There never lived an ALCo Diesel that liked to stay tuned up, so goes the old saying. The RS-series, with its husky 244 or 251 engine idling, makes sounds befitting a fire-breathing dragon. Great Northern Pictorial Vol. 7: Faster Schedules, Great for Freight.

The most obvious change that occurred on Great Northern during the late 1960s was corporate adoption of Big Sky Blue (blue with black and white trim and lettering). More importantly Great Northern was able to halt the declining trend begun in 1955, when overall freight traffic due to economic recession and increased competition within the railroad industry and by other transportation modes, during the Sky Blue period between 1966 and 1970.

The five major categories of tonnage were building materials, frozen and packaged foods, grain, manufactured products, and Taconite. Although Great Northern's merger into Burlington Northern was on the horizon, The Railway continued to improve its main line with several major realignment and relocation projects, laying of Continuous Welded-Rail, and CTC (Centralized Traffic Control). This volume completes the story of Great Northern freight service and it presents the early years of Burlington Northern freight service.
