Boston, Revere Beach & Lynn Railroad Robert A. Liljestrand and David R. Sweetland

The Boston, Revere Beach and Lynn Railroad was the largest single factor in the development and growth of Revere, states George Clarke, in The Story of Revere Beach. Popularly known as The Narrow Gauge, that operated from Lynn to East Boston. Prior to 1896, its road bed followed a path that traced the crescent shape of the coastline. The train operated along Railroad Avenue, which today is named Revere Beach Boulevard, then it was removed and relocated four hundred yards to the west. The MBTA currently runs its Blueline along the same roadbed.
In its heyday passengers would patronize the train from stations all along the resort area. The Point of Pines, Oak Island, Revere Street and Bathhouse were just a few. Old timers can still remember their anticipation of a day at the beach, beginning with the sooty smell of soft coal burning as it energized the little engines that carried the Narrow Gauge to its destination. During World War II a number of men from Revere were stationed on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. To their surprise, the coaches of the railroad taking them to their barracks and around the island, were from none other than the Old Narrow Gauge. These cars were sold and shipped thousands of miles from Revere to the Hawaiian Island for duty during the War.
The BRB&L was electrified in 1928 and of the 96 passenger cars on the roster, 60 would be modified into multiple unit (MU) cars. Unfortunately the electric operations did not stop the lines financial troubles and in 1937 the company petitioned bankruptcy. Unfortunately operations by the Boston, Revere Beach and Lynn ended in 1940.

Equipment of the Delaware & Hudson Vol. 2: Steam Locomotives.
The focus of this book is on the steam locomotive classes of the Delaware & Hudson that were in common operation during the late 1930s and 1940s. During this time, the D&H went from a coal hauler to a bridge carrier where train speeds were important for connections with other railroads. By 1950, 233 steam locomotives remained on the roster, 182 in freight service, twenty-six in passenger service and twenty-five in switching operations. By 1953, diesel switchers and Road-Switchers had replaced all active steam power.
Under Joseph H. Nuelle, ninth president of the D&H, motive power requirements changed. Nuelle ordered from ALCo twenty Challenger 4-6-6-4 locomotives for the bridge traffic. Numbered 1500-1519, they were quickly followed by fifteen, #1520-1534, more in 1942 (page 41). Under the Nuelle administration, the D&H also ordered fifteen modern dual service 4-8-4s for delivery in 1943 (page 10). These 4-8-4s operated between Oneonta and Rouses Point in either freight or passenger service. Rounding out the modern steam locomotive fleet for the D&H were five more 4-6-6-4s, #1535-1539, delivered in 1946 (page 44).
This book does not cover all classes of D&H steam power, but is a sampling of the various classes. From 0-6-0 switchers to the 4-6-6-4s 18 classes and sub-classes of D&H steam power is presented.
