Southern Pacific in Transition

Author Name: Bill Shippen and Joe Shine

Title: Southern Pacific in Transition

Seller ID: FW137

As the 1980s approached, it became clear in the economic environment of mega-mergers that the Southern Pacific would have to find a merger partner. It was in this climate that talks between the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific resumed after initial talks had broken off in 1980. It was during this era that the 'Kodachrome' red and yellow SPSF paint scheme was adopted, with several hundred locomotives being repainted before the ICC rejected the merger as being anti-competitive. Philip Anschutz, owner of the Denver & Rio Grande Western took advantage of the non-merger of the SP and merged it with his D&RGW. It is photos and the history during this transitional period, between the Rio Grande/Southern Pacific merger of 1988 and the UP/SP merger of 1996, that this book presents. Sections include Diesel Locomotive Paint Schemes 1939 - 1996, Last Days Over Tehachapi, SP's Elvas Tower, Flatonia, TX (SP's last manual interlocking tower), and the SP/Rio Grande/Cotton Belt Diesel Locomotive Roster and Southern Pacific in Action. Retail $49.95.
