Carstens Publications 1999 0911859055 / 9780911859058 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Patent models were among the very first locomotive and train models made over 150 years ago. As railroads expanded, a demand grew for models of these fabulous, smoke belching locomotives. Wood and paper models were followed by lithographed tin pull toys and cast iron windups and then electric models.

The scale model industry started small as men like Paul Egolf, Fred Icken, Rollin Lobaugh, Bill Walthers, Gordon Varney, Hugh Nason, and Howell Day began producing scale kits. Read about the start of NMRA, TCA, TTOS, HIAA, and MRIA.

7 20th Century Limited Karl R. Zimmermann
Andover Junction Publications 2002 0760314225 / 9780760314227 NEW CONDITION BOOK

In the history of American railroading, no train stands taller than the 20th Century Limited, New York Central's famous flagship that plied the 'Water Level Route' between Chicago and New York from 1902 until 1967.

This book tells the complete story of this extraordinary train, from its illustrious beginning in the days of opulent wooden cars through its demise in the era of passenger-train cutbacks. Along the way, this chronicle recounts the Century's operation in multiple sections (as many as seven in one direction) in the 1920s and 30s, when it ran with heavyweight Pullmans, as well the streamline era, ushered in with industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss' elegant train of 1938.

The Century was a train of magnates and movie stars, with a red carpet rolled out for departure from Chicago to New York City. With the finest of food in the diner and a full array of amenities: barber, secretary, shower, and maid the 20th Century Limited set the standards against which all other passenger trains would be measured.

More then 200 photographs and illustration, including dozens of black-and-white archival images, and period color photographs, as well as dinnerware, menus, advertisements, route maps, and interior views provide a dramatic visual account of the most famous of all passenger trains.

A Practical Introduction to Digital Command Control for Railway Modellers.

As you may guess from the spelling in the title, this is a book from the UK. Though, it is an excellent DCC reference for 'modellers' in all countries and scales.

The book emphasizes the benefits of DCC technology as a model railway control system and offers practical advice on the choice of systems, applying the technology to a layout, how to use it to enhance layout operations, and how it can be used to overcome practical difficulties with operations such as banking, double-heading, lighting and sound.

Technical jargon is avoided and clear descriptions of each project featured in the book will remove the mystery surrounding DCC. Many of the modeling projects may be adapted for almost any modeling situation and are supported by over 400 excellent color photographs.

20 A Railway to the Isle Ted Rafuse
Steampower Publishing 2005 0968547427 / 9780968547427 NEW CONDITION BOOK

A Railway to the Isle: A History of the Strait of Canso Railway Car Ferries 1890-1955.

In A Railway to the Isle author Ted Rafuse captures the saga of the nautical railway link on the Strait of Canso that once connected the port of Mulgrave, Nova Scotia, on the mainland and Point Tupper on Cape Breton Island. The railway ferries SS Mulgrave, SS Scotia I and SS Scotia II chronicle this unusual connection from its Intercolonial Railway beginnings through Canadian National Railways operation.

Both rail and marine operations associated with the cross Canso service are chronicled through the use of many previously unpublished photographs, diagrams, maps and personnel recollection. The author has a family kinship to the area as his grandmother lived in Port Hawkesbury and his grandfather, deceased before Ted was born, was roundhouse foreman at Point Tupper.

As a youngster during the 1950s he often watched the Scotia vessels in operation from the hill above the Point Tupper rail yard. During the same period he witnessed the construction of the Canso Causeway. With the opening of the causeway in 1955 the railway car ferries became redundant, ending a rail-marine service which operated for three generations. This book reflects a part of the author's youthful memories supplemented by research documentation and images.
