Noted historical author Russell L. Crump explores the fueling, sanding, watering, and locomotive servicing facilities of the Santa Fe from its origins (GC&SF) to present day. Steam and diesel are both covered with extensive maps, diagrams, photographs and text. Lots of color photographs are used but b&w was necessary for the early days! Coupled with the quality, layout and editing you expect from Paired Rail Railroad Publications.

Maps show the location of facilities such as turntables, engine houses, shops, fuel oil and diesel fuel facilities.

The main line from Purcell, Oklahoma through Temple, Texas to Galveston, Texas. The secondary main line from P&SF Junction to Temple. Southern Pacific's Sacramento Shops: Incubator of Innovation.

The Sacramento General Shops were the core of Southern Pacific's system-wide shops. With a need to be self-reliant in the Far West, Sacramento long maintained the capability to build any and every piece of equipment needed on the railroad. This included nearly 200 locomotives, and a great many freight and passenger cars, along with many specialized pieces of equipment and, naturally, upgrades and rebuilds of almost anything on the railroad.
