This book presents the color photography Rich Pennisi, a former E-L employee, and others in 1970 and 1971. Color track diagrams of some Interlockings are included as are some timetable reproductions. Looking through this book makes one miss the colorful E-L.

Lost Railroad of Western New York Vol. 1: The Lehigh Valley at Buffalo.

This is the first in a planned series of books about now-vanished railroads of the western New York state region.

This area, centering around the city of Buffalo, greatly impacted the fortunes of the railroad known as the Lehigh Valley. Buffalo shared in the company's slow rise to success and its equally slow decline to oblivion. This first volume, with 118 b&w illustrations, details LV freight and passenger operations, facilities and motive power in the immediate area of Buffalo. It also provides a series of "before and after" photos comparing historic LV landmarks with scenes of the same locations today.

Mountain Railroads of New York Vol. 1: West Adirondacks

Where Did the Tracks Go in the Western Adirondacks

The primary intent of Mountain Railroads of New York State is to assist the reader in the location of railroad grades, primarily abandoned, in the field. For future historians, these four volumes date, as best as possible, the period of service of each line and major industry. Many references to further, more detailed, reading on the lines are provided, especially on topics which cannot be included here: forestry, geology, finances, biographies of railroad builders, political, and social aspects, etc.

A secondary intent for Mountain Railroads of New York State is to provide detailed itineraries for passengers riding on existing trains for a fuller, richer appreciation of historic sites and interpretation of natural sights along the right-of-way. Chapters 35, 36, 49, and 50 may be useful to passengers on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. Chapters 51 and 67 may be used as an itinerary for passengers on Amtrak ’s Adirondack, while Chapters 52 and 53 may be used as an itinerary for passengers riding the Upper Hudson River Railroad. In the Catskills, Chapters 80, 83, and 84 could benefit passengers riding the Catskill Mountain Railroad and the Delaware & Ulster Rail Ride.

A mass of information on the D&H main line has been accumulated since Where did the Tracks Go (1985) and Railroads of the Adirondacks: A History (1996) were published. Enough material is available now to warrant a new chapter.

A great deal of detail is available on the Main Line for several reasons. It is a main line with heavy traffic and many branches. It has been in service for many years: 160 into Whitehall and 133 through Westport, for example, as of this 2008 writing. Many changes have occurred during this long period. Many industries have risen, peaked, and declined. In addition, there has been a number of relocations creating a complex history: examples are the Port Henry tunnels, the Bulwagga Bay trestle, a shift from Mooers Junction to Rouses Point, and the junctions with both the Ausable and Chateaugay Branches.

Construction was complex, too: the line into the iron mines at Mineville did not initiate in Whitehall but in Leicester, Vermont. The Ausable line had been planned to be on the Main Line but became only a branch. The first railroad into Plattsburgh came not from Albany but from Montreal.

The segment from Whitehall to Rouses Point was chosen for inclusion in this atlas for two reasons. First, the railroad itself is organized into operational divisions, one of these being the Champlain Division from Whitehall (actually, from Lake Station, just north of Whitehall) to Rouses Point. Built northward from Albany, the line terminated near Whitehall for 25 years before being extended northward to Plattsburgh and Montreal. Second, inclusion of detail south of Whitehall and in Quebec would have made this volume unwieldy. This is a work on the Adirondacks, and the bulk of the trackage should be in the Adirondacks. The segment on the Main Line from Port Kent to Rouses Point is not geologically in the Adirondacks, but is so tied in with branches into the Adirondacks that it is included.

New Haven Railroad: The Final Decades

The New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad quietly vanished on January 1, 1969, when it was acquired by the 20,000 mile Penn Central. Always a compact operation, the New Haven ran 350 locomotives over 1,500 route-miles in four states during its last years.

No other smaller railroad had such variety in equipment. The New Haven simultaneously operated steam, electric and diesel-electric motive power. New Haven's final steam roster included ancient 2-6-0s, low-drivered 2-10-2s and high-speed streamlined 4-6-4s. The railroad's pioneering electrification offered train-watchers a full spectrum of motors in a multitude of wheel arrangements. New Haven's all-time roster of diesel-electric locomotives featured 558 units with 27 models from six builders. Colorful paint schemes and the sheer volume of traffic made the New Haven a railroad of note.
