mo' Disappearing Railroad Blues; Ch. 7. 564 Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis: A History of the Dixie Line Dain L. Schult
TLC Publishing 2001 1883089743 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis, A History of the Dixie Line.

Nothing ever came easy for the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis. The terrain it traversed was challenging. While never garnering the media coverage of more famous mountain railroad divisions, the main line between Nashville and Chattanooga created a struggle to find the motive power capable of handling trains of any real size for decades. Being a bridge line, the road was constantly trying to develop on-line industry and passenger service that was its own without having to share with one or more other lines. The NC wasn't parked over terrain that yielded unending seams of black diamonds like certain other Southeastern roads. Through its earliest components, the Nashville & Chattanooga were crucial, integral parts of the struggle for Tennessee during the Civil War. Operating for 77 years as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Louisville & Nashville, capital expenditures were restricted. So to succeed, the NC had to be able to move freight and passengers quickly through its system from one end to the other, using what it had in terms of motive power and rolling stock, squeezing every penny out of every dollar it retained for operations and capital improvements. This is a history book with much text supplanted with b&w photographs with a color photo section at the end of the book. There are a few color equipment pictures, most color pages are advertising items, postcards and models. TLC180

565 The Illinois Terminal Railroad: The Road of Personalized Services Dale Jenkins
White River Productions 2005 1932804005 NEW CONDITION BOOK

The Illinois Terminal Railroad: The Road of Personalized Services.

The Illinois Terminal Railroad that vanished into the Norfolk & Western in 1982 was a markedly different creature than it was as an infant some 75 years earlier. With its arch-windowed electric cars flashing through the fertile central Illinois countryside or trundling through city streets past humming substations, the Illinois Traction System was the epitome of classic interurban carriers in a short-lived epoch of American transportation.

Electric interurban and streetcar railways helped civilize the nation ’s cities while bridging the gap between the horse-and-buggy era and the automobile age. A number of small upstart railway companies eventually grew into the far-flung Illinois Traction System. In the early days Midwesterners were served by ITS passenger and freight operations at a time when interurbans were simply a way of life that most people assumed would never end.

Interurbans came and went with alarming frequency in the early part of the 20th Century. Insufficient capital, competition from parallel steam railroads, the coming of the automobile age, and the Great Depression together or separately proved to be formidable foes for most interurban lines. But the strong survived. Radical change beginning at the end of the “Roaring Twenties ” propelled the largest of all interurbans, “The Traction, ” into the ranks of big-time railroading. World War II and the years immediately after were merciless on American railroads, especially with changes in U.S. transportation policies. Cast aside by America ’s new focus on highway and air transport, the railroads were forced to make radical transformations-or succumb to “progress. ” The IT entered this period still very much an interurban, relying largely on electric power to transport freight and passengers, but it left as an all-diesel, freight-only company.

Beginning in 1956, the railroad found itself in a completely new venue-a unique one, in some respects, compared to other rail carriers, since the IT was now a ward of a contingent of “steam ” railroads. The end of the story revolves around the tenacity of the railroad and its leaders, and it holds still more lessons in how a company adapted-and did so quickly-to survive in an increasingly ruthless, obstacle-ridden corporate world. Yet the Illinois Terminal remained an immensely fascinating operation, right up to the end.

This book is a complete history of the Illinois Terminal, from the turn of the 20th Century to the railroad's demise in 1981. Electric, Steam, and Diesel eras are all covered, complete with rosters, maps, and drawings.

Northern Light: A Portrait of BC Rail.

A complete retrospective of BC Rail.

Northern Light is an all-color portrait of one of North America ’s most fascinating railways —BC Rail. With 303 full color photographs and 12 lavishly illustrated maps, this volume presents a retrospective of the entire BC Rail system during its 20-year life span between June 1984 and July 2004.

In Northern Light may be found all the elements that made BC Rail so interesting. From its locomotives (including steam, diesel, and electric) to its unique Budd RDC passenger operations, BC Rail was a railway like no other. Besides just machinery, BC Rail ’s right-of-way passed through some of the most beautiful and diverse scenery in North America. Perhaps the railway ’s most valuable feature were the railroaders who performed their assigned duties with professionalism and a passion for railroading.

The photographs of the machines, landscapes, and people included in Northern Light tell the whole story of British Columbia ’s own railway. From the familiar to rare images of remote trackage never before photographed, it ’s all here in one amazing volume.

569 V&S: The Victoria & Sidney Railway 1892-1919 Darryl E. Muralt
Sono Nis Press 1992 0969251114 NEW CONDITION BOOK

The Victoria & Sidney was the last link required to complete a full Canadian transcontinental railroad. It was built-all 17 miles of it-and was of critical importance.

The Saga of the Railway: It began as part of a dream - a dream to directly connect lower Vancouver Island to the transcontinental lines by rail and ferry. While that expectation was fulfilled, for some its continued existence became a nightmare. Its schedule was by no means punctual. Some of its station facilities defined the word rustic. The roadbed and equipment received minimal maintenance. Its owners were content to ask the Victoria and provincial governments for annual interest guarantee payments.

There was little incentive for it to be profitable. But, for two decades, beginning in the 1890s, the Cordwood Limited, as it came to be known, was the only service, apart from rural dirt roads, that Saanich Peninsula residents had for travelling to and from Victoria or for shipping and receiving farm products and other goods.

When its 25 year bond issue came due in 1917, it became an unwanted utility destined for receivership. This a story of great expectations, shrewd business, and political dealing. At the same time, it gives a glimpse of the early growth of the Saanich Peninsula and the town of Sidney.

583 Railroads of Nevada and Eastern California Vol. 3: More on the Northern Roads David F. Myrick
University of Nevada Press 2007 0874177014 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Vol. 3: More on the Northern Roads.

The final volume in the complete history of Nevada and Eastern California railroads.

David Myrick's monumental railroad histories have become essential reference works for railroaders, historians, and hobbyists. His previous two volumes on the railroads of Nevada and Eastern California provide a rich record of rail transport in the region, including independent roads, short lines, and narrow-gauge roads, as well as many ephemeral roads built to serve mines or construction projects.

Lavishly illustrated with period photographs and maps, and rich in historical detail, they are a major contribution to the transportation history of the West. Volume III contains additional information about the northern roads, including some not covered in previous volumes, and about developments since the publication of the first two volumes in the railroads of the region. It provides new facts gleaned from the recently discovered correspondence of Collis P. Huntington, one of the builders of the Central Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads. It also covers roads connected with the lumber industry and the construction of electric power plants, and Southern Pacific branch lines, including some that never advanced beyond surveys.

Chapters:
Central Pacific Railroad, pp. 1-46;
Fernley & Lassen Railway Co., pp. 47-72;
Modoc Northern Rwy. and Goose Lake & Southern Rwy., pp. 73-74;

585 Railroads of Arizona Vol. 5: Santa Fe to Phoenix David F. Myrick
Signature Press 2001 1930013051 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Railroads of Arizona Vol. 5: Santa Fe to Phoenix.

This is the fifth volume in David Myrick's acclaimed series of books about Arizona railroading. It is a history of efforts to construct a north-south railroad connecting Phoenix with the Santa Fe main line in northern Arizona, as well as the operations of that and connected lines, such as the route to California with a Colorado River bridge at Parker. The various mining roads tributary to the Peavine, as the Santa Fe line was known, are also here, along with the rich mining history and associated railroads of the area around Prescott, Arizona.

Prescott, capital of Arizona Territory, had no railroad until 1887, despite active mining in the nearby Bradshaw Mountains and the tantalizing completion of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad across northern Arizona in 1881, only fifty miles to the north. Emergence of a railroad to Prescott was to be an important factor in the development of central Arizona. Prescott's first railroad, the Prescott & Arizona Central, only lasted six years, and was succeeded by the Santa Fe, Prescott & Phoenix (the Peavine), a road which eventually became part of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. Later construction of the Parker line, a direct route from the Phoenix area to Southern California, is also described.

The history of these and associated railroads, such as the Bradshaw Mountain Railroad, is presented in this book, from early construction and operation through a rugged and arid territory, to the coming of modernization in the twentieth century. During much of this history, railroads were powered by steam locomotives, and both passenger and freight operations are described here. In addition, the book features numerous images of mines, mills, and mining camps throughout the books territory. Enthusiasts of mining history will also find much to enjoy in this book. The distinguished Western historian David F. Myrick, as in his previous books, brings meticulous research, numerous fine maps, and a superb collection of rare and historic photographs to this new volume of the Arizona series. As always, his writing is authoritative, clear and readable. Railroad artist John Winfield provided a dust jacket painting of a Santa Fe perishable freight train crossing Hell Canyon, north of Prescott, in the early 1950s. This book is a fitting companion to Volume 4, The Santa Fe Route, and is sure to take its place in libraries of railroad and Western history.

586 Burlington Northern Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment David G. Casdorph
Morning Sun Books 2001 1582480672 NEW CONDITION BOOK

For freight car historians, enthusiasts and modelers, the Burlington Northern was a treasure chest of equipment designs. The huge northwest forest products industry was reflected in the initial Burlington Northern freight car fleet. The pre-merger fleets provided large numbers of 50-foot box cars, wood chip gondolas and lumber flats. The Burlington Northern also had a well-maintained fleet of temperature-controlled cars and a large fleet of grain hoppers. With the development of coal production in the Powder River Basin the coal car fleet expanded greatly.

The Burlington Northern acquired nearly 34,000 new-built cars during it's time. After two and a half decades, in 1995, the BN era ended with the Santa Fe merger. The Green freight cars ended and new and repainted cars appeared in 'BNSF brown'.

587 The Central California Traction Company David G. Stanley and Jeffrey J. Moreau
Signature Press 2003 193001306X NEW CONDITION BOOK

The Central California Traction Company: California's Last Interurban.

Central California Traction had its origins in 1902 as a streetcar service in Stockton, California. Conceived by Howard H. Griffiths as an improved system to compete against Stockton's venerable narrow-gauge line, the Stockton Electric Railroad, Griffiths' vision became reality in 1905 with the incorporation of the Central California Traction Company. Modern, standard-gauge electric cars began serving the San Joaquin Valley's inland port city, offering connections to the steam trains of the Southern Pacific, the young Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, and the forthcoming Western Pacific lines. As fate would have it, these three companies would become controlling owners of the CCT in January 1928.

Electric interurban passenger service to nearby Lodi began in 1907 as ownership of the CCT was passed on from Griffiths to wealthy entrepreneurs Herbert and Mortimer Fleishhacker of San Francisco. Further expansion to Sacramento was completed in 1910, with both passenger and freight services offered over the 53-mile line. Soon, 48 daily passenger trains were listed in the timetable, all propelled by a 1,200-volt dc third-rail power distribution system, the first installation of its kind in the United States. Although the Stockton streetcar service was a financial failure, a similar service operated by CCT in Sacramento proved successful and ran from 1910 until 1946.

Interurban passenger service ended in 1933, even as freight business grew substantially. Modernizing the line in 1946, diesel locomotives replaced the juice jacks. Now 101 years after its groundbreaking, the CCT continues to operate as an important freight carrier, and retains its corporate identity.

The complex story of this road's history has been thoroughly researched through the last decade by noted historian Jeff Moreau and by photographer/historian Dave Stanley. They collected a superb set of historic photographs and other materials, and John Signor prepared maps for the book. Stanley also used extensive interviews with employees as well as recollections from his own years as a CCT trainman to complete the story. John Signor created the painting shown on the jacket, depicting a CCT train in street running in Lodi.

The 626 photographs, along with 23 maps, numerous ephemera and graphics, equipment drawings and rosters, and numerous sidebars richly document the story. The company's interaction with its parent railroads as well as with the Sacramento Northern, Stockton Terminal & Eastern, and Tidewater Southern Railways will be of interest to both historians and fans of not only electric railroads but California railroading in general.

599 Pennsylvania Railroad Color Pictorial Vol. 3: Chicago to Camden David R. Sweetland
Four Ways West Publications 2002 1885614543 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Pennsylvania Railroad Color Pictorial Vol. 3: Chicago to Camden.

This book looks at the PRR steam locomotive classes operating during the 1940s and 1950s. Our color photograph trip starts in the Windy City of Chicago and moves over the fast Fort Wayne Line. At Pittsburgh, we stop to visit two steam short lines related to the PRR, the Western Allegheny and the Ligonier Valley, and then move on to the mountain city of Altoona.

From Altoona to Harrisburg, the multi-track mainline had a plentiful supply of steam and diesel-powered trains. Side trips to Sandusky, Sodus Point and Shamokin give us the opportunity to view large Pennsy steam power hauling coal and ore trains. The photographic trip finally ends in Camden, New Jersey, where steam remained in force until 1957 mixed with Baldwin diesels and several oil-electric cars.
