The past decade has seen several privately sponsored freight trains run especially for photographers on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic. A run advertised as the final one took place in September of 1990. Jim Trowbridge organized a special photographers' freight train appropriately named the San Juan Express. This trip was unusual in that it covered the entire length of the railroad, showing the wide variety of scenery along the way.
