Title: Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis - A History of the Dixie Line

Seller ID: TL180

Nothing ever came easy for the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis. The terrain it traversed was challenging. While never garnering the media coverage of more famous mountain railroad divisions, the mainline between Nashville and Chattanooga created a struggle to find the motive power capable of handling trains of any real size for decades. Being a bridge line, the road was constantly trying to develop on-line industry and passenger service that was its own without having to share with one or more other lines. The NC wasn't parked over terrain that yielded unending seams of black diamonds like certain other Southeastern roads. Through it's earliest components, the Nashville & Chattanooga were crucial, integral parts of the struggle for Tennessee during the Civil War. Operating for 77 years as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Louisville & Nashville, capital expenditures were restricted. So to succeed, the NC had to be able to move freight and passengers quickly through its system from one end to the other, using what it had in terms of motive power and rolling stock, squeezing every penny out of every dollar it retained for operations and capital improvements. This is a history book with much text supplanted with b&w photos with a color photo section at the end of the book. There are a few color equipment pictures, most color pages are advertising items, postcards and models. Retail $39.95.
