The purpose of this series of books (The Lakers) is to provide a pictorial representation of a unique maritime specimen: the Great Lakes 'boat'. The term 'ship' is a saltwater term that does not apply to the great inland sea.

Color photographs are used which means the boats are post-1945. There have been many changes to the Great Lakes fleets in the past decade (as of 1987) and this book will provide some historical perspective.

The contents are arranged by boat name and in the back of the book is data for the ships pictured including size, builder, years of operation, owner(s), etc. Not only the large iron ore carriers are shown but also tugs, ferries and excursion boats. The pictures are large format and provide excellent detail.
