A Look Back at the Illinois Central DVD

And Other Midwestern Railroads.
The entire program was shot on 8mm film by Gordon Sandstrom between 1959 and 1975.
We begin with a brief look at the final days of steam in the Illinois Central then move around the system to locations including Markham, Kensington, Riverdale, Springfield, Homewood, Flossmoor, Woodcrest, Freeport, Stony Island Avenue and more. Run-bys of freight and passenger trains powered by a variety of diesel and electric power (including The Panama Limited, The Magnolia Star, The City of New Orleans, The James Whitcomb Riley, Land-O-Corn, The Green Diamond and The Indianapolis Special are seen).
The balance of the program was shot at State Line Tower, Joliet Union Station and the Open House at EMD in La Grange featuring trains of the Erie-Lackawanna, Monon, Wabash, C&O, Nickel Plate, Rock Island, Santa Fe, GM&O, CSS&SB, PRR and the Milwaukee Road.

Part two is the B&O produced movie (circa 1946) Meeting the Challenge describing the entire railroad operation and featuring many steam, diesel, freight and passenger train shots.
Part three gives the viewer a look at the former B&O (now CSX) as it looks today.
