America's Pioneer Mallet: Old Maud-A Life & Times

In 1904 a dramatic, new locomotive was built at the Schenectady Works of the American Locomotive Company for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. It immediately went to the World ’s Fair in St. Louis, where it became an instant star as the World ’s Largest Locomotive.

In the varied and interesting history of American motive power, few stories are as gripping as Old Maud ’s, North America ’s first Mallet locomotive. Once one of the most celebrated locomotives ever built, to many turn of the century Americans it was a household word. The B&O ’s No. 2400 was talked about and written about perhaps more than any locomotive before or since.

Old Maud, as a technological innovation, became a subject of intense rivalry between two giants of American industry –ALCo and the Baldwin Locomotive Works. This book contains not only the biography of Old Maud, but also the socio-economic environment of the turn of the century that promoted the locomotive ’s fame and its affectionate nickname. Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (2008 reprint with all new photographs).

This book is a presentation of b&w photographs of B&O steam locomotives taken in their last, greatest, and best remembered era of their use. Included are both action and portrait photographs. This book does not attempt to be comprehensive in the treatment of any B&O locomotive class, nor to present technical data. It is intended as a photo album of steam photographs. Reproductions of official B&O locomotive specification drawings have been included. Taken from a 1954 diagram book, they represent the last refinement on each locomotive. This book is about Baltimore & Ohio's Cincinnatian, one of scores of new trains inaugurated by many railroads in the decade after World War Two when passenger train travel was booming. It was an all coach train consisting of only five cars, powered by a streamlined Pacific type (4-6-2) steam locomotive. This one small, but highly advertised train served somewhat as an emblem of the enthusiasm on the part of many railroads with high hopes that passenger business could be retained by the railroads in the face of highway and airline competition.
