1 At the Throttle Cab Ride Vol. 4 DVD
Pentrex 2009 1563422565 / 9781563422560 NEW CONDITION DVD

At the Throttle Cab Ride Vol. 4 (DVD): The Alameda Corridor.

Hop on board! We ’ve got a first class ticket for you to ride a BNSF doublestack train on the Alameda Corridor! From Hobart Yard in Los Angeles to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and back again, including Terminal Island and Pier 400, you ’re about to witness a line that few are privileged to see. So get ready. You ’re about to experience the Alameda Corridor!

The congestion generated by heavy BNSF and UP trains moving freight in and out of the ports led to construction of a 20-mile long consolidated route linking the railroads ’ container facilities near Los Angeles to the harbor area. The central feature of the Corridor is the Trench, a 33-foot deep, 50-foot wide, 10-mile long cut that carries trains below grade crossings. With an average close to 70 trains a day, the Corridor is a busy place, as you ’ll see on three separate outings.

Your first trip begins near Eastern Avenue on a cool, overcast October morning in 2007. After passing Hobart Tower, you enter the Trench at 25th Street, return to ground level 10 miles later in Compton, ending your trip at Delores Yard. Your second trip takes you from Watson Yard to Terminal Island where your consist will traverse a giant balloon track to keep your lead unit on the point before coupling to a waiting train. For the third trip, you ’ll depart from Pier 400 for the return trip back through the Trench. This time the camera is mounted on the second unit to give you a different perspective. The highlights of your trips include appearances by Pacific Harbor Line locomotives, a passing UP stack train in the corridor, and more. This is a railroading adventure like no other!

Pentrex 1991 1563422832 / 9781563422836 NEW CONDITION DVD

In 1991, Pentrex traveled across the country to capture the highlights of the year ’s railroading events. The result is two hours of nonstop adventure featuring 8 different railroading subjects, many of which are now fallen flags. Steam and diesel mainline railroading fills the screen in this edition of the Pentrex “Best of ” series!

Included are:

SP Beet Train: Watch as SP ’s famous wooden gondolas are filled to the brim. Then follow two SP GP9s and a Cotton Belt GP40-2 as they haul the gondolas from Los Banos toward Fresno en route to the refinery.

SP Sacramento Shops: Wheel repairs, traction motor rebuilds, and heavy locomotive repairs were still taking place at the Sacramento shops in 1991. We ’ll take you through the facilities to see the work in progress.

Berea Tower: This busy Conrail junction near Cleveland, Ohio, saw a nonstop parade of trains in the fall of 1991. The interesting mix of power includes SD40s, SD40-2, GP40, GP38-2, 6-axle GE locomotives, and more.

Union Pacific Challenger 3985: Pentrex's coverage of a special excursion from Salt Lake City/Ogden to McCanon, Idaho includes a cab ride as well as trackside views. No diesel helpers were included on this trip; it ’s all steam!

Santa Fe Shippers Special: Five Santa Fe business cars pulled by GE Warbonnet units made a special run from Fresno to Richmond. Highlights include fast running, a classic SF Depot, and Glen Fraser Tunnel.

Southern Pacific 2472. Join 2472 on her maiden excursion, running from San Francisco to San Jose and return. This was her second outing after 13 years of restoration efforts and the results were a flawless performance!

Railroads of Salt Lake City and Ogden: UP, SP, Rio Grande, and the Utah Railway keep the joint double track mainline at Grant Tower humming with activity. It ’s not uncommon to see 3-4 trains there at the same time!

Union Pacific Desert Victory Unit 3593: Follow UP ’s SD40-2 #3593, painted in camouflage colors and displaying the names of UP employees serving in Operation Desert Storm, as it leads a train from SLC to Yermo.

4 Big Boy Combo Part 1 DVD
Pentrex 2005 1563421526 / 9781563421525 NEW CONDITION DVD

Measuring 132 feet long and weighing one and a quarter million pounds, the Union Pacific Big Boys were the largest, heaviest, most powerful steam locomotives of their type. These giants could pull a five and a half mile long train on level track. Although only 25 Big Boys were ever built, over 18 years those few engines ran up nearly 26 million miles hauling billions of tons of freight. In Pentrex ’s Big Boy Combo Part 1, you ’ll see two fantastic shows presenting the Big Boys in all their glory!

Last of the Giants (23 Minutes)

Union Pacific paid tribute to its Big Boys in a publicity film that has become a sought-out collector ’s item for rail enthusiasts worldwide. You ’ll see the evolution of UP steam power from 4-6-0s to the development of the articulated locomotive. Then you ’ll meet the Big Boys and watch as they are serviced, rebuilt, and run. Trackside and cab shots feature these mighty 4-8-8-4s pulling long freights over Wyoming ’s Sherman Hill during their last years in service. This classic film is one you ’ll enjoy watching again and again.

Last of the Giants Volume 2: The Cheyenne Shops (1 Hour)

Cheyenne was a bustling hub for UP steam in the 1950s. It ’s where the Big Boys were based during their last years of operation powering freights over Sherman Hill to Laramie. In Volume 2, you ’ll go on a tour of the coal chute and servicing areas, take a spin on the turntable that served the 48-stall roundhouse, and visit the backshop where the Big Boys were rebuilt. You ’ll hear the stories of the men who once worked on these famous locomotives and will learn about the operational layout and design of the Cheyenne yards as they were in the late 1950s. The footage used in this production was shot by UP cameramen over a 3 year period, with updated material added by Pentrex in 1993. It ’s an unforgettable visit!

DVD Special Feature: Chapter Menu provides instant access to program segments. Full-screen (4x3) Format, Can be played in any NTSC DVD player worldwide. Packaged in Sturdy Vinyl Clamshell Case.

5 Big Boy Combo Part 2 DVD
Pentrex 2005 1563421534 / 9781563421532 NEW CONDITION DVD

Weighing in at one and a quarter million pounds, measuring 132 feet long, Union Pacific Big Boys were the giants of the rails. Just 25 Big Boys were built and they only remained in service for 18 years before the end of the steam era. Yet their power and performance make them as popular today as in their own day. This Combo DVD brings you two viewing treats: a Pentrex documentary focusing on Big Boy operations over Sherman Hill and a 1950s television drama about a Big Boy engineer.

Last of the Giants Volume 3: Sherman Hill (70 Minutes)

Allan Krieg, writer and director of Last of the Giants, shares the challenges his camera crews faced while capturing the Big Boys on film. Scenes of the running gear in motion, shot from a camera car on a parallel track, and pacing sequences of the Big Boys on the road are thrilling to see. You ’ll ride in the cabs and watch the firemen and engineers at work. Interviews with surviving crewmembers give you a sense of what it was like to run these giant engines over Sherman Hill. All the scenes shown in this production are compiled from 16mm color film shot between 1955 and 1958.

Big Boys on TV (70 Minutes, Black & White)

Ed Begley stars in this 1950s NBC Lucky Strike Theater drama about a Big Boy engineer who is struggling with fears about his future. The live broadcast takes you right into the heart of this railroader ’s life at home and in the cab of his Big Boy. Pentrex incorporated some of the original footage shot on location showing Big Boys on Sherman Hill and in the Cheyenne yards. (It ’s all new material, not used in other Pentrex videos.) We also included the old commercials that aired with the broadcast. They will make you smile. This is a program the whole family can enjoy.

7 Cajon Pass-Tehachapi Loop DVD
Pentrex 1986 1563421461 / 9781563421464 NEW CONDITION DVD

Cajon Pass and Tehachapi Loop - these two Southern California railroading landmarks draw railfans from around the world seeking to experience the engineering ingenuity, spectacular scenery, and steady parade of trains that make these locations so appealing.

Never was that more true than in 1986 when this program was originally filmed. At that time most trains still had cabooses, Southern Pacific oil cans (the “Tank Train ”) still ran over Tehachapi, and many Santa Fe and Southern Pacific locomotives sported the short-lived red and yellow “Kodachrome ” merger paint scheme. You could still see pure sets of blue and yellow Santa Fe power, including EMD SD45s, F45s, and FP45s and GE U36Cs and C30-7s. Southern Pacific also ran pure sets of its locomotives, including SD45s and “tunnel motors, ” and Amtrak ran the Southwest Chief and the Desert Wind over Cajon with F40PH locomotives. The Santa Fe dispatcher ’s office was still located in the San Bernardino depot, and the Mojave depot was still in use.

These are the sights of the past but you can experience them and more in this incredible show. Ride a Union Pacific helper pushing a 12,000-ton coal train over Cajon. Visit the Santa Fe dispatcher ’s office in the San Bernardino depot and the hump yard and locomotive servicing facilities in Barstow. Thrill to cab rides on Cajon and Tehachapi. It ’s all here for you to savor again!

DVD Special Features: Bonus Footage: 19 minutes of updated coverage filmed in 2004. Two hi-fi soundtracks, one with the natural train sounds, the other with narration added. The viewer can switch the narration on or off at any time. Chapter Menu provides instant access to program segments. 8 Columbia River Gorge Vol. 2: Union Pacific DVD
Pentrex 2007 1563422174 / 9781563422171 NEW CONDITION DVD

Union Pacific's Portland Subdivision.

Climbing gently from the tidewater ports near Portland, Oregon is the Columbia River Gorge —a wide, flat-water river passage that provides access to the inland agricultural regions of Washington and Oregon and divides the two states along most of their border. It is a spot of unparalleled beauty that hosts two railroad lines: BNSF to the north and Union Pacific along the southern shore.

In Columbia River Gorge Volume I: BNSF ’s Fallbridge Subdivision, Pentrex explored the BNSF side of the Gorge, heading east from Vancouver, Washington to the arid desert mountains near the John Day Dam. Now, in Volume 2, we jump across the river to head back west toward Portland following Union Pacific ’s Portland Subdivision. We ’ll visit many of the region ’s best railfanning spots, such as Biggs, Celilo Park, The Dalles, Memaloose State Park, Mosier, and Hood River with the Mount Hood Scenic Railroad. We ’ll travel through the Viento State Park area to Wyeth, Cascade Locks, Bonneville Dam, and the spectacular Multnomah Falls. At Troutdale, the mainline splits into two routes to Portland and we ’ll visit the junction there before heading into the city.

The trains you ’ll see include Canpotex unit potash trains, Spokane International mixed freights, container, grain, trailer, and stack trains, and Amtrak ’s Pioneer. Motive power varies from SD40-2s to SD60Ms, SD70Ms, leased SD90MACs, Dash 40-CW, AC4400-CW, GE AC6000, Geeps, and more. CP, BNSF, and C&NW power also make appearances. These images were captured from the mid 1990s to the early 2000s, giving you a chance to see some of the older and newest power in use. With its incredible scenery and nonstop parade of interesting trains and motive power, it ’s no wonder UP ’s Portland Sub is one of the best railroading hotspots of the nation!

10 Northwest Doubleheader Steam DVD
Pentrex 2007 1563422190 / 9781563422195 NEW CONDITION DVD

Tacoma to Everett with SP 4449 and UP 844!

On May 18 and 19, 2007, the Union Pacific 844 and Southern Pacific 4449 steam locomotives made history by double heading for the first time ever between Tacoma and Everett, Washington. This historic event, which was jointly run by the Union Pacific Railroad and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, was a benefit excursion on behalf of the Barriger Library of the University of Missouri at St. Louis and the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation.

Pentrex was on hand to capture the excitement created by Friday ’s private excursion to and from Tacoma and Everett as well as Saturday ’s round-trip public excursion, the Puget Sound Steam Special. We also followed the engines on their doubleheader return trip from Tacoma to Portland. In addition, we chased the UP 844 on its way back home, capturing great footage of it through the Columbia River Gorge, flashing past beautiful Multnomah Falls, and steaming over the Blue Mountains of Eastern Oregon.

These powerful Northern-type locomotives switched point position at Everett on both days of the Tacoma-Everett runs. You ’ll have ample opportunity to see each of them looking great and leading the train of matched Armour yellow UP cars. Cool, overcast weather only served to make their billowing clouds of steam and smoke even more dramatic! The spectacular scenery along the Puget Sound created a perfect backdrop for great steam action. You ’ll see the locomotives thundering across Salmon Bay Bridge, rolling through Sunnyside Beach and Harbor View Parks, and racing along the flowing curves of the Sound.

The line between Tacoma and Everett is a busy double track mainline owned by BNSF with UP trackage rights. This allowed us to see interesting motive power, such as SD40-2s, heading a variety of freight trains there, as well as on the trip from Tacoma to Portland and through the Columbia River Gorge.

11 Powder River Combo DVD
Pentrex 2003 1563421259 / 9781563421259 NEW CONDITION DVD

In Wyoming's Powder River Basin, single track has been doubled and in some areas tripled to handle train after heavy train, and all for a single commodity - coal! Here's your opportunity to experience the complete story in these two programs.

King Coal at Black Thunder Mine takes you into the pits as massive machinery digs the coal, hauls it out, and flood-loads it into moving trains. Rolling meets between Union Pacific and BNSF trains are common, often headed by high horsepower locomotives as GE C44-9s and EMD SD90s.

Powder River Basin Coal Trains, filmed in 1992, demonstrates what it took to move huge amounts of coal out of the Basin. Chicago & North Western's GE C40-8s, and Burlington Northern trains, headed by a great mix of newer and older locomotives, struggle to haul their trains over White Tail Hill and the north end of the basin. You'll catch the action on board a set of helpers as they give a 14,000-ton train a shove up the mountain. It's heavy-duty railroading at its best!

13 Soldier Summit Assault DVD
Pentrex 2008 1563422425 / 9781563422423 NEW CONDITION DVD

At 7,440 feet, the crest of the Wasatch Plateau in Utah is the fifth highest railroad pass on a US transcontinental mainline. It was the highest point for the former Denver & Rio Grande in Utah. Assaulting the steep grades of Soldier Summit takes brute force horsepower. Many trains require both mid-train and rear end helpers. In 2000, when this show was recorded, the diesels of the Rio Grande, Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific worked together to muscle trains over the pass.

Union Pacific runs here now, but the Utah Railway and BNSF have traffic rights and Amtrak ’s California Zephyr runs two trains a day. Classic black and orange Rio Grande SD40T-2s are seen in daily use as helpers on UP ’s coal trains, and on the famous “trash train. ” During this time, the Utah Railway ’s fleet of SD40s was joined by six MK5000s and five Australian-built SD50s. UP ’s E-units and a C&NW Dash 8 also make an appearance.

Watch as extra power is cut into the trains at Helper for the push up the hill. The descent sees the line change direction 180 degrees at the Gilluly Loops, before continuing west to Provo. Coal is a major commodity here, and you ’ll visit UR coal loading facilities. The red rocks of Utah and snow-capped mountains, the famous formations of Castle Gate, the horseshoe curves at Gilluly, and the slide area at Thistle create a spectacular display. This detailed look at UP ’s Provo Subdivision offers everything to interest and entertain: rare motive power, challenging terrain, a variety of trains, and fantastic scenery!

Trains rattle across the diamonds at Rochelle, Illinois, where the double tracks of the Union Pacific Railroad and the double tracks of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks intersect.
