TLC Publishing 2008 0939487853 / 9780939487851 NEW CONDITION BOOK

5 Chesapeake & Ohio's Pere Marquettes Thomas W. Dixon, Jr.
TLC Publishing 2004 1883089883 / 9781883089887 NEW CONDITION BOOK

C&O's subsidiary Pere Marquette Railway was used by C&O's pro-passenger Chairman, Robert R. Young, as a test bed for his ideas on how to cure the passenger train problem in America. He ordered two diesel-powered 7 car lightweight trains that went into service in mid-1946 on the Detroit-Grand Rapids corridor. Over the next year they reversed the passenger losses on this line and actually built up traffic.

The trains were the first to emerge all-new from the clogged car builders shops after WWII. The new trains were of latest design and the on-board services were superb for a coach operation with hostesses, on-board passenger representatives, tickets delivered on the train, credit cards, no-tipping, etc. Many of these things were later tried on C&O's main line trains, and the equipment showed the way for the huge re-equipping of the name trains on the old C&O in 1950.

Eventually affected by the continued erosion of passenger traffic, the trains experienced a slow decline, but lasted as a shadow of themselves down to Amtrak on May 1, 1971. The story is told in great detail from original documents and illustrated with great photographs, many of them from C&O official files.

Contents:
Ch. 1: Rolling Through Michigan, Getting Ready, Motive Power, Waitresses, Public Relations, Newspaper Trip and Christening, pp. 1-13;
Ch. 2: Regular Trains, 1946-1948, pp. 14-17;

6 Chessie System Railroads In West Virginia Thomas W. Dixon, Jr.
C&O Historical Society 2008 0939487829 / 9780939487820 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Chessie System Railroads In West Virginia in Color: 1972-1985.

This is the second in a series of books the C&O Historical Society is doing on West Virginia. Each of these will have historical background and photographs of C&O or Chessie operations in a specific geographical area. The first of these, Chesapeake & Ohio In West Virginia, 1940-1960 in photographs was released in August 2005.

Chessie System Railroads In West Virginia will cover the Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio and Western Maryland in the Mountain State during the period when the bright yellow locomotives and cars made for one of the most photogenic railroad operations in the United States, especially when placed in scenic backgrounds such as the mountains of West Virginia.

Unlike the first book, which deals only with C&O lines, this one will have B&O and WM scenes as well, and it will be all color photographs. C&OHS selected the best color slides from many photographers who covered this period and believe that this book will be a superb addition to the literature of this colorful era.

12 The C&O Railway at Hawks Nest, West Virginia Thomas W. Dixon, Jr.
C&O Historical Society 2000 NA NEW CONDITION BOOK

This pamphlet is about the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway at Hawks Nest, West Virginia the deepest part of the New River Gorge. It was here in 1873 that the spike was driven which completed the two segments of the C&O between Richmond, Virginia and Huntington, West Virginia.

A branch line, one of the earliest to tap mines off the C&O main line, served coal mines at Ansted up a steep grade. In the early 20th Century a second line up the South side of the river branched from the original main line here. This pamphlet documents the tumultuous history of this locale, documents the structures of the railway and the town, and gives data on the coal output from the branch.
