The Delaware & Hudson was a very well managed and profitable company for much of its existence. Over the years the conservative D&H management spared no expense in maintaining and upgrading equipment and the property. It quickly adopted some technical innovations and in other places stubbornly kept equipment in use that was regarded as obsolete by contemporary railroad standards. Nowhere was this management policy more clearly demonstrated than in its roster of steam locomotives. For years the railroad operated with locomotives of designs no longer in use for prime freight service by the industry, yet when the decision was made to modernize they opted for the very newest and latest steam power.
