7 Fairbanks Morse Locomotives In Color Jim Boyd
Morning Sun Books 1996 1878887637 / 9781878887634 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Fairbanks-Morse Locomotives In Color.

By the late 1930s Fairbanks-Morse & Company had developed a unique and efficient opposed-piston diesel engine which would be ideal for locomotives. The looming Second World War intervened, and F-Ms diesels were immediately applied to the U.S. Navy submarine fleet. It wasn't until August 1944 that F-M finally got its OP engine into a locomotive, a 1000-h.p. switcher for the Milwaukee Road. From that date until March 1963 F-M and its Canadian subsidiary turned out 1460 locomotives, ranging from switchers to 2400-h.p. passenger cab units and the decade-ahead-of-its-time six-motor Train Master.

This book describes every original purchaser of F-M locomotives and illustrates nearly every model of those owners, from short lines switchers and Train Masters in commuter service to freight cab units in the Canadian Rockies and chopped-nose Road-Switchers in Mexico - all in full color and context action. These units have all but vanished from the American railroad scene, but this book captures their glory years.

10 Kansas City Southern In Color Jim Boyd
Morning Sun Books 2003 1582481075 / 9781582481074 NEW CONDITION BOOK

The Era of Streamlined Hospitality 1940-1970.

Kansas City Southern was one of the first railroads to operate a real non-articulated diesel-powered streamliner when it introduced the Southern Belle in 1940. Over the next 30 years the image and spirit of Streamlined Hospitality defined the railroad. The KCS and L&A (Louisiana and Arkansas) were created, merged and operated by men with strong ideas and personalities. It was never a conformist, heading south when everyone else was scrambling westward and embracing the concept of long, slow freights when everyone else was focusing on high speed service. The KCS should have been a dead duck by the 1970s, but it made its way to the 21st century as a major independent player in the railroad merger game. Its most colorful era, however, were those 3 fascinating decades illustrated herein. Even though this is an In Color book, there are a number of b&w steam and diesel photographs in addition to color photographs. Also included are maps and timetable reproductions plus more text than commonly seen in Morning Sun titles.

14 Southern Pacific In Color Vol. 3: Classic Scarlet Jim Boyd
Morning Sun Books 2003 1582481016 / 9781582481012 NEW CONDITION BOOK

Classic Scarlet, 1958-1971.

In 1958 the Southern Pacific abandoned its Black Widow freight livery and colorful Daylight passenger livery in favor of a more economical paint scheme of Lark gray and scarlet for all power. Coinciding within a few months of the image change was the end of the first-generation of dieseldom, even though that particular phrase had not yet been coined. The first diesels to also be delivered in the new livery were also SPs first low-nose hood units. The book picks up the story of SPs diesel power where Southern Pacific in Color Volume 2 left off.

18 The Complete Book of North American Railroading Kevin EuDaly, Mike Schafer, Jim Boyd
Voyageur Press 2009 076032848X / 9780760328484 NEW CONDITION BOOK

The Complete Book of North American Railroading.

by Kevin EuDaly, Mike Schafer, Jim Boyd, Steve Jessup, Andrew McBride, and Steve Glischinski.

An expansive look at the history of railroading in North America and its impact on the development and culture of the United States and Canada.

For more than 150 years, railroads have transformed everyday life in North America: bringing goods to market, carrying travelers across the continent, seeing us through wars, enriching our folklore, and proving indispensable to tour economic, industrial, and social infrastructures. And that's not to mention the mind-bending technologies and machines that railroads have spawned.

Illustrated with more than 400 rare historical and modern photographs and period advertisements, The Complete Book of North American Railroading celebrates the people and machines that have made this growth possible. In these pages, a cast of railroading authorities teams up to tackle the industry's genesis; the development of steam, electric, and diesel-electric locomotives; the golden age of passenger travel; workhorse freight haulers; railroad infrastructure; and modern railroading operations.

It would be impossible to imagine the rapid growth of the United States and Canada with railroads. From the industry's first tentative steps in the early nineteenth century to the railways of our day, here is a fitting celebration of that legacy: an all-encompassing tome for hardcore railfans and casual enthusiasts alike.

This is more than a large-format coffee-table book since it includes much text and information in addition to the good selection of color and b&w photographs.
