Though the sub-title of this book implies coverage of the Illinois Central south of Cairo, Illinois, in fact the first 75 pages cover that region. Other chapters include photographs of the IC in floodwaters at Dubuque, Iowa plus additional coverage of IC cabooses and motive power. There are a number of steam locomotive photographs in this book, about 1/4 to 1/3 of the photographs are of steam. There are 6 pages in black & white of the Paducah shops and of the steam and diesel locomotives being rebuilt there.
Also included are two pages of photographs of the Cadiz Railroad which connected with the IC. The diesel photographs include passenger units and as many diesels painted in black as white and orange.
