Burlington Northern Santa Fe 1994 Motive Power Annual Robert C. DelGrosso
Four Ways West Publications 1995 NA NEW CONDITION BOOK
Burlington Northern Santa Fe 1994 Annual.
The year 1994 was a very good one for the Burlington Northern Railroad. Dramatic increases of Intermodal traffic and record tonnage of low sulfur western coal out of Wyoming's Powder River Basin plus the order of the EMD SD70 MAC locomotives were the good news. The Union Pacific fought the BN for the right to merge with the Santa Fe and lost.
Chapters include a 1994 BN roster, the pending (at the time) BNI-SFP merger, BN's snow removal equipment, the first decade of the BN, a sampler of freight and passenger cars, a BN color review (16 pages), and the assignment of BN locomotives as of Dec. 31, 1994.
Other features:
Mileposts-1994 = Coal, Intermodal, Grain, and more;
A sampler of new coal hoppers, and rebuilt official cars;
The proposed merger of two western rail goliaths;
Proposed system map;
Complete Santa Fe and BN locomotive rosters at Merger Date;
BN's First Decade;
BN's Snow Removal Equipment, photos, diagrams, and roster;
Complete BN Locomotive Roster going into the BNSF Merger.
Four Ways West Publications, laminated hard cover, 160 pages, 8.5 x 11 x .5 in., b&w and color photographs (16 page color section); locomotive roster; snow removal equipment roster and diagrams. FWW100

Dragon Steel: The ALCo Action Album Andy Romano
Four Ways West Publications 2000 188561439X / 9781885614391 NEW CONDITION BOOK
There never lived an ALCo Diesel that liked to stay tuned up, so goes the old saying. The RS-series, with its husky 244 or 251 engine idling, makes sounds befitting a fire-breathing dragon. Notched-out, it rattles and thumps, exuding dark, oily smoke as turbo blades try to catch up with combustion chambers. Slithering through the early morning California smog, or hauling ore through the echoing rock of Utah, the sound is reminiscent of some supernatural creature.
While the photographs in this volume are grouped by the familiar marketing names of the various model lines designed and built over the years, the author has made no attempt to cover every railroad which ever owned an ALCo-though you will find most models. Over 200 color photographs, covering virtually every ALCo model, including more than 90 railroads.
Contents:
Ch. 1: Dragons, pp. 5-10;
Ch. 2: Early RS Series, pp. 11-46;
Ch. 3: Notched-Noses, pp. 47-64;

EMD's Classic Cowl Units: A Color Pictorial Sean Graham White
Four Ways West Publications 2002 1885614535 / 9781885614537 NEW CONDITION BOOK
EMD's Classic Cowl Units: A Color Pictorial.
With its request for a cowl locomotive to replace aging streamlined passenger units, Santa Fe Railway resurrected streamlined locomotive designs from General Motors Electro-Motive Division by requesting a new design which would better match the railroads streamlined passenger equipment. That design was the FP45. The design was successful enough to result in several permutations and additional sales to other railroads. A freight version was also built, the F45. Specialty cowls also included the SDP40F and F40C. These four models are considered the 'classic cowls'. A chapter on each owner of these cowls are presented plus appendices of locomotive specifications and diagrams and a cowl unit roster.

Great Northern Pictorial Vol. 7: Faster Schedules-Great for Freight John F. Strauss, Jr.
Four Ways West Publications 2003 1885614586 / 9781885614582 NEW CONDITION BOOK
Great Northern Pictorial Vol. 7: Faster Schedules, Great for Freight.
The most obvious change that occurred on Great Northern during the late 1960s was corporate adoption of Big Sky Blue (blue with black and white trim and lettering). More importantly Great Northern was able to halt the declining trend begun in 1955, when overall freight traffic due to economic recession and increased competition within the railroad industry and by other transportation modes, during the Sky Blue period between 1966 and 1970.
The five major categories of tonnage were building materials, frozen and packaged foods, grain, manufactured products, and Taconite. Although Great Northern's merger into Burlington Northern was on the horizon, The Railway continued to improve its main line with several major realignment and relocation projects, laying of Continuous Welded-Rail, and CTC (Centralized Traffic Control). This volume completes the story of Great Northern freight service and it presents the early years of Burlington Northern freight service.
