The story of how New England's 'little giant' managed to order a fleet of streamline passenger cars and locomotives in the midst of two national crises, the Great Depression and World War II. In conjunction with the Roosevelt Administration and Pullman-Standard, President/Trustee Howard Palmer corrected the administrative and economic damage created by J. P. Morgan's financial empire, in collusion with previous managements, by applying a keen sense of direction and revolutionary tactics. Author Doughty also tells the railroad under Palmer, in the middle of World War II, prepared for the postwar period with passenger car and traffic research, revealing for the first time unpublished drawings, designs, and artistic renderings depicting the plans and dreams for the future, and how, in the span of one year, all these dreams vanished.
