3 Above 3751 to San Diego DVD
Pentrex 2008 1563422476 / 9781563422478 NEW CONDITION DVD

On June 1, 2008, AT&SF 3751 made its first trip from Los Angeles to San Diego in 55 years and Pentrex was on the spot with multiple camera crews using the latest in high-tech equipment to bring you the best possible coverage of this exciting event. Using our famous aerial photography as well as trackside and onboard cameras, we were able to capture the train from all angles —and we do mean all! We were able to get some truly incredible shots! The powerful 4-8-4 Northern never looked better as she headed south along the beautiful Southern California coast.

The skies were clear and sunny as the 3751 departed Los Angeles at the head of its 10-car train. The Amtrak unit behind the 3751 was placed in reverse mode for the turn-around in San Diego and to provide head end power for the cars. Otherwise, the special was pulled entirely by steam. Our camera crews had the train well covered as it followed the west side of the Los Angeles River, past Amtrak ’s Redondo Yard, and headed east to Fullerton and then to San Juan Capistrano. A photo run-by for passengers took place at the Poinsettia Station where the thirsty Baldwin stopped to be watered and serviced before proceeding to San Diego. Leaving the shores of the Pacific Ocean, the oil-burning 81-year old steamer filled the canyons with a throaty exhaust as it tackled the 2.2 percent grades of Miramar Hill. In a scene reminiscent of the glory days of steam, the 3751 pulled into San Diego ’s classic Mission Revival style station where fans of all ages were waiting to greet the train.

Our special coverage of this historic excursion also includes some rare in-cab footage of the 3751. There ’s nothing quite so thrilling as the sights and sounds of big steam on the rails again and Pentrex has captured all that excitement for you in Above 3751 to San Diego!

DVD Special Feature: Chapter Menus provides instant access to program segments. Shot in High Definition and Widescreen (16x9) Format. No region code; can be played in NTSC DVD players worldwide. Packaged in Sturdy Vinyl Clamshell Case.

5 Across Marias Pass DVD
Pentrex 1991 1563422395 / 9781563422393 NEW CONDITION DVD

Stretched against the sunning backdrop of Glacier National Park, Burlington Northern ’s transcontinental mainline climbs up and over the rugged Rocky Mountains. One scenic splendor after another unfolds as long freight trains struggle up the mountain pass. It ’s the pre-merger days of the early 1990s and Pentrex is trackside to record the battle of trains and nature. The grandeur of the mountains is almost overwhelming as we explore the line from Whitefish, Montana to points east of Browning.

You ’ll see trains snake their way through the tunnels and along the banks of the wild middle fork of the Flathead River. Train after train rumbles through forests of aspen and larch decked out in glorious fall colors or struggles against winter ’s storms. After crossing over the high bridges and through the famous snow sheds, the trains work hard up the pass to crest the summit.

Marias Pass takes on a different look on the east slope. Wild, desolate country with ever-present mountains marks the high plateau. You ’ll see trains cross over Two Medicine Bridge and struggle upgrade through Grizzley. The solitude of Spotted Robe is broken as you watch a heavy grain train grind its way up the grade.

Burlington Northern and Mother Natures combine to make this stretch of railroad a place to be visited time and time again. No matter how often you ’ve been here before, you won ’t want to miss this vision of magnificent Marias Pass.

6 Alaska Railroad Vol. 1 DVD
Mind's I Productions 1993 156342214X / 9781563422140 NEW CONDITION DVD

Steel Rails, Midnight Sun plus Summer on the Alaska Railroad.

Stretching from Seward to Fairbanks, rising from tidewater up 2,360 feet to the Continental Divide, and running nonstop during sunless days and perpetual twilight, the Alaska Railroad is a hard-working operation that serves a land of extreme weather and incredible beauty. In the mid-1990s, filmmaker Patrick Hunstiger captured the fascination of the Alaska Railroad in a 3-part series of VHS videos and now Pentrex is proud to bring these programs to you on DVD, beginning with Volume 1: Steel Rails, Midnight Sun - Summer on the Alaska Railroad.

In 1993, the Alaska Railroad could field up to 17 trains covering up to 3,300 train miles in any given 24-hour period. These included two passenger extras; overnight freights and freight expresses; oil tanker, unit coal, and rock trains; work extras; and others. The ARR ’s all-GM locomotive fleet, which sported three different color schemes, was made up of GP40-2s, GP49s, GP38-2s, GP35s, GP7s, and MP15s. Cabooses could still be seen at the ends of some trains.

You ’ll get plenty of opportunity to enjoy these trains at work! After a brief look at a derailment earlier that spring, you ’ll follow the operations of the line starting at 7 AM on a busy June day and carry on into the evening, ending with a meet illuminated by the midnight sun at 1 AM. The trains are dispatched from Anchorage under Track Warrant Control and you ’ll view the dispatcher ’s display boards to see siding and train status in between catching the action at Eklunta, Matanuska, Talkeetna, Broad Pass, Healy, Clear Site, Nenana, and other locations. Highlights include a unit coal train pulled by 6 matched GP49s, a passenger extra at Denali Park, action on the tall trestle spanning Hurricane Gulch, and of course the incredible skylines of craggy, snow-capped mountains reaching up from floors of emerald green forests!

7 Alaska Railroad Vol. 2 DVD
Pentrex 2007 1563422239 / 9781563422232 NEW CONDITION DVD

Where Trains Fly and Eagles Soar. The Seward and Whittier Subdivisions on the Alaska Railroad.

The Alaska Railroad series continues with a fascinating look at operations on the Seward and Whittier Subdivisions during the summer of 1994. We ’ll treat you to a 3-day tour of the lines between Anchorage, Whittier and Seward, trackage that runs past the incredibly scenic vistas of Turn again Arm and Kenai Fjords National Park. The route from Seward to Portage takes the trains over the crest of Kenai at 1,060 feet, up 3 percent grades, and through 5 tunnels!

Traffic on the Whittier and Seward Subs consists of Anchorage-to-Seward passenger trains; the Whittier Shuttle carrying passengers, cars, and trucks; unit coal trains; and freights that serve the rail barges. These are led by GM diesels including GP35s and GP38s, GP40s and GP49s, plus a few surprises such as an F7-B and a Budd RDC. You ’ll also see many cabooses at the ends of these trains.

The highlights of our show feature the Port of Whittier where the Trainmaster juggles 10 trains and 2 rail barges against 20-foot tides with only one GP30 switch engine, a passenger train made up of former SP bi-level coaches, rides through the tunnels aboard the Shuttle, a 6-unit lash-up of 5 GP49s and one GP40 leading a heavy coal train, maintenance-of-way equipment, and a special military move. But not to be overlooked is the astonishing beauty of red sunsets, towering snow-draped mountains, and sea green glaciers that are backdrops to the silhouettes of these trains. The Alaska Railroad serves a land of incredible beauty, a place where trains fly and eagles soar!

8 Alaska Railroad Vol. 3 DVD

Giants in the Dark-Winter on the Alaska Railroad.

The third in Pentrex's 3-volume DVD series about the Alaska Railroad brings you a view of Alaskan railroading like no other, for it carries you along the rails in the dead of winter, when temperatures are minus 30 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit and you ’re lucky if you see five hours of daylight. Photographer Patrick Hunstiger set up his studio lights and cameras to capture this incredible action in 1994. Now, with this new DVD release from Pentrex, you can experience powerful diesels challenging the cold, snow, and darkness, guiding freight and passenger trains through the frozen frontiers of the Alaskan wilds.

Winter alters the way the Alaska Railroad does business. A busy summer week of up to 100 trains a week will drop to 25 during the winter. However, the spectacular drama of railroading in Alaska is undiminished. GP40-2s, GP49s, a GP30, F7-B, E8-B, and MP15 are seen spewing show from the rails, sliding through the darkness while snow flurries cover the cabs, and hauling their trains past ice clogged-bays and jagged white peaks. Approaching the Alyeska Ski Resort in Girdwood aboard the Ski Train is a magical sight for the mountain is lit for night skiing, but for the most part what you ’ll see is the bitter cold, the heavy storms, and the dangers facing the men and equipment in a land of perpetual darkness. It ’s an extraordinary insight into a type of railroading that few dare to face.

10 Along the Pocahontas District DVD
Pentrex 1996 1563422204 / 9781563422201 NEW CONDITION DVD

Coal Trains & Time Freights.

Travel back in time to southern West Virginia, deep in the heart of Appalachia, to experience the busy double tracked stretch of Norfolk Southern mainline called the Pocahontas District. It ’s the mid 1990s and you ’re touring the “Pokey ” from Williamson to Bluefield to watch heavy coal trains labor upgrade and speeding time-freights rush across the system.

The rugged terrain of this mountainous district has always been a challenge to the railroad. Numerous bridges carrying the tracks back and forth across the rivers are interspersed with eighteen tunnels that bore through the ridges along this line. The area ’s steep grades bring most trains down to a crawl and helper engines are required on almost all eastbound trains. The long climb up to Elkhorn Tunnel is a steady 1.4 percent grade.

Coal is king in these parts. You ’ll visit a coal mine where strings of hoppers are being topped off with this important commodity. Mine runs with cabooses are seen, as well as fleets of heavy mainline coal drags pulled by NS ’s newest locomotives. The Pokey is a railroading adventure where the scenery is spectacular and the obstacles are met with brute horsepower and ingenuity!

Yet manned block towers dating back to the turn of the century can still be found in use on the line. Experience over 150 Amtrak and commuter trains in action as you visit Penn Station, Hudson Tower, Newark, Trenton, Princeton Junction, and Zoo Interlocking and the venerable A and Zoo towers on your trek from New York City to Philadelphia. (80 minutes)

Philadelphia to Washington, D.C.

Exploring the electrified south end of the system, our cameras capture over 100 commuter and Amtrak trains between Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. You'll see the action at Eddystone, Pennsylvania; Wilmington, Delaware; Perryville, Havre de Grace, Aberdeen, and Baltimore, Maryland; and the D.C. area. You'll also go on a private tour of the CETC control center in Amtrak's 30th Street station and visit Washington Union Station's K tower. Arkansas & Missouri: Alcos in the Ozarks

The last diesel locomotive rolled off the ALCO assembly line in 1969 but the hills of northwest Arkansas still echoed those distinctive ALCO sounds in 1988, when Pentrex set out to bring you an up close and personal look at the people, places, and equipment of the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad.

Running along a 139-mile corridor from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Monett, Missouri, the A&M is a longtime favorite of railfans as its fleet is comprised entirely of ALCO locomotives. Here ’s your opportunity to see Century 420s climbing the steep slopes of the Boston Mountains, the highest mountain grade between the Appalachians and the Rockies. You ’ll thrill to those unmistakable throaty sounds of an Alco throttle yanked into “Run Eight. ” You ’ll also ride in the cab of a smoking T-6 as it switches cars on a branch line and visit the shops in Springdale where the locomotives are serviced and kept running strong. A highlight of your adventures is a ride aboard RS-1 #22 as it pulls a passenger train just for us. This entertaining tour of the Arkansas & Missouri is a “must-have ” addition to your railroad DVD collection!

17 At the Throttle Cab Ride Vol. 1 DVD
Pentrex 2008 1563422506 / 9781563422508 NEW CONDITION DVD

At the Throttle Cab Ride Vol. 1 (DVD). The San Bernardino Subdivision —Los Angeles to San Bernardino on the BNSF.

With the camera secured to the front of an eastbound stack train and the scenic landscapes of the BNSF San Bernardino Subdivision stretching before you, you ’re “at the throttle ” and about to experience a train ride like no other! In this show, you ’ll get a truly unique, railroader ’s perspective of the 65 miles between Hobart Yard in Los Angeles and the city of San Bernardino. This line supports Amtrak, Metrolink, and heavy BNSF freight action, and you ’ll see plenty of this as you ride the rails.

Beginning with an early departure on a beautiful spring day in 2008, you ’ll leave Hobart Yard, cautiously observing the 10-mile per hour speed limit until the entire train is on the mainline and the engineer can bring the heavy train up to speed. Running southeast past Pico Rivera, Los Nietos Junction, and La Mirada to Fullerton, you ’ll get to observe the routing procedures that support the Amtrak Pacific Surfliners, westbound freights, and Metrolink commuter trains that compete for track space. Moving east past the Fullerton Station, you ’ll slip past one of three remaining Santa Fe cantilever signals and head toward the horseshoe bend in Santa Ana Canyon. At West Riverside, UP joins the BNSF rails for the trip over Cajon Pass. By the time you reach the San Bernardino Station, enough daylight remains to give you a start onto the Cajon Sub to Devore. This has been no conventional cab ride; this has been an unobstructed view of the line that few people will ever experience! Welcome to Volume 1 of “At the Throttle! ”

At the Throttle Cab Ride Vol. 2 (DVD). The Cajon Subdivision —Devore to Barstow on the BNSF.

Climb aboard as we take an exciting 70-mile trip over BNSF ’s Cajon Subdivision from Devore to Barstow. You ’ll have the best seat in the house! We ’ve placed our camera at the very front of the lead unit on BNSF ’s hottest Z train. The four GE Dash 9 44CWs on our train provide 17,600 horsepower for the battle to the summit of Cajon Pass!

We ’ll depart Devore and then just east of Keenbrook we ’ll cross over onto the original line to Summit, which is preferred for most westbound traffic. It ’s shorter and steeper but our train has enough horsepower to conquer the 3 percent grade. Once past Summit, our train eases downgrade, clears the Upper Narrows and the scenic Lower Narrows, then makes good time streaking across the desert floor to Barstow. Along the way you ’ll meet westbound hotshots, spot third main track construction and signal installations, and get a totally unique perspective of the famous hotspots that make Cajon such a popular railfanning destination. Welcome aboard Volume 2 —you ’re “At the Throttle! ”.

At the Throttle Cab Ride Vol. 3 (DVD): Train Meets

Welcome to Pentrex's Volume 3 of At the Throttle. With our camera mounted on the lead engine of a BNSF train, we ’ll take to the rails to bring you a spectacular and unique perspective of railroading like no other! Volume 3 is dedicated to train meets, the exciting encounter of two opposing trains traveling on parallel tracks. You ’ll travel throughout Southern California to experience meets with freight, commuter, and passenger trains at a variety of locations, including the Alameda Corridor and the BNSF ’s San Bernardino and Cajon Subdivisions.

This is no conventional cab ride. As you travel the rails, you ’ll view meets from many intriguing angles. Our camera is sometimes mounted at the wheel, on the coupler, at the front of the cab, even on top of the engine! These images were not only shot during daylight; there are many fascinating night scenes as well. You ’ll see meets with Union Pacific, KCS, BNSF trains and Amtrak ’s Southwest Chief and Pacific Surfliner, plus a drag race on the climb to Summit. There ’s a good mix of motive power to savor, such as AC 4400 CWs, Dash 944 CS, GEVOs, and Amtrak ’s P42 DCs. The main thrill, however, is the feeling of being right there, just above the rails, with the ground shaking and the wind whipping as another long train slips past you. Enjoy the adventure-you ’re At the Throttle!

At the Throttle Cab Ride Vol. 4 (DVD): The Alameda Corridor.

Hop on board! We ’ve got a first class ticket for you to ride a BNSF doublestack train on the Alameda Corridor! From Hobart Yard in Los Angeles to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and back again, including Terminal Island and Pier 400, you ’re about to witness a line that few are privileged to see. So get ready. You ’re about to experience the Alameda Corridor!

The congestion generated by heavy BNSF and UP trains moving freight in and out of the ports led to construction of a 20-mile long consolidated route linking the railroads ’ container facilities near Los Angeles to the harbor area. The central feature of the Corridor is the Trench, a 33-foot deep, 50-foot wide, 10-mile long cut that carries trains below grade crossings. With an average close to 70 trains a day, the Corridor is a busy place, as you ’ll see on three separate outings.

Your first trip begins near Eastern Avenue on a cool, overcast October morning in 2007. After passing Hobart Tower, you enter the Trench at 25th Street, return to ground level 10 miles later in Compton, ending your trip at Delores Yard. Your second trip takes you from Watson Yard to Terminal Island where your consist will traverse a giant balloon track to keep your lead unit on the point before coupling to a waiting train. For the third trip, you ’ll depart from Pier 400 for the return trip back through the Trench. This time the camera is mounted on the second unit to give you a different perspective. The highlights of your trips include appearances by Pacific Harbor Line locomotives, a passing UP stack train in the corridor, and more. This is a railroading adventure like no other!
