Burlington Northern Adventures relates the personal experiences of the author, William J. Brotherton, who went railroading as a brakeman, conductor and trainmaster for the Burlington Northern Railroad system during the 1979-1982 period. Through his many interesting short stories, Brotherton illustrates what it was like to work for a major railroad company before branch lines, vintage diesel locomotives and cabooses were phased out. His accounts show what has changed within the railroad industry since then-and what has not. Brotherton, who grew up around trains in Georgia, takes the reader along on his personal encounter with a railroaders life in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota and Colorado.

Great Northern Lines East (Second Edition).
The Great Northern Railway was among Americas most distinctive and noteworthy railroads. Though its most spectacular scenery was in the western half of the line, called Lines West, there was a very busy network of trackage, and considerably more traffic, in the Lines East, essentially including the states of North and South Dakota, Minnesota, and extensions into Wisconsin, Iowa, and Manitoba.
This book presents the history, operational characteristics, and equipment which lay at the heart of GN Lines East, with an emphasis on the latter 40 years of Great Northern's history. Both passenger and freight operations were complex and interesting, as was the motive power. An extensive photographic presentation of steam and diesel locomotives, along with passenger and Freight and Passenger Equipment, is at the heart of this edition.
This book, the first edition of which was published in 1989, is a companion to Charles R. Wood's Great Northern Lines West. But this new edition contains far more than did the first edition. Photographic reproduction is greatly improved with better paper and printing. The text has been revised, corrected and expanded where needed, and the book is now 70 pages longer. Also, the book now contains an outstanding collection of 621 photographs (54 of them in color);
fully 231 of the photographs here are new or enlarged from the previous versions.
The most distinctive addition to the book is an entirely new chapter on Great Northern Freight and Passenger Equipment, by experts Richard H. Hendrickson and Staffan Ehnbom. Starting about 1910 and extending to 1970, coverage is included for all types of freight cars. This chapter alone contains 142 new photographs, along with a few from the previous edition. There is no comparable resource anywhere for detailed coverage of GN freight cars over this span of time.
Author Patrick Dorin has 15 previous railroad books to his credit, he welcomed the chance to improve and expand this one. Noted railroad artist J. Craig Thorpe has created a painting of the Stone Arch Bridge between Minneapolis and St. Paul to enhance the dust jacket. This new edition is a fitting companion to Great Northern Lines West and completes the detailed story of the Great Northern Railway.

This book offers a remarkable glimpse into the history of the Soo Line Railroad and its predecessors in Minnesota, the Dakotas and Montana. With twenty pages in color including railroad art by Larry Fisher and a dramatic front piece by Howard Fogg, this second edition of the first volume immerses the reader in the golden age of the Soo. It also offers insights into depot design, galleries of caboose and locomotives as well as a synoptic economic history of the Soo. Additional features include a look at the role of the Soo in the first and second world wars, the Soo's Social Life and Circus Time on the Old Soo.
Originally published in 1973, West From Shoreham examines the Soo Line Railroad in the Dakotas and Minnesota as an entity, chronicling its origins as a small dream that grew into a vast capillary network of freight transport and passenger rail. By the mid 1980s, it became apparent that the original edition was in very high demand, but unfortunately no additional copies of the book remained available for purchase. Realizing that there were many pieces of the Saga left untold, the author decided not only to reprint the text, but to increase the breadth of the text greatly, adding 40% more text and many new photographs. During that period of research it became clear that the Saga would likely require three volumes for completeness and as such he began to simultaneously research and plan the structure of Volume II: Three Generations West which was published in 1995.

The third and final volume in the series. Offers an account of the history of the Soo Line Railroad and its Chicago Division- The Wisconsin central Railroad- with emphasis on their relation to the Canadian Pacific Railway. This volume features descriptions of the Soo's lines in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan, complementing the material in Saga of the Soo Volume II (which covered the lines in Minnesota, the Dakotas and Montana).
The East referenced the title stands for the initial effort of the Soo's founders to develop the Minneapolis, Sault Ste. Marie and Atlantic Railway that reached east to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. There it connected with the great Canadian Pacific Railway at Sault Ste. Marie. East also Stands for the great contribution that the Wisconsin Central made to Soo Line's fortunes after it was leased by the Soo in 1909.
West stands for the Soo's westward trackage through Minnesota and the Dakotas, all the way to eastern Montana, where the railroad garnered wheat and other agricultural produce that fed the milling industries and other commerce in Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
North references the Soo's benefactor and present owner-the Canadian Pacific Railway, which has played a key role in the overall history of this valiant line.
