TurboTrain: A Journey.

It has been over 40 years since the TurboTrain first rocketed to its record-breaking speeds and touched the hearts of a new generation of railfans. Part train, part jet aircraft, the TurboTrain was the latest in ground transport innovation. But the Turbo's promise of a new era of passenger travel sadly went unfulfilled. A gas turbine powered train introduced at a time of unprecedented hostility towards passenger train travel and unprecedented high fuel prices had little chance.

Despite its obstacles, the TurboTrain was a success with the traveling public and, by the time the last trains were retired in 1982, Turbo was running at over 98 percent efficiency. This made it one of the most reliable passenger trains in North America. Union Railroad: United States Steel's Pittsburgh Lifeline DVD

The Union Railroad, owned by United States Steel, funnels materials used to make steel to its parent's plants along the Monongahela River. While essentially an industrial switching and transfer operation, the tonnages are immense. In addition to bringing in bulk material and shipping out finished products, it moves products produced at one plant to another one.

The video starts out in North Bessemer where the Union connects with former US Steel sister road Bessemer & Lake Erie and down to the USS Edgar Thomson Works with scenes around the plant. Then it is across the Port Perry Bridge to the Duquesne Class Yard. From the yard, the trip continues south to Grant Street, Bull Run, Dravosburg Tunnel, the Irvin Works and on to the end of the line at the Clairton coke works. There are also side trips on the Munhall, Duquesne and Mifflin branches. Includes snowy winter scenes.

The video footage was shot between 1996 and 2001 by Scott Schaller and includes spectacular scenes of hot metal car action at the Edgar Thomson Works and historic photos.

TOD Engine Project DVD

The Tod Engine is a stationary steam engine that was used to power a rolling mill at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company Brier Hill Works in Youngstown, Ohio. The engine was built in 1913-14 in downtown Youngstown, Ohio by the William Tod Company and operated until 1979. The last Tod rolling mill engine was built in 1920, and of the several hundred that were once in use, only about a half dozen remain today. The Tod engine is the largest of its type still in existence.

The video follows the efforts of the Tod Engine Foundation members, after giving up on saving the Jeannette blast furnace, they move on to take apart the giant steam engine, remove it from the building owned by North Star Steel and preserve a part of Youngstown's industrial heritage in Youngstown. The video concludes with visits to other steam engines in two steel mills and a giant water pump.

Techniques for Making a Museum-quality model.

The second part of the series shows how to convert the Walthers Blast Furnace into specific prototypes, specifically the top works of USS Carrie #7 furnace in Pittsburgh and USS Ensley in Birmingham, Alabama.

Three-pass stoves are made from Walther's stoves and the Walthers Electrostatic Precipitator is highly detailed. Interlake Iron's Zenith Furnace merchant iron blast furnace is also created from scratch using a RIX oil storage tank, including three-pass Whitwell stoves and a Walthers stove. Again the presenter is Jeff Borne.

The DVD has an accompanying CD-ROM with construction instructions on building the models, parts lists for each project in Adobe Acrobat format and 414 still photos.

An intimate look inside the fence of a Chicago-area steel mill.

The tour starts at the coke works to witness a fiery push of incandescent coke out of an oven and the spectacular steam clouds as the hot coke is cooled down. The next stop is at the blast furnace to watch 3,000' molten iron tapped from the furnace on the casthouse floor, with its incredible heat and flying sparks. Hot metal cars are moved into position to be filled underneath the casthouse floor. On the Highline trestle in front of the furnaces, raw materials are brought in and the scale car underneath brings them to the skip hoists. The molten slag flows out of the furnace into a pit for cooling. Other sights in the works include a pig iron caster, the two blast furnaces (one with a brick casthouse), an old hot metal car, SW-1001 locomotives and myriad other details inside the plant.

The second part of the video visits 48 steel mills & foundries in Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Alabama, Utah, Colorado, Ontario and Nova Scotia. Few places in America offered as much railroad action and variety as Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley in the 1940s. This book is organized by railroad and location, beginning with the Lehigh Valley around Towanda, PA and following this around Sayre, PA. It then looks at the Erie, Lackawanna and Erie Lackawanna in Waverly, NY, following them west to the Elmira, NY area. At Elmira it heads south on the picturesque Elmira Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad. This entire remarkable primarily taken in the 1940s was conducted within a one hour drive of photographer Lloyd Halls home in Towanda, PA. Grand Trunk Western In Color: Steam & Green 1941-1951.

The Grand Trunk Western was an interesting blend of Canadian and U.S. railway practices. It had hotshot freights that serviced a burgeoning automobile manufacturing traffic in the Detroit area while also operating a top-notch Chicago to Toronto main line passenger operation during the time period presented in this book.

Featuring the color photography of Emery Gulash and Sanford Goodrick, the pictures with accompanying captions are organized by GTW operating divisions and subdivisions. Chesapeake & Ohio Diesel Locomotives in Color: 1949-1971.

The story of Chesapeake & Ohio's conversion to diesel locomotives is one of a reluctant embrace of technology driven by economics. Were it not for the introduction of new management during WWII, the story could have turned out quite similar to that of the N&W, who embraced steam locomotives long after most railroads had dieselized in the late 1950s.

The success of dieselization on the Pere Marquette, merged into C&O in 1947, has been cited as a major influence. But the coal strike of 1949 was the catalyst that brought the diesel locomotive to the C&O proper.

By waiting until later to purchase diesel locomotives, the C&O avoided many of the miss-steps that other roads made in their purchase of early diesels. The C&O purchased locomotives in a consistent manner, with a great deal of standardization. In the end, some of the diesels purchased to replace steam would last long enough to be included in the CSX roster, outliving the C&O itself.

Most of the photographs are color with some black & white photos from the Steam Era. The author once worked for the IC in the early 1970's and his pictures are mostly from that era. He also traveled and pictures from across the IC are presented along the way such as St. Louis Union Station, the swing bridge at Lake Ponchartrain, leased power and demonstrator units plus Chicago passenger trains. As usual, a nice job by one of the best railfan authors.
