1 Burlington Northern Through Passenger Service In Color Gregory Stout
Morning Sun Books 2008 1582482470 / 9781582482477 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Burlington Northern Through Passenger Service in Color. Featuring the Photography of George Strombeck.

George Strombeck is an inveterate train rider. Share his on-board as well as track side experiences on the Great Northern, Northern Pacific and Chicago, Burlington & Quincy (no SP&S).

As the Hill Lines merged into Burlington Northern, George was there to capture this brief moment in private American passenger train operation and followed it into early Amtrak.

The title of the book doesn't match very well what is inside. Most of the book is pictures of the trains of the predecessors of the Burlington Northern beginning in 1961. Instead of seeing mixed passenger train consists, the first 73 pages are of the trains before the BN merger. Matched equipment is the rule and not until much later in the book in the Amtrak section will the mixed consists appear. George Strombeck made a point of riding the obscure trains also. So scenes of the locals to Billings, Montana on the Burlington and The Dakotan on the Great Northern are presented.

2 Northern Pacific Classic Steam Era Lorenz P. Schrenk and Robert L. Frey
Hundman Publishing 1997 0945434278 / 9780945434276 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Northern Pacific Classic Steam Era.

This volume focuses on the Northern Pacific Railway from about 1905 to 1925, with primary emphasis on the locomotives purchased by the road during that era. The selection of the time period for this book corresponds roughly to the development of the modern steam locomotive. In many respects, the locomotives produced during this era of steam power, such as the powerful Mikados and the fleet Pacifics, represent archetypes of steam locomotives produced during the most influential period of America's railroads

This volume has been extensively researched by the authors using NP company files, living authorities, thousands of photographs and other primary and secondary resources.

3 Northern Pacific Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment Todd Sullivan
Morning Sun Books 1995 1878887491 / 9781878887498 NEW CONDITION BOOK

This book provides a view of the Northern Pacific Railways freight, passenger and non-revenue rolling stock during the era of color photography. The objective is less to be encyclopedic than to show the paint and lettering schemes used on NP equipment from the 1940s through 1970. In looking at the various schemes, we will also explore the Northern Pacifics fleet of equipment, when and why it was acquired, and where and how it was used.

5 Northern Pacific Diesel Era: 1945-1970 Robert L. Frey and Lorenz P. Schrenk
Golden West Books 1995 0870951025 / 9780870951022 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Northern Pacific Diesel Era: 1925-1945.

The Northern Pacific Railway entered the diesel era with a large fleet of modern steam locomotives, but gradually and then more rapidly, made the transition to diesel-electric motive power. Covering in detail, all of the NP's diesels: the first-generation switchers, the early road units, and the postwar road-switchers. The more powerful and technologically advanced second-generation units such as U25C, the U28C, the SD-45, and the U33C units are presented.

Of the many books Golden Spike stocks, I read this one from cover to cover. It is an excellent book not only for the Northern Pacific, but for what the railroad mechanical departments experienced in selecting models from the many-at the time-diesel builders. It was especially humorous to read about the 'new' Baldwin road switcher that as the paint wore away revealed factory demonstrator colors!

Four Ways West Publications 2000 1885614365 / 9781885614360 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Northern Pacific Pictorial Vol. 4: The First Northern Transcontinental becomes The Main Street of the Northwest.

This volume picks up the story of Northern Pacific's passenger train service, as efforts were made to regain passengers in the midst of innovations made by the competition that led it face-to-face with the Streamlined Era.

The four chapters present this story of Northern Pacific's passenger train service continuing with the early 1930s and carries it through 1951. Since Northern Pacific did not operate its passenger trains in isolation, descriptions of the Burlington Route, the Southern Pacific, and the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railways connecting passenger trains during this 1930-1951 period have been included. The competition, which was presented by the Great Northern, Milwaukee Road, and Union Pacifics transcontinental passenger trains, and which had to be faced by the Northern Pacific, has also been presented in each chapter of this volume.

Black & White photographs from the Steam Era, color photographs of equipment, schedules, consists, diagrams and other illustrations are included.

Northern Pacific Railway Supersteam Era: 1925-1945.

This book tells the fascinating story of the development and operation of the Northern Pacific's most powerful and advanced steam locomotives. Making extensive use of the corporate records of the railroad, as well as interviews with former Mechanical Department employees, the authors document the life of the Northern Pacific's trend-setting 4-8-4, 2-8-8-4 and 4-6-6-4 steam locomotives.

Several of the country's finest railroad photographers-Ronald Nixon, Warren McGee, Phil Hastings and Henry R. Griffiths, Jr., to name a few-contributed photographs for this book. Other illustrations came from private and public collections, including those of the Burlington Northern Railroad, Inc., the inheritor of Northern Pacific's legacy.

This is a book which will appeal to rail enthusiasts, railroad historians, students of locomotive technology and anyone whose pulse quickens at the sight and sound of a giant steam locomotive.

12 Northern Pacific ’s Mullan Pass Bill & Jan Taylor
Pictorial Histories 2002 1575100630 / 9781575100630 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Northern Pacific ’s Mullan Pass, on the “Montana Short Line ”.

In 1881 the Northern Pacific Railroad contracted with Muir Bros. to bore a 3,850-foot tunnel through the Rocky Mountains of Montana. Beginning late that year, the contractors struggled to complete the project in time for the Last Spike Ceremony scheduled for September of 1883. When the enormity of the job and a partial collapse of the tunnel threatened that date, a temporary overhead line was constructed and utilized until November 1883.

This book examines route selection, construction, and early operations over –and through –the continental divide. More than 100 photographs, maps and diagrams, timetables, track profile and accounts from newspapers, and trade journals document that portion of the NP main line from Helena to Garrison, Montana.

Read about territorial politics, construction hardships, inaugural runs, fire and rockfall in the tunnel, and runaway trains as well as those upgrades which made it possible for Burlington Northern and now Montana Rail Link to operate there today.

13 Railroad Shutterbug Jim Fredrickson
WSU Press 2000 0874221951 / 9780874221954 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Jim Frederickson's Northern Pacific.

Practically growing up with a camera in his hand, Jim Fredrickson of Tacoma, Washington, took his first picture of a steam locomotive in 1936. In a few years, railroad men were regularly seeing the kid with a camera alongside the tracks and in the rail yards. Then, one day in 1942, one of the men said You're always hanging around here, kid, you might as well go to work.

The chief dispatcher at Tacoma's Union Station hired the sixteen-year-old high school student to serve as a callboy, telephoning conductors, brakemen, engineers, and firemen an hour-and-a-half in advance of when they were scheduled for duty. Thus began Frederickson's thirty-nine year career with the Northern Pacific Railways telegraph and dispatching departments.

Fredrickson continued to take exceptional photographs--his many pictures depict the last great glories of the Steam Era as coal-fired locomotives were replaced by diesel engines in the 1940s and 1950s. His photographs and stories tell of the NPs men and women as well as the steam engines, depots, diners, cabooses, sidings, yards, shops, bridges and tunnels. This is a good railroad book and its rare to get this kind of insight and detail.

14 Rails to Gold and Silver Vol. 1 Bill and Jan Taylor
Pictorial Histories 1999 1575100649 / 9781575100647 NEW CONDITION BOOK

The Northern Pacific's Rails to Gold and Silver-Lines to Montana's Mining Camps Vol. I: 1883-1887.

In 1883 Henry Villard celebrated the completion of the Northern Pacific near Gold Creek, Montana Territory. Rails to Gold and Silver: Volume 1 covers Northern Pacific's construction in Montana between 1883 and 1887.

Henry Villard's financial collapse, the reorganization which followed and the restrictive language in its charter meant the NP was unwilling and unable to protect its markets by building to the developing gold, silver and copper camps such as Rimini, Marysville, and Butte. James J. Hill of the Great Northern recognized the error and began building into the territory. By 1886 the NP, aided by Helena banker Samuel T. Hauser, was in an all out war to protect potential mining traffic sources.

Rails to Gold and Silver: Volume I covers Northern Pacific ’s construction in Montana between 1883 and 1887 which resulted in the completion of seven branch lines. These were: Rocky Mountain Railroad (to Cinnabar & Gardiner);
Helena & Jefferson County Railroad (to Wickes);
Helena & Red Mountain Railroad (to Rimini);
Helena & Northern Railroad (to Marysville);
Helena, Boulder Valley & Butte Railroad (to Boulder & Calvin);
Drummond & Philipsburg Railroad (to Philipsburg & Rumsey);
Missoula & Bitter Root Valley Railroad (to Victor & Darby).

Construction documents as well as newspaper accounts of the day tell the stories of the construction and early operations through the words of those who lived them. Read about the war on Ten Mile Creek, a wild ride on Boulder Hill, wrecks, and express fraud in Hamilton.

Photos from the collections of the Montana Historical Society, the Granite County Historical Museum, the Bitterroot Historical Museum, the U of M archives, W.R. McGee, the Taylors and others flesh out the work. Charts, maps, timetables, profiles, and other sources are similarly included.

About 50-50 photographs and text.

Pictorial Histories 1999 1575101262 / 9781575101262 NEW CONDITION BOOK

The Northern Pacific's Rails To Gold and Silver-Lines to Montana's Mining Camps Volume II: 1888-1898.

In 1883 the Northern Pacific Railroad completed its main line through Montana. Its charter and the conservative nature of its management prevented the NP from building branch lines to developing gold, silver and copper mining camps such as Wallace, Cooke City, Elkhorn, Pony and Virginia City. James J. Hill of the Great Northern Railway recognized the NP's omission and began building a railroad into the territory. By 1886 the NP, aided by Helena banker Samuel T. Hauser, was in an all-out war with Hill and the Union Pacific to protect its mining traffic sources.

Rails to Gold and Silver: Volume II covers the Northern Pacific & Montana's construction between 1888 and 1898 which resulted in the completion of the following six railroads: the Rocky Fork & Cooke City, the Butte Short Line, the Red Bluff & Pony, the Elkhorn Extension to the Helena, Boulder Valley & Butte, the Gaylord & Ruby Valley, and the De Smet to Idaho Line (Wallace branch)

16 The Butte Short Line Bill and Jan Taylor
Pictorial Histories 1998 1575100401 / 9781575100401 Second Printing NEW CONDITION BOOK

Over Homestake Pass on The Butte Short Line: The Construction Era 1888-1929.

In the 1880s the Northern Pacific Railroad ’s management decided to bypass Butte, Montana, in favor of a main line through Helena 40 miles to the north. At that time the mining region around Helena appeared to be a more lucrative source of traffic and offered a lower crossing of the continental divide after the completion of the Mullan Tunnel. Within three years, however, that situation changed as Butte began its conversion to a copper center, becoming known as the “Richest Hill on Earth. ” In 1886 the NP began a decade-long struggle to find a satisfactory route into Butte –first from Garrison, then from Helena, and finally from Logan over Homestake Pass. The Butte Short Line is a history of that effort.

The book chronicles surveys, agreements, and conflicts with the Union Pacific concerning rights-of-way in Jefferson Canyon, the Utah & Northern and the Montana Union. It examines problems with Mullan Tunnel, the abortive Helena, Boulder Valley & Butte, and the competition provided by Hill ’s Montana Central. It discusses the role the Rocky Fork & Cooke City coal development played in the final route selection and the formation of the Northern Pacific & Montana. It examines political intrigue during the time of Montana statehood. It details construction of the road and early operations.

Construction documents as well as newspaper accounts of the day tell the stories of hold ups, wrecks, and election fraud through the words of those who lived them. Read about violence on the Jefferson River, a little known mile-long spur at Welch, the shooting of Frank Clow, and the wreck of #2. Over 120 photos from the collections of F.J. Haynes, the Jefferson County Historical Museum, R.V. Nixon, W.R. McGee, the Taylors, and others flesh out the work. Charts, maps, timetables, and other sources are similarly included.

Overall, the book is organized by locomotive type, with chapters on Mikados, Pacifics, and Northerns, as well as the mighty Yellowstones and Challengers. And there's a chapter devoted to the colorful and popular Yellowstone Park Line. Best of all, the composition skills of McGee and Nixon give the reader the added value of some wonderful locomotive settings, everything from passenger depots to mountain passes to rolling prairies. The accompanying captions provide detail that you simply won't find anywhere else. Each photo and caption pair truly sparks the imagination!

This book is of value both to the enthusiast and the researcher. An extensive index, organized by locomotive type, leaves no guesswork to the railfan or modeler trying to isolate a particular piece of motive equipment. Beyond steam, the last chapters of the book take a look at some of the NP's early diesel locomotives, an endearing sight to people who were kids in the 50s and 60s. A must have for all NP fans!
