This popular book from Evergreen Press features a unique Vermont short line that ran through the White River Valley between Bethel and Rochester from 1898 to 1933.

Throughout its history, the 19-mile White River Railroad faced adversity in many forms: poor location and construction, inadequate capitalization, hand-me-down equipment, heavy snows in winter and flooding most of the rest of the year.

In addition to providing the Valley with invaluable passenger service, freight customers included talc mines and mills, lumbering operations, granite quarries, tanneries, and merchandising businesses of all types. Dedicated employees and beautiful scenery were among its assets.

Scenes Along The Rails: The Rutland Railroad, Rutland to Bellows Falls.

The Rutland & Burlington Railroad completed its mainline from Burlington to Rutland and Bellows Falls, Vermont in December 1849, connecting Boston with the Connecticut River and Lake Champlain thereby opening the Great Lakes and the burgeoning western markets to New England commerce.

Thus began the fabled and much-loved Rutland Railroad. This 128-page laminated hardcover takes the reader back to the pre-1925 era when steam was king. Local mills produced typical Vermont goods: woolens, textiles, limestone, talc, soapstone, marble, milk, lumber, wood products, leather goods, and paper. Vermont Rail System: A Railroad Renaissance.

More than forty years ago, the State of Vermont and Jay Wulfson ’s Vermont Railway joined forces to buy and revitalize key components of the moribund Rutland Railroad.
