Erie-builts & H20-44s David R. Sweetland
Withers Publishing 1999 1881411222 NEW CONDITION BOOK
Erie-builts and H20-44s: Fairbanks-Morse's 2,000 Horsepower Pioneers.
This is the third book in Withers Publishing series covering opposed-piston-powered locomotives. During the development of the 1,000-horsepower switcher, F-M officials knew that the company would have to produce a road cab unit if it were going to make it in the locomotive business. F-M engineers designed a road locomotive around a car body styled by industrial designer Raymond Loewy.
Since F-M did not have the shop capacity to build a large locomotive itself, it contracted that work to General Electric, which produced the units at its Erie, Pa., plant, hence the name Erie-built. GE went on to build 111 of the distinctive locomotives for the Union Pacific, Santa Fe, Milwaukee Road, Kansas City Southern, New York Central, and Pennsylvania railroads.
With a 1,000-horsepower switcher and a 2,000-horsepower road cab unit, F-M wanted to enter the road-switcher market. During 1946, the company's engineering team designed a 2,000-horsepower end-cab unit for its first road switcher, named the Heavy Duty unit. Few railroads saw the H20-44s potential-moving tonnage at a higher speed than could a typical 1,500- and 1,600-horsepower four-axle road switcher of the era. In all, 96 H20-44s were sold to five customers.
Withers Publishing, soft cover, 8.5 x 11 x .25 in., 92 pages (22 pages in color), 167 photographs (40 in color);

New Haven Color Pictorial Vol. 1: The West End David R. Sweetland
Four Ways West Publications 2002 1885614470 NEW CONDITION BOOK
New Haven Color Pictorial Vol. 1: The West End.
In this book we will take a look at the New Haven's electric locomotives and multiple unit cars. New Haven was the pioneer of main line AC electrification in the United States. Due to the New York State Act of 1903, steam locomotives would be banned in Grand Central Terminal and the Park Avenue Tunnel by July 1, 1908.
New Haven's experience with DC was that it was only good for light traction. So, in order to operate over its own lines and into Grand Central, the New Haven would have to operate on both a 650 volt DC third rail and 11,000 volt AC overhead wire, a formidable challenge for 1905-1907. This four track mainline electrification would be expanded to New Haven, Conn. by 1914, Cedar Hill Yard by 1915 and over the Hell Gate Bridge route by 1917.
The route covered includes from New York City on to New Haven and Springfield, Connecticut with photographs of the electrics and diesels and includes an electric locomotive roster.

Pennsylvania Railroad Color Pictorial Vol. 1: Altoona to New York City David R. Sweetland
Four Ways West Publications 2002 1885614349 NEW CONDITION BOOK
Pennsylvania Railroad Color Pictorial Vol. 1: Altoona to New York City.
The Pennsylvania Railroad had a proud tradition of designing standard steam locomotive classes. At the end of World War II, the PRR rostered only eighteen diesel switchers of Baldwin and EMD design and had two road passenger units on order. All other motive power was steam or electric. In order to reduce costs and improve the post-war operating ratio, the PRR started a massive dieselization program in 1947 that would take 10 years to complete and required orders from all five locomotive builders.
Cab units from four of the builders were the preferred motive power during the late 1940s and the early 1950s. It is these cab units that are the focus of this book and displayed through a selection of color photographs. Included are a number of steam and electric photographs and a system map.

Four Ways West Publications 2002 1885614403 NEW CONDITION BOOK
Pennsylvania Railroad Color Pictorial Vol. 2: St. Louis to New York City.
This volume begins with a section on the development of electric locomotives on the Pennsylvania Railroad. At Enola, our train moves under the wire for its journey to New York City.

Introduced in 1947, the 1,500-horsepower H15-44 was one of two models offered by the builder that shared a common platform the other was the 2,000-horsepower H20-44 model. In 1950, the prime mover was re-rated to 1,600 horsepower and the H16-44 was born. When production of the H16-44 ended in 1963, a total of 299 H15/16s had been built for 24 customers, becoming one of F-M s most successful models.

Baltimore & Ohio In Color Vol. 1 David T. Mainey
Morning Sun Books 2003 1582480958 NEW CONDITION BOOK
The early photographs in this book date to the 1940s and 1950s, a time of profound transformations in American society, a time witness to economic depression, war, and emergence into relative prosperity. For the Railfan, it was perhaps the best of times and worst of times. Old steam was passing away making way for new diesel. Diversity was commonplace with 5 major diesel locomotive builders offering different looking and different sounding products.
The B&O participated in this diversity and flux until 40 years after the end of WWII, the B&O disappeared into the CSX amalgam. The photographs in this volume help illuminate what was unfortunately the regress of the nation's first railroad.

Baltimore & Ohio steam locomotives manifested an intriguing mix of elegance and utility, with some classes synthesizing both qualities. Colorado Railroad Museum 2006 0918654777 NEW CONDITION BOOK
Western Pacific: The Last Transcontinental Railroad. Colorado Rail Annual No. 27.
This carefully researched and well-written book by an eminent railroad historian describes the conception and building of the Western Pacific, a railroad that was a Pacific extension for the Denver & Rio Grande.
Early surveys, complex financial arrangements, difficulties encountered during construction, effects of the San Francisco earthquake and the financial panic of 1907 are covered in detail. So are colorful events and personalities such as Hindu workers and tycoons Gould, Harriman and Hill. The railroad endured two receiverships and eventually experienced post-World War II prosperity.

Logging Railroads in Skagit County Dennis Blake Thompson
Northwest Short Line 1989 0915370069 NEW CONDITION BOOK
Logging Railroads in Skagit County: The First Comprehensive History of the Logging Railroads in Skagit County, Washington State, USA.
This book is packed full of striking black and white photographs of early country logging camps, unique engines and the men who worked-and occasionally died-operating the huge machines.
Author Dennis Thompson spent more than 10 years painstakingly researching the fascinating and colorful early logging operations in Washington State's Skagit County. The result, 308 pages with 411 photographs and dozens of drawings, is an incredible portrayal of an important early industry in a rugged and untamed land. Through a combination of personal experience, countless interviews, and scores of hours pouring over historical archives, Dennis presents a complete and very interesting account and a well-chronicled period of our history.
From the small operations that probably would have faded from memory forever to the area giants such as English Logging Company and Bloedel-Donovan Lumber Mills, you'll get complete details: How, why, where and when they started, what kind of equipment they used, what areas they worked, and ultimately what became of them. Backing up the concise, interesting, and often amusing text are some outstanding photographs that complete the story. From life in a logging camp to the perils of a locomotive wreck, you'll see it all.
The first printing of this book sold out quickly after readers discovered exactly how interesting and unique this work truly is. This printing features the same high-quality 80# acid-free glossy stock and is hard covered with a dust jacket.

The Revolutionary Diesel: EMC's FT Diesel Era
Withers Publishing 1996 1881411028 NEW CONDITION BOOK
Following up on the success of its streamlined main line passenger diesels in the late 1930s, Electro-Motive Corp. challenged the century-long dominance of steam locomotives in freight service. The vehicle for this attack was a four-unit A-B-B-A demonstrator set of a new model, the FT. When it finished an 11-month, 83,064 mile tour over 20 railroads in 1939-1940, the contest was already over. Only the urgency of World War II traffic demands stood between the great steam fleet and the scrap yard. 250-plus color and black-and-white photographs with a four-color cover printed on heavyweight stock.

The GP20 and SD24 locomotive models can trace their roots to the horsepower race that began in earnest in 1952 when Fairbanks-Morse began promoting its newest creation, the 2,400-horsepower Train Master. Also competition outside the industry as motor carriers were increasingly taking away long-haul shipments from railroads caused carriers to look at ways to speed up train schedules - and this translated into more horsepower. To get that necessary increase in horsepower, EMD installed turbochargers for the first time ever on factory-delivered diesel-electrics. This book discusses the competition between the loco builders and details EMD's first turbocharged models.

EMD's SW8: America's Medium-Horsepower Switcher Diesel Era
Withers Publishing 2001 1881411338 NEW CONDITION BOOK
To fill the gap between the 600-horsepower SW1 and the 1,000-horsepower SW7, EMD introduced its 800-horsepower SW8 model in 1950. Over the next four years, General Motors built a total of 366 SW8s for 49 U.S. and nine Canadian customers at both its Electro-Motive Division plant at La Grange, IL and General Motors Diesel Division facility at London, Ontario. Class 1 carriers received 217 units, short lines and terminal railroads, 97 units, and industrial operators, 52 units.
Powered by the same basic 567-series prime mover as that first introduced in 1939, the SW8 carried an eight-cylinder version of the 567B engine. The car body and equipment layout nearly duplicated its predecessors, but options ordered by customers, and in some cases, added after their delivery, helped to customize the SW8s look. From the optional dynamic brake equipment specified by Lehigh Valley and Southern Pacific, to the distinctive handrail cages by Nickel Plate Road, each owner gave its SW8s a distinctive look.

Withers Publishing 2006 188141146X NEW CONDITION BOOK
EMD's SW1500: Second-Generation Workhorse.
Following a long progression of end-cab switchers beginning in 1939, EMD's SW1500 model was introduced at the zenith of switcher production, the 1960s and 1970s. Featuring the builder s newly introduced 645-series prime mover, the model offered customers a unit that was suitable for yard, local, and even road freight service.
During the model s eight-year production cycle, no distinct construction changes took place, but options specified by the 58 original customers, such as truck style, fuel tank capacity, and handrail placement, divided the production into eight separate groups.
This 124-page soft cover book covers these pioneering diesels in text, 110 color and 325 b&w photographs, and drawings in the style you ve come to expect from Withers Publishing.

ALCo's HH Series Switchers Diesel Era
Withers Publishing 2006 1881411478 NEW CONDITION BOOK
The American Locomotive Company's introduction to the diesel locomotive came from the industry practice of commercial steam locomotive builders supplying carbodies to electric locomotive builders, such as General Electric Co. and Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co.
In 1927, GE decided to bring all of its locomotive work in-house and build complete locomotives at its Erie, Pa., plant. This ended GE s commercial partnership with Alco, which had been in effect for approximately 30 years. As a result, if Alco were to remain in the diesel locomotive building business, it would have to do so at its own manufacturing facilities at Schenectady, N.Y.
The first step taken by most builders of then-new diesel-electric locomotives was to acquire an existing company that produced diesel engines. Alco acquired the McIntosh & Seymour Corp. in 1928 and by 1930, was offering a line of 300- and 600-horsepower locomotives. This line soon developed into what is known today as the High Hood or HH series of locomotives.
Between 1932 and 1940, Alco built 176 HH units, ranging from 600 to 1,000 horsepower, for a wide cross-section of America s railroads. Even today, some 60 years later, a handful of the units remains in service at industrial operations across the country.

Train Master: The Most Useful Locomotive Ever Built Diesel Era with David R. Sweetland
Withers Publishing 1997 1881411133 NEW CONDITION BOOK
From the start, the Train Master was a curious creation. Coming from the smallest of the serious diesel locomotive builders, it was the most powerful single-engine road-switcher unit in the locomotive market. Its builder, Fairbanks, Morse & Company, intended it to be a universal workhorse, one that, through the use of a skillful advertising campaign, promised to be all things to all railroads.
This book covers this locomotive with chapters on the car body phases, the all-time Train Master roster, dispositions and the 'Baby Trainmaster'. Each railroad that owned the Train Master has its own chapter. Also included is a color photo section, diagrams, illustrations of advertising material, bibliography and index.

ALCo's Century Series Vol. 1: Four-Axle Models Diesel Era with Stephen McMillan
Withers Publishing 2003 1881411389 NEW CONDITION BOOK
In April 1963, ALCo Products, Inc., introduced the Century line of diesel-electric locomotive models to the North American market. Designed to compete with the latest designs from General Motors and General Electric, initial offerings included the 2,000-horsepower C-420 and 2,400-horsepower C-424. Both models rode on B-B trucks, production of a C-C truck model, designated the C-628, began in late 1963.
But this was to be the last hurrah of what was, at one time in aggregate, the nation s largest locomotive builder. Between 1848 and 1963, the American Locomotive Company (its name was changed to ALCo Products in 1955) and its multiple predecessors built more than 90,000 locomotives. Most of these were steam locomotives, with the builder producing its first successful diesel-electric in 1924. Century production lasted for only five years, as competition from a onetime ally, General Electric, ate away at ALCo s market share. Production of the Century line ended in 1969, although the designs continued to be built in Canada for another six years. In all, 805 C-series and 168 M-series (the Canadian designation for post-1968 production) models were produced.
These distinctive models will be covered in three books. Each book will contain 160 8.5 x 11-inch vertical-format pages and be perfect bound. Each book will feature more than 250 crisp color and black-and-white photographs. The first book will cover the four-axle models, the second will cover the six-axle models, and the third will cover the Canadian M-series models, as well as secondary owners and operators in North America.

Railroad Photography: Western States Donald Duke
Golden West Books 2004 0870951203 NEW CONDITION BOOK
Railroad Photography Western States: The railroad photography of Robert O. Hale.
This book written by Donald Duke at the request of Malcolm McCarter presents some of the photographs of Robert O. Hale. Hale was a young navy photographer stationed at San Diego, California with an interest in railroading acquired through his step-fathers employment at a roundhouse in Louisville, Kentucky. Hale's specialties were night photography, panned shots (following trains with the camera at a slow shutter speed leaving the background blurred), and time exposures. Since Bob Hale lived in California his photograph collection emphasizes the railroading in this state and the era was the steam to diesel locomotive transition.
The photographs in this book are black and white and the captions by Duke explain the photographs.

Santa Fe: Railroad Gateway to the American West Vol. 1 Donald Duke
Golden West Books 1995 0870951106 NEW CONDITION BOOK
Santa Fe: The Railroad Gateway to the American West Vol. 1: Chicago-Los Angeles-San Diego.
The name Santa Fe began with the early history of the Southwest, grew with the flow of commerce that followed the old Santa Fe Trail, and became a popularized term by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. For the past century this name has been associated with a famous fleet of streamlined passenger trains, and today's piggyback and container trains.
This is the first of three volumes featuring the Santa Fe System. Volume One features the organization of the railroad back in 1866, follows its construction from Topeka to California, from Topeka to Chicago, and operation of the trains. It covers the roads venture into Mexico, development of local lines within California, tells about electrification possibilities, the Santa Fe bus system, Santa Fe's venture into air-rail transportation with participation in Transcontinental Air Transport, Santa Fe Skyways, mergers, and up to the pending merger with Burlington Northern (1995).
This volume also presents a comprehensive review of the Santa Fe's motive power fleet from the earliest 4-4-0 type locomotives, to the giant 2-10-10-2s. The Santa Fe was an early pioneer of diesel motive power due to the alkali water across the desert lands of the Southwest. Described are the rail motor cars, the diesel switchers, the General Purpose diesels, the GE U-boats, and the most modern Super Fleet motive power.
Included are more than 476 illustrations, 27 color plates, documentary reproductions, maps, appendix, bibliography and index.

West Coast Interurbans: California Donald Duke
Golden West Books 2007 0870951262 NEW CONDITION BOOK
This book presents a pictorial history of California interurbans, beginning in San Diego and following the coastline up to Los Angeles, where the largest interurban system, the Pacific Electric Railway, operated. The story then moves north to the San Francisco Bay region, where there were numerous carriers, and finally into California's legendary wine country.
The Golden State of California was once a beehive of interurban electric railways, and the interurban played a major role in the development of intercity public transportation. Replacing the infrequent and costly steam railroad branch line network, the interurban grew and expanded at about the same time as the motor car. The interurban outpaced the motor car until the Depression. But the convenience of the motor car won the battle for users and only those interurbans that operated freight, express and mail service and offered commuter trains were able to survive until after World War II. The convenience of the automobile and the motor bus triggered the eventual demise of the interurban system.

Pacific Electric Railway Vol. 4: The Western Division Donald Duke
Golden West Books 2004 978087095122X NEW CONDITION BOOK
Henry Edward Huntington's impact on the public transportation system of Southern California was far reaching. His Pacific Electric red interurban went everywhere. That is except for the western portions of Los Angeles county where Moses Sherman and E. P. Clarks 180-mile Los Angeles Pacific Railroad dominated. By 1903, Huntington and the Southern Pacific controlled by Edward H. Harriman had become partners in the Pacific Electric.
During March 1906, Harriman negotiated with Sherman and Clark, for control of their railway. In the meantime Huntington operating on his own acquired the narrow-gauge Los Angeles and Redondo Railway. It had 89 miles of track, including 3 lines to Redondo Beach. Harriman always had in his mind the merging of the Pacific Electric with the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad, thus forming a huge interurban empire. R.S. Lovett, Harriman's successor at Southern Pacific negotiated the sale of Huntington's interest in Pacific Electric to Southern Pacific by November of 1910 for an undisclosed sum. Once the Southern Pacific had control of the Pacific Electric, the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad was merged into the Pacific Electric, thus becoming the Western Division of the Pacific Electric. This book covers the Western Division of the Pacific Electric.

RDC: The Budd Rail Diesel Car Donald Duke and Edmund Keilty
Golden West Books 1990 0870951033 NEW CONDITION BOOK
RDC: The Budd Rail Diesel Car.
The self-propelled rail motor car was nearly extinct by the time the Budd Company's Red Lion plant near Philadelphia, rolled out a new rail concept during September 1949. The firm announced to the railroad world that it had something that might save the day for branch line, suburban, and commuter rail service. The newcomer, dressed in stainless steel, and looking like a streamlined vista-domed coach, was Rail Diesel Car No. 2960. Budd called this speedy self-propelled train, bristling with the latest rail innovations, simply RDC.
RDC: The Budd Rail Diesel Car is the complete story of this unique railcar, from its conception to current status. This book discusses how the cars were built, their controls, and the various railroads that purchased them. There is a section about stainless steel and the shot welding' process, and a biography of the late Edward G. Budd.
The SPV-2000, a state of the art self-propelled vehicle is described as a troubled 'advancement' in RDC design. The large appendix section includes a description of each railroad that ran RDCs, how they were utilized, a complete roster, and a map showing the route of the RDCs. At the end of the book is a complete roster of RDCs by builders number. With more than 375 illustrations (8 pages. in color), maps, drawings, extensive appendix, bibliography and index.

Steam Locomotives of the Kansas City Southern Donald G. Campbell
South Platte Press 2000 0942035542 NEW CONDITION BOOK
Not much has been reported about steam power on the KCS. In 1964, Don Campbell wrote Modern Steam Locomotives of the KCS for The Bulletin of the National Railroad Historical Society. Don carries this article forward in this book and, in addition, reports on the earlier steam power. KCS motive power policies in the Steam Era were different from other Southwestern District railroads which did not have grades of 1.8 percent on their main lines. Maximum tractive force at low speeds was the key, hence KCS started using 0-6-6-0 Mallet compounds in 1912 and 127 ton 2-8-0s in 1913. Compound working 2-8-8-0s of 294.5 tons and with 147,000 pounds of tractive force followed in 1918. Skipping the popular 2-8-2 type, the KCS made the shift to high speed freight power with the purchase of ten 2-10-4s from Lima in 1937. As the largest locomotives in the Southwest, the big Texas types did yeoman service between Kansas City and De Queen, Arkansas until their replacement by diesel power, followed by scraping in 1953. Numerous black and white photographs supplement the text which includes locomotives by class with specifications, a 1945 freight and passenger timetable and charts of locomotive tonnage ratings. Silver City Narrow Gauge: New Mexico Two Footer Duane Ericson
M2FQ Publications 2007 NA NEW CONDITION BOOK
Silver City Narrow Gauge. New Mexico Two Footer: The Story of the 2' Gauge Silver City, Pinos Altos & Mogollon Railroad.
In 1905, after a number of years of low metal prices and little mining activity, things began to boom in the Silver City area of New Mexico. The Comanche Mining and Smelting Co. acquired the Silver City, Pinos Altos & Mogollon, a 'paper' railroad, to lower transportation costs for their mining operations. The decision was made to construct a narrow gauge railroad as there wasn't much traffic expected to be directly interchanged with the Santa Fe Railway.
In early 1905, the little narrow gauge line purchased two used Shay locomotives from the Gilpin Tramway located in Colorado for construction of the line. These two tiny Shays were too small for heavy ore trains and two larger Shays were ordered from Lima Locomotive and Machine Company.
Unfortunately as copper prices rose and then fell, the little narrow gauge railroad's business cycled with the mining activity. After only a few short years, Silver City's narrow gauge faded into oblivion. This book attempts to capture as much of this little line's history as possible.
Contents:
Ch. 1: Local History, pp. 9 21;
Ch. 2: The Narrow Gauge, pp. 22 37;
Ch. 3: Operations on the Narrow Gauge, pp. 38 48;
Ch. 4: An Untimely Demise, pp. 49 61;
Ch. 5: Conclusion, pp. 62 72.

Spokane, Portland & Seattle Color Guide to Freight & Passenger Equipment.
The Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway was the brainchild of James J. Hill, the Empire Builder, who controlled both the Northern Pacific and Great Northern railroads. Wanting a more direct connection to Portland, Oregon, Hill created what was to be the SP&S. The Northwest's Own Railroad had a varied and quite independent roster apart from its parents.

Union Pacific Diesels In Color Vol. 1: 1934-1959 Ed Austin
Morning Sun Books 2003 1582481113 NEW CONDITION BOOK
Like so many U.S. railroads, the Union Pacific began Dieselization cautiously during the Great Depression. The steam locomotive had been the stalwart of American railroading since before the Union Pacific was conceived and as the decade of the 1930s began few individuals foresaw the revolution in railroad motive power that was to come or how soon the change would be complete.
The scope of this book illustrates in full color the transition from steam to complete dieselization during the years 1934-1959. This book begins with the UP before diesels with some color steam and motorcar photographs. Then in chronological order the roster acquisitions through the timeline are presented.

Tri State Traction: The Interurban Trolleys Edward A. Conrad
Heartland Rails 2004 0976184702 NEW CONDITION BOOK
Tri-State Traction: The Interurban Trolleys of Southwest Missouri, Southeast Kansas and Northeast Oklahoma.
Tri-State Traction, a book by Edward A. Conrad, compiles the history of the Joplin & Pittsburgh Railway, along with the Southwest Missouri Railroad and the Northeast Oklahoma Railroad. In the 1890s and the early 20th century, this web of trolley lines connected the communities and mining camps of southeast Kansas, southwest Missouri and northeast Oklahoma. I've always been interested in this field, Conrad said. I grew up in Milwaukee, and have childhood memories of riding the street cars in the 1940s. I've had a lifelong ambition about some of these lines that hadn't been covered. I heard about these rail lines, and found that they hadn't been written about in the last 40 years.
Conrad did extensive research on all three lines. He said that he obtained a great deal of information from Randy Roberts, curator of Special Collections at Axe Library, Pittsburgh State University, and also from area newspapers. He also came to the area and drove over some of the old railroad right of ways. He discovered fascinating things about all three lines, including the J&P, which provided electric rail passenger and freight service in southeast Kansas from 1890 to 1954.
Conrad said that the Pittsburgh Electric Railway Company received a charter on Feb. 8, 1890, to build two miles of track running north and south on Broadway. The first cars began running on Oct. 20 of that year. The cars were stored in a newly built car barn and light repair shop on the southwest corner of 20th and Broadway.
The second electric railway in Pittsburgh was the Forest Park Line, organized on Jan. 25, 1891, with track going along Fourth Street east and west of Broadway. The Forest Park Line was built to minimal standards, with a single line of trolley poles running down the middle of the street about a foot from the south side of the cars, Conrad said. Passengers were told not to put their heads out the windows on the pole side, but people did keep looking out to see what made the trolley go. There were several injuries and at least two fatalities. He said that, at its peak in 1910, the J&P employed about 375 people, most of them living in Pittsburgh, and was the only means of transit for riders and shippers of freight in an area bounded by Girard, Mulberry, Joplin, Mo., Columbus and West Mineral.
Gradually, the train line dwindled. By June 1934, the J&P was a freight-only short line extending from Pittsburgh southeast to the Chitwood district of Joplin, north and east to Mulberry, and southwest to Cherokee. And, on Jan. 27, 1954, the train made its final trip into Pittsburgh. In March, it was sold to a metal recycling business in Chicago and the S.A. Rose Iron and Metal Company, Pittsburgh. Some trolley brackets were sold to local farmers, who used them as fence posts. There are a few traces left of the old rail lines. An old J&P car barn at the end of West Fourth has been converted into a house. A J&P Buda handcar is among the exhibits at the Heart of the Heartlands Railroad Museum at Carona. And a J&P locomotive is on display at the St. Louis Museum of Transportation. As far as I know, that's the only remaining J&P locomotive, Conrad said.

Heartland Traction: The Interurban Lines of Kansas City Edward A. Conrad
Heartland Rails 2006 NEW CONDITION BOOK
Heartland Traction: The Interurban Lines of Kansas City
For almost half a century, a web of electric interurban trolleys radiated from the two Kansas Cities in every direction except east and southeast. The big cars of five interurban lines sped along to the nearby towns of Olathe, East Zarah, Lawrence, Leavenworth, St. Joseph and Excelsior Springs. Ranging from one so impoverished all of its life that it could only afford second-hand cars to a superbly built system that was the equal of any steam road, the lines were built during a time of incredible optimism in the future of electrified transit throughout the country, where virtually every city and town would someday be linked together with a pair of rails and a trolley wire.
Some builders were local businessmen who spent up to two decades raising modest sums of money to build their lines, and then continued to operate them despite years of losses. Others were wealthy Eastern investors who quickly built their lines, and just as quickly abandoned them when they began to lose riders. Above all it is the story of realistic entrepreneurs and impractical visionaries who wanted to share in the riches and success of Americas transformation into the worlds undisputed commercial and industrial colossus.
In Heartland Traction you will learn:
Which line was featured in several promotional motion pictures.
Which line hauled bodies for burial at $2 a ride.
Why the US Supreme Court got involved in the meaning of a red line.
Which line suggested streetcars that could climb and descend Mount Oread in Lawrence, Kansas using underground buckets of water as counterweights.
Which interurban was built one hundred years ago to service a small planned suburban community that grew to become the second largest municipality in the metro area.

The Pennsy In Chicago Edward M. DeRouin
Pixels Publishing 2009 0972874321 NEW CONDITION BOOK
The Pennsy In Chicago: Number 3 in the Midwestern Rail Series.
Many books have been written about the late, great Pennsylvania Railroad, but few have given the Chicago Terminal Division much attention. This book changes that.
The Pennsylvania Railroad grew from a company seeking a route from the burgeoning port city of Philadelphia across the mountains of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania into a goliath. By many measures, it was the largest railroad in the United States. As its dominance developed, it proudly proclaimed that it had become The Standard Railroad of the World. Its rails reached westward. Ultimately, Chicago became one (St. Louis and Peoria were the others) of its three westernmost terminals.
The Pennsy enjoyed two distinct main lines into Chicago and a number of local routes that provided access to industry and enhanced operating flexibility. The South Chicago & Southern is commonly known, the Englewood Connecting Line lesser known, and the Calumet River Line, Calumet Western Railway, Cummings Branch, and State Line & Indiana City known only to a few historians.
This book explores how the Chicago terminal functioned, the history of the routes, traffic and industrial development, and business with connecting railroads. Interviews with former Pennsy railroaders give an insight into the human element of railroading in Chicago during the years following World War II up to the merger with New York Central.

Chicago Union Station Edward M. DeRouin
Pixels Publishing 2003 0972874305 NEW CONDITION BOOK
Chicago Union Station: A Look at Its History and Operations Before Amtrak.
Chicago Union Station is the newest of Chicago's great railway terminals. Its creators recognized the potential of combining the newest building and railway technologies. The stations architects created a design in accordance with the Chicago Plan, an elegant design for a city rising from the success of the Columbian Exhibition of 1893.
Chicago Union Station was served by four major railroads all coming from different directions, at different times with one common purpose-to extend their properties and participate in the growing commerce of Chicago. The railroads serving the station were the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific (The Milwaukee Road), and the Chicago and Alton (later merged with the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio). This book is intended to provide a glimpse into the exciting history of and daily operations at Chicago Union Station in the years before Amtrak. Enjoy the journey.

Morning Sun Books 2001 1582480494 NEW CONDITION BOOK
To understand the purpose and character of the C&EI one must consider the territory it served. C&EI not only served the needs of its Illinois and Indiana customers;
it also became an important link providing a bridge to and from Chicago to railroads of the southeast and southwest. Its first class passenger service was well known in its territory and those who rode its trains remember it fondly. The C&EI disappeared in the 1970s but its colorful operations are immortalized in this book.
