This book illustrates the narrow gauge freight trains operated by the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad between Alamosa, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico, during the years 1965 to 1968. The 92 miles of track connecting those two points were part of 293 miles of narrow and dual gauge railroad still then operated by the D&RGW, the remnant of what had once been an extensive narrow gauge railroad 'empire' in the Rocky Mountains.
The Alamosa-Chama segment, notable for its mountain scenery, included a dramatic crossing of 10,015-foot high Cumbres Pass. Includes maps and a roster of D&RGW narrow gauge equipment in 1968.

More than 25 years have passed since Jared Harper's pioneer work on Raton Pass was first published. This is a second edition of this important work, not only to bring it up to date, and to take advantage of recent trends in photo restoration and printing technology, but to expand on the original with the considerable amount of material that has come to light on the subject in the intervening years, especially on the coal mining industry that surrounded the pass from the beginning through the middle 1950s.
As the highest point on the vast Santa Fe Railway system, and possessing one of the steepest main line grades in the United States, Raton Pass attracted pioneer railroad photographers like Otto C. Perry, Richard Kindig, Jackson Thode, Les Logue, Clayton Tinkham, Joe Schick, and Preston George who documented the parade of trains over Raton Mountain in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Raton was also noted for operating many more passenger trains and streamliners than freight trains, as an easier grade, via Amarillo, Texas, and Belen, New Mexico, was used by the majority of freight trains. Triple headers of steam engines were not uncommon. Freights usually had three or four engines on each train, a double header on the front end, and one or two pushers at the rear.
Today the railroad is owned by the State of New Mexico and faces an uncertain future, but the history an operation of Santa Fe's line over Raton Mountain remains, and is indeed the stuff that legends are made of.

Silver City Narrow Gauge. New Mexico Two Footer: The Story of the 2' Gauge Silver City, Pinos Altos & Mogollon Railroad.
In 1905, after a number of years of low metal prices and little mining activity, things began to boom in the Silver City area of New Mexico. The Comanche Mining and Smelting Co. acquired the Silver City, Pinos Altos & Mogollon, a 'paper' railroad, to lower transportation costs for their mining operations. The decision was made to construct a narrow gauge railroad as there wasn't much traffic expected to be directly interchanged with the Santa Fe Railway.
In early 1905, the little narrow gauge line purchased two used Shay locomotives from the Gilpin Tramway located in Colorado for construction of the line. These two tiny Shays were too small for heavy ore trains and two larger Shays were ordered from Lima Locomotive and Machine Company.
Unfortunately as copper prices rose and then fell, the little narrow gauge railroad's business cycled with the mining activity. After only a few short years, Silver City's narrow gauge faded into oblivion. This book attempts to capture as much of this little line's history as possible.

Then follow the Golden State Route northeast from El Paso to Tucumcari, New Mexico and the connection with the Rock Island. There are very extensive captions along with more than 260 never before published color photographs. Featured is the last of Southern Pacific's steam locomotives and first and early second-generation diesel-electric locomotive operations. The time frame for this volume is the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s.
